Camping in Carinthia is a real holiday adventure at any time of year. Austria's southernmost province fascinates with its wonderful lake landscape, ski slopes, the highest mountain in the country and picturesque towns. Families can jump into the cool water at nature campsites on Lake Wörthersee or Lake Weissensee. For hikers, active travellers and winter lovers, the adventure hiking trails to the three thousand metre peaks are a sporting challenge.

Camping in Carinthia: All important information at a glance

Alpine sports enthusiasts are drawn to camping in Upper Carinthia in winter. The region, which is characterised by high mountains, offers beautiful motorhome pitches close to ski slopes and hiking trails. There are numerous, almost unspoilt valleys for walking, such as the Gail and Drau valleys.

Farms and idyllic alpine huts characterise the rural character of the region. Families with children can experience the beauty of the forests and meadows up close on natural farms with cow pastures and small ponds.

The Klagenfurt Basin forms the centre of Lower Carinthia with its eponymous capital. If you are interested in art and culture, but also want to be close to Lake Wörtersee, you will find suitable campsites in Carinthia with good infrastructure and first-class transport links to Tyrol or Styria.

In the cold season, Carinthia becomes a real winter sports paradise. There are 24 ski areas with over 800 kilometres of pistes in Austria's southernmost region. With above-average hours of sunshine, Carinthia is therefore the perfect destination if you want to combine a camping holiday with skiing and other winter sports. And best of all: many campsites are open all year round.

How to get to Carinthia

Visitors travelling from Germany to Carinthia cover between 350 km and 940 km, depending on the point of departure and arrival destination. Guests from Munich in Bavaria can expect a shorter journey to the capital of the Austrian state, Klagenfurt, than holidaymakers from Berlin, for example.

Motorhome drivers travelling from the south of Germany take the A8 and A10 motorways. Travellers coming from Munich take the motorway in the direction of Nuremberg/Salzburg. At Bad Reichenhall, motorists cross the border to Austria after just 130 kilometres.

At this point, a city trip to Salzburg is also a good idea. The picturesque metropolis with the Hohensalzburg Fortress and Mozart's birthplace is also a great place to stop for a bite to eat with the Salzburger Nockerln dumplings.

Continue south on the A10 motorway. After another 43 kilometres, follow the E66 exit and take the A2 to Klagenfurt/Velden/Wörthersee. The last stretch to the Klagenfurt exit is not far from here.

The most beautiful holiday destinations in Carinthia

In addition to Lake Wörthersee, other bathing waters in the surrounding area such as Lake Millstatt, Lake Ossiach or Lake Weissensee near picturesque villages are also tempting: from the capital Klagenfurt to the small village of Heiligenblut, there are historical sights and Austrian customs to discover everywhere.

Romantic on Lake Wörthersee: Klagenfurt

The largest city in the Austrian province of Carinthia not only has a long history to offer. Its picturesque location on Lake Wörthersee also promises plenty of variety for families and culture vultures. While some visitors explore the plague column or the Lindwurmbrunnen fountain in the town, others enjoy swimming or long walks along the sparkling blue waters. They can stop for a bite to eat in rustic mountain huts or in the numerous top restaurants in the capital.

Heiligenblut at the foot of the Großglockner

Almost like something out of a picture book, the small village of Heiligenblut fascinates against the huge mountain panorama of the Alps. As visitors stroll through the village with its Gothic church in the centre, the magnificent mountain backdrop of the Grossglockner watches over them.

Holiday magnet Velden am Wörthersee

The attractive climatic health resort scores with its idyllic location on Lake Wörthersee. When camping in Carinthia, holidaymakers can enjoy a boat trip across the water or a stroll through the small town, which boasts impressive Wörthersee architecture: the 19th century Villa Helene and the Mösslacherhaus built by Franz Baumgartner are beautiful to behold.

Castle town of Friesach

The castle town of Friesach is one of the most beautiful excursion destinations in Carinthia and a place where the Middle Ages are still very much alive. The numerous churches, monasteries and old houses as well as the well-preserved town walls give the town a unique atmosphere. A very special highlight is the annual Burghofspiele Friesach.

