If you visit the Bavarian sea, Lake Chiemsee, or go camping in Chiemgau, you can set off on various hikes into the Alpine world. There is hardly anywhere else that combines the opportunities for swimming and hiking as well as camping in Chiemgau. Here you can experience the mountaineering villages or park your motorhome directly on the fine sandy beach.
There are several campsites around Lake Chiemsee that cater primarily for bathing holidaymakers. In addition to the option of hiring bathing mats or boats, various campsites in Chiemgau also have direct access to Lake Chiemsee. This allows holidaymakers to take advantage of the short distances to relax and enjoy the breathtaking sunsets in their destination. Some places in Bavaria have been recognised as mountaineering villages. This includes the two mountain villages of Sachrang and Schleching, where travellers can camp in the Chiemgau in the midst of unspoilt nature.
There are no large lifts for hikers here. Instead, there are flower-filled hiking trails and marvellous views of the Kaiser Mountains and the Central Alps. If you don't want to go quite so high up, look for a campsite in Chiemgau that nestles in the valley against the mountains and is therefore the ideal starting point for cyclists and mountain bikers or for those who are interested in the cultural features of their holiday region. For nature lovers, the campsites in Chiemgau are a real delight. From here, guests can reach moorland waters as well as clear mountain lakes for fishing.
Getting to one of the campsites in Chiemgau is quick and easy, as the A8 motorway runs directly through the region. However, it is best to choose the early morning or late evening hours in the high season, as the motorway is prone to traffic jams. Chiemgau is quite centrally located between Munich and Salzburg, so it's worth making a detour to one of the two cities. If you are travelling from the north of Germany, you should consider taking the B12 federal road. You can stop in Altötting on the way and visit the pilgrimage church there.
A stopover in Nuremberg or Passau is also worthwhile. Once you arrive at your destination, it is worth travelling around Lake Chiemsee to choose the most beautiful location for your campervan. There are many views of the surrounding area. For example in Rimsting on the Ratzinger Höhe, on the Samerberg or on the way through Adelholzen. For pleasant breaks during the journey, head to one of the beautiful rest areas along the A8 motorway. For example in Gruibingen and shortly before arriving in Chiemgau, at Irschenberg. In winter, snow chains are a must - especially when travelling to mountain resorts.
Caribbean flair beckons in Chieming. Travellers will find mountain idyll in Aschau im Chiemgau or Schleching. Ruhpolding has plenty to offer winter sports fans and those who love seclusion can spend their holiday in the unspoilt village of Altenmarkt.
On the eastern shore of Lake Chiemsee is the municipality of Chieming with its beautiful sandy beach. Families and their children can enjoy a carefree swim in the lake here, as the clear water is shallow. Even the littlest ones are safe here. A shady circular route takes you by bike to the observation platform with a view of the lake and the mountains.
Situated at the foot of the striking Geigelstein, the municipality of Schleching epitomises the mountain experience. As a mountaineering village, the town offers all hiking enthusiasts the special enjoyment of nature in the Chiemgau Alps. Information about guided tours or particularly scenic huts is available at the reception of the campsite in Chiemgau.
Nestled in the Priental valley, Aschau offers a wide range of recreational opportunities. Here, holidaymakers can relax in the outdoor moor pool or take a leisurely stroll along the Boar Deceleration Trail before visiting Hohenaschau Castle and learning more about the exciting history of the village. On Aschau's local mountain, the Kampenwand, there are hikes of all levels of difficulty for the whole family.
Cyclists and mountain bikers get their money's worth when camping in Chiemgau. Just like mountain hikers and nature lovers.
The cycle tour around Lake Chiemsee, which is around 63 kilometres long, is a day trip. There are plenty of views of the lake along the way and you can take a break at various nature observation points. Nature enthusiasts can discover the estuary of the Tiroler Achen and thirsty visitors can stop off at one of the beautiful beer gardens.
The Wildbichl-Alm is tucked away above the tree line in Sachrang. It is still an insider tip for mountain lovers. Those who arrive at the top not only enjoy the breathtaking view of the Kaiser Mountains, but also the home-made food and the inimitable alpine hut feeling.
Whether you set off for Fraueninsel on one of the excursion boats or by boat, the onion dome of Frauenwörth Abbey can be seen from afar. Here you can treat yourself to some peace and quiet on the island or continue across the water to Herreninsel. There it is worth visiting Herrenchiemsee Palace, one of the magnificent buildings of the former Bavarian King Ludwig II.
A holiday in Chiemgau includes a hearty snack on a mountain pasture as well as a delicious fish dish made from fresh Chiemsee fish. When visiting a Chiemsee fisherman, you can savour a Renke or a smoked fish sandwich, while fresh buttermilk in a glass or a delicious Kaiserschmarrn pancake lands on your plate on the mountain pastures. Many restaurants source their high-quality meat directly from the farmer, so that guests get their money's worth here too. If you are planning a holiday at a campsite in Chiemgau in spring, you can enjoy the wild garlic that grows in many places in the Upper Bavarian region. The herb with its garlic-like flavour is served as a salad, in sauces or with various pasta dishes.
The main time to visit the Chiemgau is in summer, when the water temperature in the lake itself can be expected to be just over 20° Celsius. In addition, the sun often shines from a blue sky. Especially on hot days, the lake offers the best way to cool off. In the mountain resorts, the average temperature is around 23° Celsius. Autumn often provides another colourful experience in the colourful forests. If you want to go camping in Chiemgau in winter, choose a destination with a winter sports centre. The campsites there are also open. One of the last places where skiing is only possible on natural snow slopes is Aschau im Chiemgau.
