Camping is ideal for a holiday in the Alps because the right campsite guarantees short distances to nature. Hidden routes, gentle paths or challenging tours lead from the numerous campsites to the most beautiful alpine panoramas, to circular walks around the lake or to mushroom picking in the forest in autumn.
Camping has always been popular in the Alpine region of Germany, which stretches from west to east. There is plenty of space for camping enthusiasts in the foothills of the Alps with its thousand metre and two thousand metre peaks.
For many visitors, an active holiday in the mountains also includes cycling, as first-class mountain bike trails often lead past the campsites. Families, on the other hand, enjoy a relaxed camping holiday in the Bavarian Alps close to flower meadows and with the sound of cowbells as background music in an idyllic farmhouse atmosphere.
Quick, savoury dishes are popular at the mountain huts. But warm Leberkäse with potato salad is not only on the farmhouse menu, the slice of meat is also a hit when camping in the Alps - cheap, tasty and easy to prepare in a motorhome.
Anyone arriving at the hut from the snowy slopes will be looking forward to something warm: barley soup, a Graubünden speciality, is also delicious for vegetarians without a meat garnish. It can be served with a pretzel roll, which in the Alpine region is called a pretzel roll for short. Dumplings in all variations, for example bacon dumplings, are very popular with children.
Although Kaiserschmarrn originally comes from Austria, the special pancake batter is a sweet temptation at many rustic Alpine huts. With apple sauce or stewed plums, it becomes a family favourite during a camping holiday in the Alps.
The town has its roots in Roman times and you can still find relics from this period when walking through the town. It gained its supra-regional fame primarily through King Ludwig II's favourite castles, Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau. The Benedictine monastery of St Mang and the Lech Falls in Füssen are also popular sights.
The idyllic village with its dreamy old farmhouses lies in the centre of the summit panorama. Not only mountain bikers and hikers are drawn here, but also those seeking peace and quiet and nature lovers like to come to the Kneipp spa town.
Not far from the Austrian border lies Bad Reichenhall, which is known nationwide for its salt mining. This oasis of tranquillity not only attracts visitors with its beautiful natural surroundings, but also with attractions such as the salt mine and the listed Predigtstuhl railway. Those seeking relaxation can visit the Watzmann or Rupertus thermal baths or relax in the salt healing caves.
As the weather in the Alps depends heavily on the altitude, temperatures can range from highs of around 23°C to lows well below freezing.
June, July and August are the sunniest months and December to February the coldest. Snow is guaranteed in the Alps during the winter months, and the ski season begins in many places at the end of November. Mountaineers should check the weather forecasts for the Alps before and during their tour, as a change in the weather in the higher regions can be unpleasant.
Hiking in the Alps doesn't always have to mean climbing a two-thousand metre peak. A guided hut hike in the Alps is a more leisurely experience. Not only do hikers get to experience nature and insider tips on the best ski areas in the Alps, but stopping off and spending the night in small mountain huts is also part of the unique experience of Alpine camping.
Those who prefer to move their legs in a different way can switch to mountain biking in the Alps. The network of cycle paths near Berchtesgaden stretches over 700 kilometres and leads through the region's magical flora and fauna. If you cycle down into the valley from above, you can combine your excursion in the mountains with a detour to a lake or river and try out rafting in the Alps - for example in front of the Chiemgau mountains on the Tiroler Ache between Kössen and Schleching.