Top 5 sights

  • Velden Castle: The castle complex with its rectangular building and four polygonal corner towers was built in 1603.
  • Magdalensberg archaeological excavation site: Austria's largest of its kind impresses with architectural monuments from the former Celtic-Roman capital.
  • Hochosterwitz Knights' Castle: near Sankt Veit an der Glan, the castle stands on a free-standing rock cone dating back to the Bronze Age. The ascent is through 14 gates.
  • Cathedral in the pilgrimage town of Gurk: The church was built in the 11th century in Romanesque style. Pope John Paul II's mass here in front of more than 6,000 worshippers was legendary.
  • Landskron castle ruins: Camping holidaymakers can visit the attraction with its eagle watch and monkey mountain during their stay in Villach.

Top 2 insider tips

Großglockner Pasterze glacier railway: Take the train to Austria's largest glacier and the longest in the Eastern Alps at the foot of the mighty mountain in Carinthia. It takes guests 45 minutes to hike from the valley station to the ice.

Slow food travel in the Gailtal: the Carinthian valley cooks and farms without any emulsifiers or stabilisers.

A herbal expert in the Gailtal valley offers workshops and shows city dwellers how to enjoy and cook sustainably - whether it's baking bread, brewing organic beer or milking cows.

Activities and excursions

The mountains in Carinthia beckon in both summer and winter. Unique nature experiences can be discovered here on long hiking trails or by bike. Bright blue waters and wine regions are popular excursion destinations in the Austrian province. The many meadow and forest valleys offer a natural oasis to relax and recharge your batteries. Those interested in culture can also experience Klagenfurt and Velden against a magnificent Alpine backdrop.

Winter wonderland and hiking paradise

Even the journey to the Hohe Tauern National Park at an altitude of 2,500 metres is a unique experience. Before the area opens its green gates, guests pass Austria's most famous Alpine road, the Grossglockner High Alpine Road. 48 kilometres up, guests are guided by mighty boulders and icy mountain peaks to the high plateau of the Kaiser-Franz-Josefs-Höhe. While in summer you can discover the national park on countless hiking trails, in winter alpinists can explore the three thousand metre peaks on snow-sure pistes and glaciers.

Water power and wine enjoyment

Travellers can jump into Lake Wörthersee on a bike tour or visit one of the many wine-growing regions. A trip to the Tscheppaschlucht gorge, 5 kilometres from Ferlach, is even more exciting. Visitors descend via a footbridge, past torrential waterfalls and bizarre cliffs. After a few metres, you reach the highlights of the tour, the Tschauko Falls with its rock gate and the Devil's Bridge, where whole torrents of water come crashing down.

Events

Culinary delights, art and lots of music delight both holidaymakers and locals at the local and international festivals in Carinthia.

June

  • Gailtaler Speckfest: At the beginning of June, the old town centre of Hermagor is transformed into a bacon promenade. Here holidaymakers in Carinthia can sample homemade sausages, minced meat and delicious farmer's bacon.

July

  • World Bodypainting Festival: this event in Klagenfurt showcases art on skin, with more than 50 participants from all over the world creating impressive paintings on the bodies of men and women.

August

  • Austrian Honey Festival: From live honey extracting to a tour of the show beehives or the drone petting zoo to the Sumsi children's play park, this two-day event is all about the viscous sweet.

September

  • Gailtal Cheese Festival: For two days, everything revolves around this delicious dairy product. Numerous cheese producers present their top cheeses for consumption around the town hall.

Gastronomic highlights for campers

In Carinthia, nature, tradition and flair are also evident in the cuisine. Fresh ingredients harvested in the fields or on the mountain are used: The locals' favourite dishes include Kas and Kletznudeln, which are served to adults with coleslaw and children with a glass of milk. The Kletznudeln taste particularly savoury thanks to the filling of quark and dried pears and quickly fill you up.

The influence of La Bella Italia is omnipresent: what the Italians like as ravioli is served to guests here as Carinthian dumplings. If you don't feel like cooking or eating out while camping in Carinthia, get buttermilk and mild or savoury cheese from the farm and organise a picnic.

Weather and best time to go on a camping holiday in Carinthia

In the summer months from June to August, it is pleasantly warm in the Klagenfurt basin and the main valleys of Carinthia with maximum temperatures of over 25 degrees. The water temperatures also attract many bathing enthusiasts to the waters, despite the lakes being between 580 metres and 930 metres above sea level, with temperatures of around 24 degrees.

Thanks to its proximity to the Adriatic Sea and the Alps, the region has consistently mild temperatures in valley locations compared to the rest of Austria. In the mountains, summer temperatures range between 14 and 20 degrees.

The Alpine climate is particularly evident in winter, which lasts from November to March. January is the coldest month of the year with temperatures as low as -8 degrees, but also the snowiest.
