When you hear Bavaria, you probably immediately think of the Alps, cows and the Oktoberfest. But did you know that Germany's largest federal state also has a sea, even if only in name? We're talking about Lake Chiemsee, of course. We introduce you to the most beautiful campsites we have found on the "Bavarian Sea".
Lake Chiemsee is not called the "Bavarian Sea" for nothing: Germany's second largest inland lake is considered one of the most beautiful lakes in the foothills of the Bavarian Alps, which is certainly partly due to the wonderful and spectacular sunsets.
It's not just campers who like it here - even the "Fairytale King" Ludwig II loved the view from his castle on the island of Herrenchiemsee. And it's no wonder: the Chiemgau region offers such a wide variety of landscapes in such a small area as no other district or region.
Incidentally, the names of the three islands in the lake are no coincidence: Herreninsel, also known as Herrenchiemsee, was the site of the former monastery of the Augustinian canons. On Frauenchiemsee, on the other hand, the Frauenwörth convent of Benedictine nuns was built and still exists today. And because the third island was mainly used as a herb and vegetable garden, it was given the name Krautinsel (herb island).
Let us whisk you away to this charming idyll and take a look at our 5 most beautiful campsites on Lake Chiemsee. The following campsites have won us over for a relaxing and varied holiday.
Lake Chiemsee is not one of the most popular holiday destinations in Germany for nothing. The beautiful natural landscape of the Alpine foothills and the wide range of leisure activities attract countless holidaymakers with motorhomes to the holiday paradise around Bavaria's largest lake every year.
Our starting point: the Hofbauer campsite on the south-west shore. It is a short walk to Prien. Here, the local history museum provides visitors with interesting insights into the history of the town. The craftsmen's quarter "Am Gries" with its listed houses is also worth a visit. Let yourself be taken on a journey through the natural kingdom of elves, fairies and dwarves. Or lead an alpaca on a hike through the charming landscape - cuddling session included. If you want to experience something special, take the boat to Herrenchiemsee in the evening and take part in a bat tour. Watch the little flying artists as they hunt and learn more about their bat highways and homes.
Jump straight into Lake Chiemsee in the morning and start the day refreshed: Chiemsee-Camping Rödlgries in Übersee makes it possible! Situated directly on the shores of Lake Chiemsee, the campsite is ideally located for anyone who wants to be as close to the water as possible. But there is much more to experience: Numerous hiking trails lead you past legendary castles and palaces, for example that of King Ludwig II. Climb the mountains with the mountain railways or try your hand at golf or tennis. Get the perfect view and overview with a glider flight, paragliding or hang gliding.
Chiemsee Camping Lambach on the north shore in Seebruck is ideal for adventurous campers. Cyclists can cycle around Lake Chiemsee, while hikers can explore the three monasteries of Baumburg, Seeon and Frauenchiemsee on the monastery trail. The Kampenwand cable car takes you effortlessly to the mountain peaks of the Kampenwand and rewards you with a fantastic panoramic view. If you don't just want to enjoy the view, but also want an adrenaline rush, then hang-gliding is a must. Action is also on the programme with canyoning. A visit to the cave castle in Stein an der Traun or the Badaium Roman Museum is a more leisurely experience. Incidentally, this is also a great destination in bad weather!
We continue to the eastern shore of the lake, to Chieming. Chiemsee Strandcamping is already waiting for us there. The local "private home brewers" offer guided tours and beer workshops in their breweries - why not brew your own holiday beer as a personal souvenir! Take a balloon flight for a unique panoramic view. Had enough of the lake? Salzburg has something for everyone: Admire the historic city centre on a shopping tour, visit the Hohensalzburg Fortress or feel the music in the Mozart Museum. Exciting things await you at the Haus der Natur: From the mysteries of space to the underwater worlds of the oceans, from dinosaurs to the human body.
Finally, we pay a visit to the Kupferschmiede campsite near Arlaching on the north bank. The wooded surroundings are ideal for walks in the shade of the trees. For more extensive explorations, cycle tours on land or a boat trip on the water are ideal. If you'd rather experience a longer journey - Hellabrunn Zoo makes it possible! Visit the continents and observe the animals living there. Find out how salt ends up on our tables at the Berchtesgaden salt mine. Rain thwarting your plans? The museum in Amerang Castle offers insights into the time of the knights, followed by homemade cakes and drinks in the castle café.
