Have you always wanted to see volcanoes up close? You don't have to travel that far. Admittedly, the volcanoes in the Eifel are extinct. But Volcano Land offers you many other hot attractions!
Numerous mountains, valleys, streams and rivers characterise the landscape of the Eifel, which looks back on a volcanic history. And this can still be seen today: The so-called "Eyes of the Eifel" are craters of former volcanoes that have filled with rainwater over the course of time. The highest peak in the Eifel is the "Hohe Acht". The top of the extinct volcano is almost 750 metres above sea level.
But the Eifel is not only known for its volcanic remnants from times long past. Motorsport enthusiasts are also familiar with the region: it is home to the "green hell", as the Nürburgring race track is known due to the ups and downs. The Nürburgring owes its name to the Nürburg, which has been enthroned on a volcanic basalt cone for over 900 years and is open to visitors within the race track.
So that you can discover this unique natural landscape and don't have to spend your time looking for a pitch for your motorhome, we have visited the 7 best campsites in the Eifel. We present them to you here.
Our visit to Camping Kohnenhof takes us onto foreign soil: We are near Eisenbach in Luxembourg. A bridge takes you over the border river Our into Germany - and to numerous hiking trails: Cross the Müllertal valley with its beech forests and listen to the streams flowing past the high rock faces. The river is not only great for swimming and splashing around, but also for canoeing, boating and fishing. The two historic towns of Clervaux and Vianden are well worth a visit - admire the medieval monuments and treat yourself to local specialities in a bistro.
We start in Germany at Oberweis in Rhineland-Palatinate. Prümtal-Camping Oberweis is located in a wonderful area, surrounded by meadows and forests that invite you to go on extensive hiking or cycling tours. Swimming enthusiasts can swim their lengths in the large outdoor pool, while the children enjoy the slide. Discover the Irrel waterfalls on a hike through the Devil's Gorge, where rapids carve their way through the sandstone. And at Gondorf Adventure Park, you'll find adrenaline and relaxation: let your adrenaline levels rise on one of the more than 45 attractions before you relax again while watching the more than 200 wild animals.
Camp Hammer in North Rhine-Westphalia is a great holiday destination, especially for horse riding enthusiasts. Because not only you, but also your horse are welcome here! Explore the fantastic bridle paths on horseback that lead you through the beautiful countryside and cool your legs with a dip in the Rur. Afterwards, treat yourself to a small snack in the restaurant. In the evening, round off the day in the motorhome while Jolly Jumper shares food with his new-found friends on one of the grazing paddocks in the shelter.
The Eifel-Camp Freilinger See is located in North Rhine-Westphalia. Here you can not only show off your tricks in the half-pipe and jump ramp in the skater park, but also splash around in the swimming lake or fish for pike! Admire the flora of the Lampertstal juniper nature reserve or wander through the romantic Ahr valley. Be fascinated by volcanoes in the Lava Dome. You can observe native animals in the Rhineland High Game Park and the Kasselburg Eagle and Wolf Park. Are you a motorsport fan? The Nürburgring is not far away - take the opportunity to drive the famous Nordschleife yourself, or step on the gas on the go-kart track!
The Zell-Mosel camping park is located in Rhineland-Palatinate on the banks of the Moselle. Here you can swim, go water-skiing or rubber-banding across the water or explore the landscape around the Moselle on a kayak trip. Moorings are available for boat owners. Of course, you can also discover the region on a bike tour - return to the campsite by excursion boat, cycle bus or Moselle wine railway. Hikers are also well catered for here: the Moselsteig trail and a variety of themed hiking trails lead through the vineyards - treat yourself to a break along the way and savour the local wines!
Our next campsite is located near Stadtkyll in the Volcanic Eifel on the banks of a reservoir: Camping Landal Wirfttal. Boredom is a foreign word here! Float across the lake on a pedalo, whizz through the woods on a mountain bike or head for the heights with outdoor climbing! Test your aim and patience at mini golf or improve your balance on the low rope, where you balance on a rope at a height of 50-60cm. Discover the water-filled volcanic craters - called maars - in the Dauner Maare nature reserve on a hike through the unique natural landscape. Cool off with a dip in the water of the Gmünden or Schalkenmehren maars.
The last stop on our journey is in the same federal state: In Prüm, the Waldcamping Prüm welcomes us. From here, the hiking trail "Musepfad Schneifelpfad" takes you directly to the Birresborn ice caves. Discover the caves, which once served as an ice storehouse and refuge. With a bit of luck, you might even spot one of the many bats that live in the caves. Bad weather? The visitor mine "Grube Wohlfahrt" takes you back to a time when ore was mined and metal was extracted here. The indoor swimming pool offers water fun regardless of the weather, and you can watch the latest Hollywood films at the local cinema.
