The sound of two sea coasts, flat green countryside and small Halligen islands and islets in between - the German federal state not only boasts a picturesque Baltic Sea landscape that is ideal for exploring when camping in Schleswig-Holstein. The North Sea part of Schleswig-Holstein is also ideal for camping. Holidaymakers can discover the harbour feeling and larger cities as well as a colourful range of sights that can be explored by bike or while hiking between the seas.
North Sea or Baltic Sea - on holiday in Schleswig-Holstein, nature lovers choose the best places to camp. While the sea in the west with the Schleswig-Holstein Wadden Sea National Park is an Eldorado for relaxed hikes, the sea in the east of the state attracts visitors with long cycle paths and fjords.
There are also campsites on the islands of Amrum, Sylt and Fehmarn. Here, Schleswig-Holstein's hidden bays and natural dunes alternately invite you to swim, walk and cycle in the salty air.
Several European languages and dialects can be heard on the campsites between the North Sea and the Baltic Sea. Danes, North Frisians and Low Germans in particular enjoy this traditional form of holiday here. A trip to the cities of Kiel, Lübeck or Husum is also possible while camping in Schleswig-Holstein.
If you ask the locals what they serve on the table, the answer is often fish. This is actually available in all kinds of variations, as a fish roll, smoked or tasty gratinated.
It is not only the animals from the water that are prepared in a hearty way, meat dishes are also usually sumptuous: Kale with smoked pork loin and boiled sausage are on every restaurant menu in Schleswig-Holstein. Vegetarians will also find something on the menu, as root vegetables and sweets are extremely popular with the locals.
If you haven't tried stovte Rüben yet, you probably don't know how delicious the North German Förtchen is: the yeast cakes baked in a special pan melt in your mouth and can be bought in bakeries and enjoyed as a small snack while camping in Schleswig-Holstein.
Flensburg, Kiel, Lübeck - Schleswig-Holstein's major cities are easy to reach via the major motorways with a motorhome or tent in tow. The major cities are not only cultural metropolises, but also ideal starting points for experiencing camping in Schleswig-Holstein with the whole family.
While Sylt and Westerland in the far north glitter as a posh bathing paradise for jetsetters and party-goers, campers looking for peace and relaxation are drawn to Fehmarn or Amrum. With fields, wide paddocks and meadows, hiking in Dollrottfeld is also unique. Heiligenhafen has a picturesque, maritime town centre, idyllically situated in a bay.
The climate table for Schleswig-Holstein shows June to August as the best months to travel, with highs of around 21°C. While the islands promise guaranteed sunshine in summer, the weather is usually cooler inland.
Autumn is sometimes harsh, but spring is usually pleasantly warm. With water temperatures of around 17°C, the islands are refreshing and pleasant for families and swimming enthusiasts. If you want to go surfing or kitesurfing, you can count on good wind conditions all year round in Schleswig-Holstein.
There is something for everyone when it comes to the sights that visitors can discover while camping in Schleswig-Holstein. Younger guests will be thrilled at Hansa-Park: The adventure giant with four live shows and 37 rides in Sierksdorf near Lübeck can hardly be completed in one day.
Culture vultures and fans of Thomas Mann will love the Buddenbrookhaus in Lübeck. Visitors can experience a different kind of art and culture at the Haithabu Viking Museum or the European Hanseatic Museum in Lübeck. Island magic on long beaches and a visit to the Fehmarn Marine Centre with its shark aquarium and underwater tunnel make the island unique.
You will want to dive into the U 995 submarine, which is now a museum ship on the eastern shore of the Kiel Fjord near the naval memorial. A boat trip under the high bridge near Rendsburg across the Kiel Canal at sunset can be very romantic.
Anyone on holiday on the Baltic Sea or North Sea can hardly miss them: the beautiful islands in the sea, which can be reached by ferry or over bridges by car and train. On Fehmarn, holidaymakers enjoy visiting one of Schleswig-Holstein's many riding stables and galloping along the beach. On Amrum, the 32 metre high Setzerdüne dune rises up, from where you have a good view. Camping holidays in Schleswig-Holstein are also enriched by excursions to Heligoland, the only German high seas island in the North Sea. Both seas can be crossed on a tour via the Kiel Canal. Lake Ratzeburg in the Lauenburg Lakes Nature Park is a shallow body of water with camping and bathing jetties on the western shore and unspoilt nature in the east. The Schleswig-Holstein Wadden Sea National Park with its seal colonies near Amrum and Föhr is a special natural experience for the whole family.
