The Allgäu is one of the most popular holiday regions in southern Germany and, with its green alpine meadows and imposing mountain backdrop of the Alps, offers active holidaymakers in particular the best conditions for an eventful camping holiday. Beautiful lakes such as the Forggensee or the Alpsee also make the Allgäu a popular holiday destination for families and swimmers. There are also great excursion destinations such as the famous Neuschwanstein Castle and pretty towns such as Kempten and Memmingen, which boast a rich cultural programme.

Special features of camping in the Allgäu

The Allgäu is the southernmost region of Germany and is located in the federal state of Bavaria. The region is characterised by alpine meadows, forests and the mountains of the Allgäu Alps, which form the border with Austria in the Oberallgäu. The numerous bathing lakes are very popular with camping holidaymakers, such as the Große Alpsee near Immenstadt, the Hopfensee in Ostallgäu and, of course, Lake Constance in the border triangle between Germany, Austria and Switzerland. Other well-known lakes that are ideal for a camping holiday by the water are Forggensee near Füssen, Bannwaldsee, Grüntensee and Elbsee as well as Tegernsee and Starnberger See in the Munich area. The mountainous Alpine foothills of the Allgäu are ideal for hiking. A dense network of paths leads through the entire region - some of which pass right by the campsites. The Nebelhorn near Oberstdorf, for example, is a popular excursion destination. At lower altitudes, cycling tours are excellent and can be combined with excursions to famous sights such as Neuschwanstein Castle - even with four-legged friends. If you want to relax, the numerous health resorts are the best places to go. Pretty towns such as Bad Tölz, Schwangau, Nesselwang, Kempten and Bad Wurzach are known throughout the region for their excellent spa facilities and thermal baths. With a water surface area of around 720m², the Bad Waldsee thermal spa is the largest of its kind in the region. The health resorts of Bad Hindelang and Oberstaufen are also very popular. In the cold season, the Allgäu becomes a paradise for winter sports enthusiasts. The area around the Hörner Group is one of the best-known ski resorts

Camping Hopfensee

The beautiful Hopfensee campsite is located directly on the shores of Lake Hopfensee against a picturesque mountain backdrop. Park-Camping Lindau am See

This popular campsite is located directly on Lake Constance and offers a priceless view of the picturesque old town island of Lindau. A little off the beaten track, but very quiet, is the campsite on the beautiful Elbsee lake. The family-run site impresses with its friendly atmosphere and excellent service. Campers can use the nearby lido at a discounted rate, and there is also a** whirlpool** and sauna on site. We also highly recommend the campsite's own restaurant with a great view of Lake Elbe.

Favourite places in the region

The Allgäu is a versatile holiday region with lots to discover! One of the most popular towns is the former Roman town of Kempten, which boasts a beautiful town centre and numerous magnificent buildings. No less worth seeing is Lindau on Lake Constance with its picturesque old town island and the famous sculpture of the Bavarian Lion. Active holidaymakers and nature lovers should definitely pay a visit to Oberstdorf and explore the magnificent mountain worlds of the Allgäu Alps.

Kempten

The former Roman town of Kempten is one of the largest towns in the Allgäu and has a lot to offer visitors. The beautiful city centre invites you to take a relaxed stroll. Highlights include the princely residence with its state rooms and idyllic courtyard garden and the numerous beautiful churches, such as St Magnus Church in the Franciscan monastery of St Bernardin and the baroque St Lorenz Basilica. Wellness fans will find numerous spas in Kempten. The skate park and the open-air climbing facility in Engelhaldepark are popular with families. There are also a number of interesting museums, such as the Alpine Museum in the former stables and the Allgäu Museum in the Kornhaus, where visitors can immerse themselves in the art, culture and history of the town.

Lindau

With its beautiful old town island, the town of Lindau on Lake Constance is one of the most popular excursion destinations in the region. The town's most famous landmark is the harbour entrance between the "New Lindau Lighthouse", built in 1856 and the southernmost beacon in Germany, and the six-metre-high sculpture of the "Bavarian Lion". On Maximilianstraße, Lindau's main shopping street, there are numerous lovely cafés and small shops that invite you to linger. Also worth seeing are the market square with the Catholic "Minster of Our Lady", the 15th century "Old Town Hall" and the town museum in the baroque Cavazzen House. Lindau's location on the lake also makes it an ideal bathing destination. The Parkstrandbad Bad Schachen and the indoor adventure pool "Limare" are popular alternatives in bad weather.

Oberstdorf

Oberstdorf in the **Allgäu Alps **is the perfect destination for nature lovers and active holidaymakers who want to explore the surrounding peaks. The most popular is certainly the famous Nebelhorn, which can also be reached by cable car. Other worthwhile destinations for hikes are the Große Krottenkopf, the Trettachspitze, the Mädelegabel and the Fellspitze. There are also a number of via ferratas and high-altitude trails that offer fantastic views of the Freibergsee and Gaisalpsee lakes. Other popular destinations are the Stuibenfall waterfall and the Breitachklamm gorge, the deepest gorge in the Bavarian Alps. Oberstdorf itself also has a lot to offer: The car-free spa town is known for its beautiful farmhouses from the 17th and 18th centuries and the magnificent parish church of St Johannes Baptist. The small but excellent local history museum offers exciting insights into the history of the town.

Sights and excursion tips

  • Neuschwanstein Castle: King Ludwig II's famous fairytale castle was built in 1869 and is now the most famous sight in the Allgäu. Right next door is Hohenschwangau Castle, which is also well worth a visit.
  • Nebelhorn: The 2224 metre high Nebelhorn is one of the most popular excursion peaks in the Allgäu Alps. If you don't want to walk all the way up from Oberstdorf, simply take the cable car and enjoy a comfortable ride to the top. The Hindelang via ferrata in the summit area is popular with climbers.
  • Ettal Abbey: The well-preserved medieval Benedictine abbey not only impresses with its baroque architectural elements and the magnificent church with its dome fresco, but also with a highly recommended in-house brewery.
  • Allgäu Skyline Park: A great day trip destination for the whole family. The Allgäu Skyline Park is one of the largest amusement parks in Bavaria and provides fun and excitement for young and old with its carousels, rollercoasters and white water slides.
  • Breitachklamm gorge: The 2.5 kilometre-long Breitachklamm gorge at the end of the Kleinwalsertal valley near Oberstdorf is an impressive natural spectacle. With a depth of up to 150 metres, it is one of the deepest gorges in Central Europe - the hike between thundering waterfalls and steep rock towers is an unforgettable experience.

Tour tip

The Allgäu is perfect for a road trip in a motorhome! If you don't want to stay in just one place and have a bit of time on your hands, take a long tour through the beautiful south of Germany.
