Camping Am Königsberg

The south of Germany offers beautiful destinations for a relaxing camping holiday. Visitors can expect breathtaking landscapes and cultural highlights in very different regions such as Baden, Franconia, the Allgäu, the Lake Constance region, the Black Forest or the Upper Bavarian lakes. Depending on the holiday destination, the landscape is dominated by gentle plains, dense forests, crystal-clear lakes or imposing mountains. Whether active holidaymakers, families, bathing holidaymakers or those interested in culture - the south of Germany offers a suitable campsite for every target group.

Special features of camping in southern Germany

The diverse options for camping in southern Germany range from beach camping on one of the many mountain, natural or reservoir lakes to quiet camping in the midst of orchards on Lake Constance and mountain or winter camping for hikers or skiers in the Alps.

Farm camping, which is becoming increasingly popular, is an interesting alternative for families with children. The size of the campsites in southern Germany also varies greatly. In addition to small, family-run sites, there are also large, well-equipped campsites.

Many campsites are located in or near large cities such as Munich, Nuremberg, Würzburg or Freiburg. However, there are also many campsites in smaller towns in very scenic locations with interesting cultural or sporting opportunities - for example in Wangen in the Allgäu, in Oberteuringen in the Lake Constance region or at Walchensee in Upper Bavaria.

Getting there

A major advantage of camping in southern Germany is the easy and usually relatively quick journey from all regions of Germany thanks to the excellent motorway connections. From the north, the A7 motorway leads directly into the heart of Bavaria and ends just before the Austrian border at Füssen.

From Hamburg, it takes around 800 kilometres to cover this distance. The cathedral city of Fulda is well worth a stopover halfway along the route. As well as a pretty old town and peaceful gardens, it also has an indoor park where children can let off steam before continuing their journey.

From the east, such as the greater Berlin area, you can reach Munich in just 600 km via the A9 motorway. From the Dresden area, you can take the A4 motorway and change to the A9 southbound at Gera.

Destinations in southern Germany

Southern Germany offers many interesting destinations for a successful camping holiday. In addition to major cities such as Munich and Nuremberg, there are also many smaller towns such as Lindau on Lake Constance, Bad Wörishofen and Heidelberg. Kempten in the Allgäu and Prien am Chiemsee are also particularly recommended places to visit.

Kempten in the heart of the Allgäu

Kempten is one of the oldest towns in Germany. The unofficial capital of the Allgäu has an architecturally interesting cityscape based on a dual urban structure consisting of the older, winding imperial city and the newer, baroque "collegiate city". Here in the cultural centre of the surrounding area, you will find an exciting mixture of centuries-old Allgäu traditions and an almost Mediterranean atmosphere. In addition to cultural sightseeing, there are numerous other leisure activities in the immediate vicinity, such as swimming in one of the many mountain lakes or reservoirs, hiking or canyoning.

Kneipp spa town of Prien am Chiemsee

The small town of Prien is located in the Upper Bavarian district of Rosenheim directly on the shores of Lake Chiemsee. The climatic and Kneipp spa town impresses with its historic architecture, which can be seen in particular in the old craftsmen's quarter, and an interesting art gallery. Lake Chiemsee invites you to swim, take a paddle steamer tour or visit one of the lake islands. The public Kneipp facilities throughout the village provide pleasant relaxation. Children in particular love the local climbing garden and the Prienavera adventure pool.

Activities and excursions

The whole of southern Germany offers a wealth of activities and excursions during your camping holiday.

Hiking in southern Germany

This region is particularly ideal for active camping holidaymakers. Thanks to the vast, undeveloped natural areas, hiking is particularly suitable for all ages and levels of difficulty. Hiking in the Allgäu is particularly easy on the joints thanks to its gently rolling landscape.

In other areas of southern Germany, hikers have to overcome slight inclines, which are also easy to manage with children, for example on a hike through the adventurous Eistobel. The Alps offer mountain hikers a varied and sometimes challenging hiking area.

Lake Constance as a versatile excursion destination

Lake Constance is a popular excursion destination in southern Germany. This large lake is located in the foothills of the Alps on the border with Austria and Switzerland. The temperatures here are comparatively mild all year round, inviting visitors to take romantic walks around the lake. Numerous restaurants and cafés right on the lakeshore invite you to linger.

There are magnificent baroque buildings to visit in the surrounding area, such as the Birnau church or the castle on the island of Mainau. A boat trip on the historic paddle steamer is a cosy way to discover Lake Constance from the water.

Gastronomy

The cuisine of southern Germany is just as varied as the landscape, as each region has its own specialities. In Swabia, these tend to be down-to-earth dishes such as Maultaschen or Käsespätzle. The Lake Constance region, on the other hand, is very much characterised by fruit growing, which is partly reflected in the cuisine. But freshly caught fish such as Lake Constance whitefish can also be found on many menus there.

Baden cuisine, on the other hand, is influenced by French cuisine and offers specialities such as snail soup, Badisches Schäufele or tarte flambée. A classic of Franconian cuisine, on the other hand, is bratwurst in many variations. Franconian wines and gingerbread are also known throughout the region. Bavarian cuisine is also a very down-to-earth cuisine, which has its origins in many rural dishes and is characterised by numerous meat dishes and rich pastries.

Best time to travel

The weather in southern Germany is highly dependent on the region you are visiting. Overall, the climate here is Central European and temperate, with relatively warm summers and cool winters. Both spring and autumn can be rainy and windy.

The best time to go camping in southern Germany is therefore summer, followed by late spring and early autumn. One special climatic feature is Lake Constance, which has its very own microclimate characterised by almost Mediterranean weather with particularly mild winters.

Winter camping is becoming increasingly popular in the mountains of southern Germany in particular due to the frequent snowfall. Skiers and snowboarders in particular enjoy this unique experience of camping in a well-insulated motorhome or caravan in the middle of winter in the snow-covered mountains or on one of the frozen lakes.
