Northern Hesse is not only the homeland of the Brothers Grimm but also mine. Since I grew up here, many of my childhood memories are connected to fairy-tale castles such as Sababurg and Löwenburg. Anyone who loves fairy tales should take a look at the Fairy Tale Route map — most of its locations are in northern Hesse. I only later learned to appreciate the charm of the half-timbered towns when I realised that not all houses look like this. Towns such as Fritzlar, Homberg and Melsungen are among my favourites. Kassel’s Bergpark with the Hercules and its impressive view still fascinates me to this day. I’ve also loved visiting the Edersee since childhood.
My tip: I find Fritzlar particularly beautiful. The town dates back to the Middle Ages and is historically very interesting. The small centre consists of many half-timbered houses, some of which are now crooked — adding to its charm.
A holiday at the campsites in northern Hesse is perfect for anyone who loves low mountain ranges. In the Rhön, excursions up to the 950-metre-high Wasserkuppe are worthwhile, while the Fulda-Werra-Bergland will delight you with its mixture of mountains and river landscapes. When camping with children, the Frau-Holle-Land with its numerous nature trails is one of the top holiday regions in northern Hesse.
Northern Hesse is a particularly recommendable destination for nature lovers. For example, you can take the children on the nature trails in Frau-Holle-Land and the Habichtswald Nature Park. Information boards tell you all about the flora and fauna of the region. The dense coniferous and deciduous forests, vantage points such as the Wasserkuppe and the second largest reservoir in Germany make the region so interesting. If you want to be active, hop on a bike and follow rivers such as the Werra or the Fulda. The latter also flows through the World Heritage city of Kassel. A visit to the Electoral Palace and Wilhelmshöhe Mountain Park is an absolute must.
Northern Hesse is generally worth a visit at any time of year. However, most campsites are only open between April and October. The region experiences a big rush during the warm summer days. In June, July and August, you can expect temperatures of up to 22 degrees Celsius. Sometimes even higher temperatures are reached. Comparatively little rain falls in July and August.
Hiking fans also get their money's worth between April and June and from September to early November. In spring, the maximum temperatures are between 13 and 18 degrees Celsius. Similar conditions can be expected in September and October. The colouring of the leaves in the forests of northern Hesse also provides a fantastic backdrop.
