If you go camping in Franconia, you can look forward to a diverse region: crystal-clear lakes, idyllic rivers, spas with mineral thermal baths and imposing climbing rocks characterise the landscape in northern Bavaria. The hilly and wooded areas, such as the Franconian Heights or the Fichtel Mountains, are perfect for hiking and cycling tours in summer. Many campsites in Franconia lend their guests bicycles and advise holidaymakers on the best routes into nature. The campsites at Altmühlsee, Brombachsee, Sonnensee and Fichtelsee in the Franconian Lake District are very popular. You could also choose the Mohrenhof Franken, Camping Bocksbeutelstraße in Ippesheim/Bullenheim or Camping Heidehof.

Special features of camping in Franconia

Franconia is generally divided into three regions centred around Ansbach, Bayreuth and Würzburg. In addition, there are other important towns such as Nuremberg, itself one of the cultural centres of the region. In these cities, you can admire the magnificent architecture from the Middle Ages and baroque castles, and on the banks of the Regnitz, Tauber, Saale and Main rivers you will find a large number of high-quality campsites with excellent sanitary facilities, catering and leisure facilities. If you feel like it, you can go on guided tours on foot or by bike through the floodplains, explore the Franconian forests on horseback or go on an excursion in a rowing boat.

Destinations in Franconia

In the heart of Upper Franconia, Bamberg is one of the most popular travel and excursion destinations. The UNESCO-protected buildings in the old town are particularly impressive. An absolute must for holidaymakers in Franconia is a visit to Bamberg Cathedral, where the emperors of the Holy Roman Empire were buried. The foundation stone was laid by Henry II at the beginning of the 11th century.

Bamberg is also known for its internationally renowned beer tradition, which can be savoured in beer gardens and breweries, as well as in the villages and communities surrounding the town. The campsites in the Regnitz Valley and along the Main-Danube Canal as well as on the slopes of the Steigerwald, Franconian Switzerland and in the Haßberge Nature Park are particularly suitable for camping nearby.

With a caravan further south of Bamberg, Nuremberg is the perfect place to get to know Franconian culture. The old imperial castle with its reddish brickwork, the Gothic St Sebald's Church, half-timbered houses and the former home of Albrecht Dürer are absolute highlights. On the outskirts of the city, Franconian Switzerland is ideal for climbing, hiking and excursions to one of the medieval hilltop castles.

Crossed by the River Main and surrounded by picturesque vineyards, Würzburg is also well worth a holiday in Franconia. From the magnificent Baroque residence city, you can go on tours up to the Marienberg fortress and the Nikolausberg.

Top sights

Some of the most famous sights in Franconia are located in Nuremberg's Old Town. Here, for example, it is worth taking a look at the home and studio of the famous Renaissance painter Albrecht Dürer. The museum provides detailed information about his life and work. In the immediate neighbourhood, you can stroll through the narrow cobbled streets and walk up to the old imperial castle, from where visitors can look out over the many church towers and tiled roofs of Nuremberg.

In Würzburg, Marienberg Castle is one of the city's most famous landmarks. The fortress towers around 100 metres above the River Main and can be seen from afar with its massive towers. On a tour, you can admire the Merovingian insignia, the Renaissance gardens and the museum with its detailed exhibition. The origins of the complex date back to around the same time as Bamberg Cathedral, which houses the tomb of the canonised imperial couple Henry II and Cunegonde. Johannisburg Castle in Aschaffenburg dates back to the 17th century and is one of the most important red sandstone Renaissance buildings in Bavaria.

The four towns of Aschaffenburg, Bamberg, Würzburg and Nuremberg are also characterised by the filigree residential architecture along the German Half-Timbered Road. The architectural style becomes particularly evident the further west you follow the Main or Fulda rivers, for example to Steinau an der Straße or Wertheim.

Activities and excursions

Wellness

The north of Franconia in particular is known for its spas. Numerous mineral springs bubble up from the ground on the upper Main and are utilised by the local wellness facilities for their offers. Some of the best-known spas in Franconia are those in health resorts such as Bad Windsheim, Bad Staffelstein, Bad Kissingen and Bad Königshofen. Here, visitors can relax in the pleasantly warm thermal water, warm up in the sauna and treat themselves to a soothing massage.

Hiking and guided tours

Such a relaxing holiday can be combined with sport and physical activity in the fresh air. Hiking in Franconia, for example, gets the circulation going and offers many attractions along the way. The numerous castles and ramparts in the Hassberge Nature Park are among the most popular excursion destinations in Franconia. The Basalt Trail takes holidaymakers up to the Kreuzberg, where the Rhön has its source. The Franconian Albrunde offers visitors a view of the fertile Albach Valley. Cultural history awaits travellers on the beer hike through Franconia. Franconian Switzerland in particular, with over 70 breweries, is one of the most important areas for producing the flavoursome barley juice. The tours lead from one brewery to another and offer an exciting insight into customs and traditions. Guided tours tell you all about the production of Franconian beers. The Fichtelgebirge takes hikers into the fascinating mountain world on marvellous routes.

Gastronomy

When camping in Franconia, the hearty cuisine of the region is a must. In the rustic brewery pubs and restaurants of the region, the spicy Nuremberg Rostbratwürste are always part of a hearty evening. This speciality is best enjoyed home-made by one of the local butchers. It is served with mustard and other tasty sauces.

Locals like to order a real Franconian Schäufele if they are more hungry. The dish consists of a shovel-shaped cut of shoulder with pork rind, dark beer sauce, sauerkraut and potato dumplings. It is served with a real Franconian Bräu, one of the many types of beer for which the region is famous. With the brewery founded in Mitwitz in 1520, the brand is one of the most traditional in Bavaria.

While hearty meat dishes encourage you to drink beer, baked carp in Franconia tempts you to savour regional white wines. Freshly caught from the region's lakes, the fish are cut in half, dipped in beer and flour and then fried in clarified butter until crispy. The result is a crispy beer batter that coats the fish and is particularly popular during Lent and on Good Friday. In the Aischgrund, a region between Forchheim and Bad Windsheim known for its ponds, the time between September and November is ideal for sampling the carp variations.

Best time to visit

The weather in Franconia is particularly suitable for outdoor activities between the end of April and the beginning of October. If you want to go swimming, you should travel between June and August, when temperatures average around 20°C but can reach much higher levels in the sun. In spring and autumn, the weather forecast for Franconia is especially good for hikers: mild temperatures and little rain characterise this time of year. Winter days can be spent cross-country skiing in the forests or downhill skiing at high altitudes.
