Camping Saxony Anhalt

That's why you should camp in Saxony-Anhalt:

  • Unspoilt nature, where beavers and white-tailed eagles live
  • Ride on the Brocken railway in the Harz Mountains
  • Many cultural highlights: Bauhaus, half-timbered houses and Gothic churches
  • Harz cheese, Baumkuchen and game dishes as culinary highlights

There are many reasons for a camping holiday in Saxony-Anhalt: there are the densely forested peaks of the Harz Mountains, one of the most beautiful hiking regions in Germany. The floodplain landscape in the Middle Elbe Biosphere Reserve is another natural treasure. Fans of modern design should pay a visit to Bauhaus Dessau. Thousands of half-timbered buildings add to the charm of Quedlinburg. Naumburg Cathedral is also a cultural highlight.

Between Hanover, Berlin and Leipzig, criss-crossed by the Elbe, parts of the Harz Mountains and nature parks worth seeing: the central German state has natural beauty and places steeped in history. Holidaymakers can enjoy a wide variety of camping options in Saxony-Anhalt. Camping with children and camping by the lake are just as popular as camping with your dog or camping for anglers.

Special features of camping in Saxony-Anhalt

With around 2.3 million inhabitants, Saxony-Anhalt is a rather sparsely populated federal state characterised by small-town idylls and numerous natural landscapes. One of the best-known regions, which is particularly suitable for camping holidaymakers with a great love of nature, is the south-west of Saxony-Anhalt. The Harz Mountains and their highest peak, the Brocken, rise up here, while the surrounding towns, such as Wernigerode, are characterised by historical buildings and form a successful contrast to nature. The state capital of Magdeburg, for example, impresses with its historic Gothic cathedral dating back to the 10th century. With Halle on the Saale or the architectural metropolis of Dessau-Roßlau with its Bauhaus buildings and gardens, Saxony-Anhalt also has a variety of destinations for city travellers and museum lovers.

How to get there

Thanks to its central location within Germany, the chosen campsite in Saxony-Anhalt can be reached from many federal states within a few hours' drive. A campsite in the Magdeburg area, for example, is less than 200 km away for holidaymakers from Berlin, Leipzig and Hanover. If you want to travel from the flat landscape in the far north of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern to the popular German low mountain range, you should plan 350 km or 400 km from Rostock to Wernigerode, depending on the route. It is also just under 400 km from the Ruhr area to the Harz Mountains, while camping holidaymakers from southern Germany are well advised to stagger their journey. On the 700 km journey from Lake Constance to Wernigerode, for example, a stopover in the wine-growing region around Würzburg or in the medieval town of Bamberg is recommended. The approximately 550 kilometres from Munich to Magdeburg can be driven in one go, but a short break in the Thuringian Forest is always worthwhile. A few days hiking and an original Thuringian grilled sausage and the journey to the campsite in Saxony-Anhalt can continue.

Destinations in Saxony-Anhalt

A wide variety of regions are available for camping holidays in Saxony-Anhalt. If you prefer a quieter holiday, choose the north of the state and cycle through the Altmark. If you prefer a successful compromise between city and countryside, the Magdeburg region is the right place for you.

The Altmark

Forests and heathland characterise the Altmark, one of the oldest cultural landscapes in Germany. It invites you to take long cycle tours past meadows and country lanes with stops in historic villages characterised by well-preserved half-timbered houses. This diversity makes the Altmark an attractive holiday destination for anyone looking for active recreation.

Magdeburg

Campsites around the capital of the federal state have the great advantage that travellers can spontaneously decide on excursions, cinema visits or shopping trips. This means that the relaxed flair of camping can be combined with the lively atmosphere of the city. Magdeburg Cathedral in particular, one of the earliest Gothic buildings in the whole of Germany, is well worth a visit.

The Harz Mountains

The legendary low mountain range casts a spell over active travellers as well as those longing for a change of scenery. Both in summer and winter, the highest mountain range in northern Germany is popular with day trippers and skiers. The neighbouring towns are enchanting with their historic architecture and richly decorated medieval gabled houses.

  • Magdeburg Cathedral: The Gothic church was consecrated in the 14th century and contains a wealth of artefacts and cultural treasures.
  • The Fläming Nature Park: Located in the east of the federal state, the area covers around 82 hectares and is an idyll full of villages, forests and lakes.
  • Moritzburg Castle: The castle is one of Halle's most famous landmarks. The late Gothic building houses a nationally renowned art museum.
  • The Brocken: The summit of the Harz Mountains at 1,141 metres is an Eldorado for hikers.

Top 2 insider tips

  • The Devil's Wall: the rock formation that stretches across the Harz Mountains looks almost bizarre. Cliffs of sandstone and chalk, sometimes gently rounded, sometimes grotesquely shaped like an abstract sculpture, are spread over a mountain range several kilometres long. In 2009, the Teufelsmauer-Steig, a 35-kilometre hiking trail between Ballenstedt and Blankenburg, was marked out.
  • Tangermünde: a small town with a great history. Situated directly on the Elbe, the former Hanseatic town impresses with its picturesque historic centre, including the imposing town hall. The town hall also houses the town history museum, while cultural events and concerts are regularly held in the salt church.

Activities and excursions

Holidaymakers can enjoy camping in Saxony-Anhalt in many different ways. The federal state offers a wide range of excursion destinations at any time of year.

Active activities in Saxony-Anhalt

Sport-motivated travellers will find many opportunities to pursue various activities during their camping holiday. Water enthusiasts, on the other hand, will get their money's worth on a canoe tour and stand-up paddling on the Saale. Many of the campsites in Saxony-Anhalt also offer sports activities such as ball sports facilities and group fitness classes directly on site.

Family-friendly activities on a camping holiday

The federal state also has numerous offers for camping holidays with children. Magdeburg's zoological garden is at the top of the list of things to do. The chocolatey Halloren balls come from Halle an der Saale and the fluffy Leckermäulchen desserts are made in the Burgenland district. In addition to sweet temptations, the regional cuisine is also characterised by down-to-earth savoury dishes. Fricassee with chicken, boiled potatoes and cabbage rolls is just one example. Wines from the Saale-Unstrut valley and crunchy fruit varieties from the Altmark are also popular. The Harz region also produces the particularly aromatic Harz cheese and is known for its game specialities.

Best time to visit

Mild summer months and cool winter months characterise the climate in the federal state of Saxony-Anhalt. However, despite the temperate climate, there can be strong fluctuations. Winter months with temperatures as low as -20°C have been measured in Dessau-Roßlau, as have midsummer days with temperatures of 35°C. On average, however, the daily summer temperatures are around 25°C. It is usually a few degrees warmer in the big cities than in the open meadows and fields, for example. The climate in the Harz Mountains is different. In Schierke, for example, at an altitude of over 617 metres, the maximum temperatures on an average summer's day tend to be just under 20°C, while temperatures below freezing are standard in the winter months.
