Special features of camping in Hesse

Located in central Germany, the federal state of Hesse welcomes its guests. The region is known above all for its deep green forests, lively cities such as Frankfurt, Kassel and Mainz as well as wonderful landscapes - a paradise for all camping enthusiasts. Most of the campsites in Hesse are located in the midst of unspoilt nature. During their stay on site, guests are particularly impressed by the peace and relaxation that the campsites provide. The surrounding landscapes are criss-crossed by numerous cycling and hiking routes, making them ideal for those with sporting ambitions. If you need a little more action, there are also campsites nearby or in the centre of the vibrant cities of Hesse.

How to get here

Hesse in the heart of Germany is easy to reach from all directions. Many campers travel to the state during the summer holidays in particular, which is why increased traffic volumes can be expected at this time. The region is relatively extensive, which means that there are various ways to get there depending on the starting point and destination.

If you are planning to camp in Hesse in the popular region around Lake Edersee, for example, there are several motorways to choose from. Berliners are around 430 kilometres away from their destination, while Dresdeners are only 400 kilometres away.

Lake Edersee is also around 150 km from Frankfurt am Main. The A5, A7, A44 and A49 motorways are ideal for getting to the adventure region by car. Then continue to the lake via the B3, B485, B236, B251, B252, B235 or B450 motorways.

Anyone planning a camping holiday near Frankfurt, Kassel or Darmstadt will also benefit from the well-developed road network and well-signposted routes that guide caravanners and motorhome drivers safely to their destination.

Destinations in Hesse

Whether it's pure relaxation in the countryside or camping near or in the centre of a big city - Hessen is as diverse as the sports and leisure activities that the local landscapes have to offer.

Lake Edersee

Both those seeking relaxation and those with sporting ambitions will feel right at home at Lake Edersee. Wide sunbathing lawns invite you to relax and sunbathe. Anyone who needs a little action after switching off and recharging their batteries will find numerous activities on site - both on land and in the water. Lake Edersee is ideal for hiking and cycling and, of course, for water sports such as fishing or sailing. Surfing is also possible in the region and is extremely popular. Families with children like to hire a boat or canoe to explore the lake.

Frankfurt

Architecturally attractive buildings, countless shopping opportunities, excellent restaurants and cafés - the lively metropolis of Frankfurt am Main is perfect for those who love to go out. After a leisurely morning at one of the quietly located campsites, such as those on the banks of the Main, the numerous entertainment options invite you to spend fun-filled afternoons. Those interested in culture will find excursion destinations such as the Goethe House, the Alte Oper Frankfurt with its classical concert programme or the Paulskirche, a brick building that hosts concerts and exhibitions.

Interesting excursions to museums

In addition to the famous Goethe House and the Städel Museum, there are of course other institutions that are an experience for young and old. Gastronomy

Hessian chefs like to work with potatoes, sausage, cheese and bread - good old-fashioned home cooking. The culinary highlight is definitely apple wine, also known as Ebbelwoi by locals. Other specialities from the region include Grie Soß, a green sauce with seven herbs and eggs, which is eaten with jacket potatoes, and Rippche, or ribs with cabbage. During preparation, the pork is cooked until tender and then served with sauerkraut and potatoes. Those with a sweet tooth cannot avoid the Frankfurter Kranz. This is a ring-shaped buttercream cake made with brittle and cherries, among other things.

Best time to visit

The best time to travel to the Hesse region is between May and September. Caravanners and motorhome drivers who would like to spend their camping holiday in Hesse at one of the local lakes are best advised to travel in the summer months. In June, July and August, travellers can expect temperatures of around 24 degrees Celsius. The cool water of the lakes provides the necessary cooling on hot days. However, the European summer holidays also take place at the same time, so those who like things a little quieter should travel in the low season. Guests with sporting ambitions also prefer this time of year so that they can take advantage of the extensive leisure programme in mild temperatures of around 20 degrees Celsius.
