Many of the villages in Baden-Württemberg are characterised by their high-quality winegrowing and tempt you to take a walk through the vine-covered slopes. Outdoor enthusiasts are in the right place for climbing and hiking in the Black Forest. Dense tree cover, bare mountain peaks and quaint villages are what make this region so attractive. Gentle hills and not too steep mountains await you in the Swabian Alb and in the foothills of the Alps in the south. In the Allgäu, you can watch the traditional cattle drives in autumn.
Your four-legged companion doesn't have to stay at home on a camping holiday in Baden-Württemberg. Most holiday resorts allow dogs and other pets. Several motorways lead to Baden-Württemberg. It therefore depends on which holiday destination you have in mind to decide on the right route. For travelling to the western Black Forest and the Rhine, for example, we recommend the A5 motorway, which leads past Karlsruhe, Kehl and Freiburg im Breisgau to the Swiss border.
The motorway leads from the north from Frankfurt am Main and Bad Hersfeld, where it meets the A7 north-south axis. You can use the latter to travel from northern Germany, Hamburg and Hanover, for example, to reach the Allgäu region of Baden-Württemberg. There are also several junctions to the west, for example the A6 to Heidelberg and the A8 to Stuttgart. The A96 and A81 motorways lead to Lake Constance.
The distance from northern Germany, for example from Hamburg, is between 700 and 900 kilometres. Berlin is around 630 km and Cologne 400 km from Baden-Württemberg. For Munich residents, the neighbouring federal state is of course a particularly convenient excursion with a maximum distance of 300 to 400 km.
Baden-Württemberg is generally known for its hearty Swabian cuisine. Around Stuttgart, people like to eat egg noodles, which are refined with cheese or served as a side dish with roast meat or stew. Maultaschen with various fillings also originate from the region. These taste particularly good in light broths or soups.
A favourite is the hearty roast beef, which goes well with Schupfnudeln, among other things. There are differences in the Baden region in the western part of the federal state. Here, people like to eat saddle of venison from the Black Forest and Schäufele, a piece of cured pork shoulder with potatoes and lamb's lettuce. Alsatian specialities include tarte flambée and snail soup.
Idyllic old towns such as Freiburg im Breisgau, Heidelberg and Tübingen await you on your camping holiday in Baden-Württemberg. Leisure fans and active holidaymakers head to the campsites on the Rhine, Lake Constance, in the Black Forest and on the Swabian Alb. Other popular holiday regions for nature lovers are Kraichgau, Kinzigtal and Münstertal.
Dense forests and enchanting mountains await you in the Black Forest. Hikers in particular get their money's worth here and can climb peaks such as the Feldberg or Schauinsland. The many climatic health resorts at dizzying heights are remarkable. Titisee and Mummelsee are great for relaxing hours. Freiburg im Breisgau fascinates with its cathedral and historic architecture. The Erbenwald campsite is a recommended starting point for excursions into the Black Forest.
The Kinzig Valley in the central Black Forest is one of the most popular holiday regions in Baden-Württemberg. With its dreamy little villages, pretty Black Forest farms and flowering meadows, you will spend many eventful hours here. One of the best ways to explore the Kinzig valley is on the many cycle paths and hiking trails.
The magical landscape of the Münster Valley between the Black Forest, Breisgau and Markgräflerland offers nature experiences at their very best. The "valley of a hundred valleys" is characterised by meadows and picturesque pastures that stretch between the mountain slopes. From the highest mountain, Belchen, you have a breathtaking view of the Alps. The municipality of Münstertal is also a climatic health resort and therefore a great place for a summer holiday, especially for those seeking peace and quiet.
The Swabian Alb stretches for almost 200 kilometres across Baden-Württemberg. The limestone massif has created a pleasantly hilly low mountain range with elevations of up to 1,015 metres. The lush green mountain pastures where cows and goats graze are particularly impressive. The many caves in the region are also well worth a visit.
Lake Constance is the largest inland body of water in Germany and is located directly in the border triangle with Switzerland and Austria. Holidaymakers will find numerous campsites and picturesque towns such as Friedrichshafen and Constance on the north coast. Here, campers of the 50+ generation like to take advantage of passenger shipping, while sports-loving families enjoy sailing and surfing. One of the most popular excursion destinations not to be missed is the flower island of Mainau.
Most travellers opt for summer to go camping in Baden-Württemberg. From June to August, the temperatures are perfect for a stay with temperatures of around 25 °C. In May and September, you can still expect a maximum of 19 °C. Lake Constance is around 20 °C in July and August and is perfect for a refreshing dip.
It is somewhat cooler in the mountains. In the Black Forest, on the Swabian Alb and in the Allgäu, you should bring appropriate weather and windproof clothing. Hikers, mountain bikers and cyclists can also travel to Baden-Württemberg for an active holiday in March and April or in October, when the average temperatures are below 15 °C.
