Untersee is the smaller body of water of Lake Constance and lies exactly on the border between Germany and Switzerland: the northern shore belongs to Baden-Württemberg, while the southern part belongs to the cantons of Thurgau and Schaffhausen. The diverse region is enriched by several nature reserves and one of the highlights is the island of Reichenau, which can be reached via a bridge from the eastern mainland.

Special features of camping at Untersee

The campsites on Untersee are popular with bathing fans, as most of them are located directly on pebble beaches and sunbathing lawns. The area is bursting with water sports opportunities, ranging from windsurfing in Reichenau and sailing in Horn to diving near Orsingen. The surrounding area is characterised by a peaceful landscape where nature lovers and those seeking peace and quiet will feel at home: Unspoilt shores and a rich variety of flora and fauna characterise the picture here. Hikers and cyclists have plenty of marked routes to choose from, while those interested in culture will also get their money's worth when camping at Untersee. Historic monasteries, castle ruins and palaces in the region entice visitors with interesting guided tours and museums. Families, on the other hand, will appreciate the wide range of leisure activities on offer, such as the Allensbach Wildlife and Leisure Park.

How to get there

Untersee can be reached quickly from the south of Germany by caravan. From Munich, for example, it is around 270 km to the destination, whereby in this case it is best to take the A96 motorway via Memmingen. Campers from the north, for example from Hamburg, on the other hand, have to reckon with a journey of around 820 km. On this route, the A7 motorway via Kassel is recommended and the final stretch is the A81 motorway past Stuttgart, where you should at least make a stopover, for example halfway to Fulda. The Breitenbachtal nature reserve near Michelsrombach stretches along the city limits, where you can stretch your legs. Those interested in culture should make a stop at the magnificent Fulda Cathedral, the city palace or the historic old town. On the A7 motorway from Hamburg to Hanover, holidaymakers should bear in mind the high probability of traffic jams at certain times. Especially during the school holidays, which run from the end of June to the beginning of September in summer, weekdays are recommended for arrivals and departures.

Destinations on Untersee

Untersee is home to charming peninsulas such as Bodanrück and Mettnau as well as the incomparable island of Reichenau. In addition, places such as Allensbach with its plethora of castles and Gaienhofen with its interesting Hermann Hesse House and Museum are sure to impress.

Reichenau

The island is located in the heart of the water and, together with the large Reichenau Monastery, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. History buffs can visit the Reichenau Museum, where they can learn about the cultural and historical significance of the community. The region also boasts a number of Romanesque churches, such as St George's, where you can admire wonderful murals. For a breathtaking view of the entire island, with its wide fields, vineyards and sights, campers climb the almost 440 metre high Hochwart.

Allensbach

A special highlight in Allensbach is the wildlife and leisure park, where you can marvel at bears, ibexes and lynxes up close in the outdoor enclosures. Holidaymakers will also find a falconry, a petting zoo, a climbing camp and an outdoor and indoor play area with countless fun attractions. The municipality is also characterised by three very different castles in the villages of Langenrain, Freudental and Hegne. It also welcomes guests with the Allensbach lido, where prehistoric relics from the Neolithic Age were found.

Activities and excursions

Those interested in culture have a wide choice of sightseeing attractions around the entire Untersee region. Many a hiking route takes you past historic buildings, such as the church of St Genesius in Schienen.

Countless sights such as castles, ruins and monasteries

Arenenberg Castle, including the Napoleon Museum, is located in a huge landscaped park - with a magnificent panorama of Untersee. Emperor Napoleon III spent his youth here and today it boasts an interior that is true to the original, magnificent gardens and annual special exhibitions. Campers can also enjoy a unique view over Lake Constance from the Hohentwiel fortress ruins. The Radolfzell World Monastery also appeals to those interested in culture.

Explore natural paradises on foot

A plethora of hiking routes near Untersee invite you to discover the surrounding area. The 13-kilometre route Die Pforte der Vorderen Höri - starting and finishing in Moos - offers variety through orchards, the Schienerberg and a section along the shore. Another circular hiking trail is the "Firstweg Schiener Berg", which leads past the ancient church of St Genesius in Schienen and the ruins of Schrotzburg Castle. In the municipality of Allensbach on the southern shore of Lake Überlingen is the Marienschlucht gorge, which is also ideal for long walks.

Gastronomy

When camping at Untersee, there is plenty of fish on the menu, for example in the form of pike dumplings and smoked fillets. Perch, also known as Kretzer, is particularly tasty and is served with potatoes as a side dish. The locals also like to eat Dünnele. This type of pizza is traditionally spread with sour cream and topped with bacon and onions. Gourmets choose the sweet creation, which is topped with apple slices. Tripe is just as popular, whereby parts of the beef stomach are refined with wine or tomato paste, among other things. Breakfast or a cold snack is healthy and varied thanks to local produce. Bacon, liver sausage, fresh vegetables and cheese - especially on the Swiss shore - enrich the cuisine at Untersee.
