The Berchtesgadener Land or the Zugspitze are a sporting challenge for active travellers, hikers and winter lovers. Those interested in culture can also experience the fairytale world of King Ludwig when they discover the many palaces and castles set against the Alpine panorama.

Alternatively, there are campsites at Alpsee, Chiemsee, Staffelsee, Tegernsee and Hopfensee for campers who appreciate and love the water. Beach camping near Waging am See is also popular.
The 5-star Camping Resort Allweglehen, on the other hand, exudes a touch of luxury, while the Isarhorn nature campsite near Mittenwald aims to preserve unspoilt nature.
Camping is very important in the state of Bavaria. The Upper Bavaria region is no exception. Many beautiful sites with motorhome pitches, tent pitches and rental accommodation are popular destinations for a relaxing camping holiday.
The Alpen-Caravanpark Tennsee is one of the most beautiful places in the Alpine region. The panoramic view of the mountains is unique and the caravan pitches are in an exceptionally beautiful location. The wide range of leisure activities and bathing opportunities make the Tennsee caravan park an attractive holiday destination.
The pitches on the shores of Lake Riegsee are particularly popular at Camping Brugger. The wonderful view and the short distances to the jetty or the beach can be decisive arguments in favour of a booking. Lake Riegsee also has plenty to offer in terms of water sports and walks along the shore.
On the edge of the Berchtesgaden National Park, the Allweglehen camping resort is a small camper's paradise. The fascinating view of the Watzmann massif, the comprehensive service and the wellness options attract numerous guests to the Allweglehen camping resort every year.
The lakes in Upper Bavaria are probably the preferred destination for many holidaymakers. The beautiful campsites at Alpsee, Chiemsee, Staffelsee, Tegernsee, Ammersee and Hopfensee enjoy great popularity. Beach camping near Waging am See is particularly popular. The Isarhorn nature campsite near Mittenwald and the Pangerl campsite on Lake Walchensee are also worthwhile destinations.
Many holidaymakers reach their destination in Upper Bavaria via the state capital of Munich. Numerous motorways converge there and make it possible to continue your journey. Travellers coming from the north have the longest journey ahead of them at around 612 km. Many guests usually take the A9 from Berlin via Nuremberg and thus pass through the north of Upper Bavaria. The A93 is used by holidaymakers from Upper Franconia, who continue their journey via Regensburg and the Upper Palatinate on the A9 towards Munich.
In addition to the three independent cities of Munich, Ingolstadt and Rosenheim, a further 21 districts inspire holidaymakers in Upper Bavaria: magnificent monasteries, Roman excavations or UNESCO World Heritage Sites from Berchtesgaden to Garmisch-Patenkirchen in front of the pristine landscape of rivers, mountains, meadows and forests fascinate culture and nature lovers alike.
The popular holiday resort is located in front of the magical panorama of the Berchtesgaden Alps near the national park of the same name. While hikers and mountaineers as well as nature lovers appreciate the region as a camping paradise, culture lovers are also enamoured. In addition to the three striking churches in Gothic or Baroque style, the royal villa to the west of the market centre is the town's landmark. The picturesque building above the Luitpold Park was built under King Maximilian II. Among others, the Bavarian fairytale king Ludwig II was a welcome guest at the villa-style summer residence modelled on the Florentine villa.
When you say winter sports in Germany, you mean Garmisch-Patenkirchen. Thanks to its exposed location at the foot of the Zugspitze in Werdenfelser Land, it is Germany's best-known winter sports resort. Among other things, it is home to the famous Olympic ski jump, which attracts many holidaymakers as spectators. Every year, it is the venue for the Four Hills Tournament as part of the international Ski Jumping World Cup. The town's second major attraction are the traditional façade and house decorations known as Lüftlmalerei. In addition to oil paintings, you can also see statues of saints and magnificent decorative fretwork on the roof trusses of many historic mountain houses.
The mountains of Upper Bavaria beckon in both summer and winter. In addition to the sporting attractions, the monasteries and castles amidst picturesque lakes and meadows are also fascinating.
If you want to relax while skiing, head for the slopes of the Berchtesgaden Alps. Six areas for alpinists provide variety. With around 60 kilometres of pistes, the Chiemgau Alps offer family-friendly skiing on the slopes. The famous Winklmoosalm is located in Reit im Winkel. In the Mangfallgebirge mountains, several ski areas provide variety: south of Schliersee lies the Spitzingsee Alpine region and the Sudelfeld ski area between Bayrischzell and Oberaudorf is considered the largest interconnected ski area in the country.
On the island of Herrenchiemsee, King Ludwig II fulfilled his eponymous dream of a fairytale castle. However, His Highness was only able to spend a few days in the magnificent building, which was built around 1878 according to the plans of the Palace of Versailles. When he died suddenly, construction was halted in 1886. The place where Ludwig is said to have committed suicide is now one of the most beautiful excursion destinations near Munich. Lake Starnberg is an idyllic spot close to the city for campers in Upper Bavaria and sailors. You can take a leisurely motorboat trip across the tranquil waters to the quiet bathing beach or visit Ammerland Castle.
The multitude of beautiful lakes is naturally a paradise for anglers. The fish species zander, carp, pike and trout can be caught in the waters.
A beer garden atmosphere with a hearty pretzel snack goes well with the camping feeling in Upper Bavaria: fresh radishes, cucumbers and tomatoes from organic farmers, accompanied by crispy, smoked sausages or creamy butter cheese from Bavaria, make healthy and hearty food possible. Of course, a freshly tapped beer is also served.
If you want to go to a restaurant, you will find Bavarian roast pork with dumplings and coleslaw as a warm main course on the menu almost everywhere. Those camping close to the lake are welcome to forgo meat and try the region's freshly caught fish. While some savour trout the Müllerinnen way, locals enjoy freshly grilled Steckerlfisch straight onto their plates in the beer garden. Pikeperch, pike and carp are just as popular.
The climate of Upper Bavaria is continental in character and ensures hot summers and (sometimes) cold winters. The weather zones range from alpine to humid continental, with Munich being the warmest city with maximum summer temperatures of up to 29 degrees. The surrounding bodies of water, such as Lake Starnberg or Lake Ammersee, also attract many bathing holidaymakers to camp in Upper Bavaria with water temperatures of up to 21 degrees.
Winter sports enthusiasts, on the other hand, hope for snow-sure pistes, so the cold months from October to March are attractive for them. A weather phenomenon in the Alps of Upper Bavaria is the Föhn wind. The air, which comes from Italy and enters the Alpine foothills as a warm wind on the northern side of the Alps, ensures mild weather in spring and autumn with far-reaching views, for example from Munich to the Zugspitze.
