Located to the west of Lake Constance, the green landscape of the Hegau impresses with mighty castles and fortresses such as Hohenfels Castle as well as fantastic hiking trails. While families are mainly drawn to the campsites near the idyllic Espelsee lake, active holidaymakers and dog owners look forward to long walks on the premium hiking trails. These lead to the source of the Aach or to the panoramic Hohentwiel, which is crowned by one of the largest fortress ruins in Germany.
Many of the campsites in Hegau are just a few minutes' drive from Lake Constance by car or motorhome. There are also campsites in elevated locations, which offer fantastic views of the volcanic mountain landscape. The Neuhewen, the highest of the Hegauberge, the Wartenberg and the Hohenhewen can be seen from many campsites.
The Hegi family campsite near Tengen and the Sonnentals campsite will delight almost any travelling party in the region. The Horn campsite in Gaienhofen and the facilities near Radolfzell are also very popular in the Lake Constance catchment area.
Water lovers like to opt for a campsite by a leisure lake. Campsites in the immediate vicinity of the Swiss border invite culture and landscape lovers to take excursions to the fascinating neighbouring country. Nature lovers and dog owners look forward to hikes, for example to the Blumenfeld waterfall. Campsites in Hegau can also be found in the Mediterranean-style small town of Engen on the Neckar-Alb-Aare Roman road.
As it can rain all year round in Hegau, it is worth taking rainwear with you on your camping holiday. Near Lake Constance, the climate is almost Mediterranean with mild temperatures all year round. The campsites usually open in April, when temperatures are already up to 13 degrees.
The months of May, June and September are ideal for long hikes and cycle tours. This is when the air warms up to an average of 17 to 25 degrees. In summer, there can also be periods of heat with temperatures of over 30 degrees. If it is very hot, a dip in Lake Constance is refreshing, as the temperature barely exceeds 20 degrees Celsius even at the height of summer.
