Clear water, gentle mountains, deep forests: Camping at Lake Edersee is a true paradise for nature lovers and active holidaymakers. There is a unique natural landscape around Germany's second largest reservoir, just waiting to be explored on foot or by bike. Families with children spend carefree days by the water in summer. The charming little communities on the lake and health resorts such as Bad Wildungen are a popular destination for day trips and offer numerous wellness programmes for those seeking relaxation.

Lake Edersee is located in the Kellerwald-Edersee Nature Park near the town of Waldeck in northern Hesse and, with the 48 metre high dam wall of the Edertalsperre, is the second largest reservoir in Germany. There are numerous campsites around the approximately 27 kilometres of water and in the tranquil Eder Valley at Affoldener See, many of which have their own beach right on the shore of the lake. This makes the Edersee holiday region perfect for a summer camping holiday by the water, and away from the beach there is a wide range of leisure activities for water sports enthusiasts and active holidaymakers around the lake. Kayaks and canoes can be hired in communities such as Vöhl and Fürstental Bettenhagen to explore the natural shores of the lake. The UNESCO World Heritage Site Kellerwald-Edersee Nature Park is a true paradise for hikers and cyclists thanks to its ancient beech forests. Lake Edersee is also popular with dog owners, as in addition to an official dog beach on the Scheid peninsula, there are countless places where four-legged friends can swim undisturbed.

Popular campsites on Lake Edersee

In addition to pitches for caravans and motorhomes, the campsites on Lake Edersee often also offer tent pitches, group tent pitches, mobile homes or rental accommodation. There are also some motorhome pitches in the region with electricity connections and waste disposal stations.

Teichmann camping and holiday park

The beautiful Teichmann camping and holiday park is located right at the start of Lake Eder and in the immediate vicinity of the National Park Centre. The site on the Eder has its own small bathing lake and is therefore very popular with families with children. The modern sanitary facilities offer family bathrooms, and gas bottles and other everyday necessities are available in the camping shop. Dogs are very welcome.

Rehbach campsite

The family-run Rehbach campsite is one of the most beautifully situated holiday resorts on Lake Edersee. There are wonderful views of the lake and the green low mountain range landscape directly from the campsite. There is also a private bathing beach. Popular attractions such as the climbing forest, the wildlife park and the treetop walk are just a few minutes' walk away. For water sports enthusiasts, there is a sailing school right next door.

Asel-Süd campsite

The "Edersee paradise" Asel Süd is in a great location, a little off the beaten track on a peninsula by the Asel bridge, which is usually only visible in high summer: the "Edersee Atlantis" only emerges from the water when the water level is low. The idyllic campsite is particularly popular with nature lovers and hikers. Children love the organic farm with donkeys, goats and pony rides.

Camping Kellerwald

On the outskirts of Jesberg, south of Lake Edersee, the Kellerwald campsite is the ideal place for holidaymakers who want to explore the region on foot or by bike. Numerous paths lead directly from the site into the Kellerwald-Edersee National Park. There is an outdoor pool and a football pitch close to the campsite. If you want to get up high, hike to the Kellerwald tower and enjoy a wonderful view over the densely wooded landscape.

Favourite places in the region

There are a number of pretty towns around Lake Edersee that are ideal for short or longer excursions and as a base for exploring the holiday region. The spa town of Bad Wildungen is known for its numerous healing springs and is considered the feel-good town of the region. Waldeck on the Edertalsperre is also a spa town and is known beyond the region for its beautiful Waldeck Castle. One of the most beautiful medieval old towns awaits visitors in the cathedral and imperial town of Fritzlar.

Bad Wildungen

Bad Wildungen lies in a fairytale natural landscape and is one of the most beautiful places in the region. With 18 healing springs, the spa centre is a popular holiday destination for wellness fans, who can be pampered here by every trick in the book. Afterwards, take a walk through the beautiful English-style spa gardens, which are considered the largest spa complex in Europe. The traffic-calmed old town with its half-timbered houses and the scenic Friedrichstein Castle are also worth a visit.

Waldeck

The spa town of Waldeck is the centre of the region and is located near the Eder Dam, one of the most famous excursion destinations around Lake Edersee. The town's landmark is the magnificent Schloss Hotel Waldeck, which offers a marvellous view of Lake Edersee and the Kellerwald-Edersee National Park. If you don't want to walk to the top, simply take the Waldeck mountain railway and ride up in the gondola. The Waldeck beach promenade and lido are the perfect place to relax. Hikers can set off from the town centre on the popular primeval forest trail around the Edersee.

Fritzlar

The magnificent towers of St. Peter's Cathedral can be seen from afar and characterise the silhouette of the medieval town of Fritzlar. Surrounded by the almost completely preserved town wall, the old town with its beautiful half-timbered houses and historic market square is one of the most beautiful old towns in Hesse and is a great destination for an extended stroll through the town. Just a few minutes from the town centre, the fascinating natural landscape of the Eder floodplains offers the perfect contrast and a true paradise for hikers and cyclists.

Sights and excursion tips

  • WildtierPark Edersee: The perfect excursion destination for the whole family: bison, wildcats and red deer can be marvelled at in the scenic wildlife park. There is also a petting zoo and air shows.
  • Waldeck Castle: The former medieval hilltop castle is now a sophisticated castle hotel that can also be visited. Tip: The hill offers one of the best views of Lake Edersee.
  • Treetop walk TreeTopWalk: Another exciting excursion destination for families is the treetop walk, which leads through the treetops on the shores of Lake Edersee at lofty heights. In addition to the fantastic views, the trail also offers a beautiful nature trail.

Tour tip

If you still haven't had enough of the water after your camping holiday at Lake Edersee and are travelling by motorhome, then head to the neighbouring Sauerland region. A beautiful 5-lake route takes you past the largest bodies of water in the region and, in addition to bathing fun and plenty of water, offers exciting insights into one of the most beautiful cultural landscapes in central Germany. The route starts in tranquil Arnsberg, which offers a first highlight with the dam wall on Lake Möhne. The route then leads via the idyllic Diemelsee lake and the impressive Hennetalsperre dam into the green paradise of the Biggesee-Listersee nature adventure area. A tour that is hard to beat, especially in summer!
