The beautiful nature that surrounds Angeln is perfect for hiking and cycling tours. A well-developed network of paths without any significant inclines takes you past the beaches of the Baltic Sea through the green inland. Small meadows, beech forests and the idyllic course of the Schlei river break up the sheer endless expanse of landscape. However, it is not only active holidaymakers who appreciate the north-east of Germany, but also families with children, couples seeking relaxation and nudists. Here, everyone will find their favourite campsite in Angeln.

Special features of camping in Angeln

Let your gaze wander over the Baltic Sea from the gently sloping sandy beach, play with your children on the shallow shore or make the most of the good thermals as a sailor or windsurfer - camping in Angeln between Flensburg, Kappeln and Schleswig combines relaxation, sport and holiday fun on the water or on land. Some park operators start the season as early as March, others welcome their guests between April and October.

The campsites in Angeln are located directly by the sea, picturesquely along the Schlei river or quietly by the inland lakes. Standard features include electricity hook-ups, hot water and sanitary facilities. On top of this, most sites are equipped with a kiosk, catering facilities and a children's playground. Dogs are welcome at many campsites.

How to get there

Potsdam, Nuremberg, Karlsruhe and Düsseldorf are 431 km, 766 km, 784 km and 551 km away respectively from the municipality of Angeln and its largest city Flensburg. The standard journey is via Hamburg. The northern German metropolis is 159 km south of the destination and has excellent connections to the A7 motorway.

Many drivers who are travelling longer distances choose a stopover destination on their way to their camping holiday. For example, travellers from southern Germany combine their overnight stopover with a city stroll in Leipzig, the capital of Saxony, depending on their route planning. Others spend the night in the Harz foreland, Clausthal-Zellerfeld or Goslar.

An alternative, especially for campers from eastern Germany, is a journey via Lübeck. The Hanseatic city on the Baltic Sea is connected to the A20 motorway. But no matter which route you choose, you should avoid conurbations such as Hamburg and Lübeck during rush hour. In addition, traffic increases noticeably during the German and Danish holidays.

Destinations in Angeln

City, country, river - the Angeln region impresses with its many facets.

Flensburg

There is definitely more here than just points at the Federal Motor Transport Authority. Germany's northernmost harbour town impresses with its sights, for example the 12th century St. Mary's Church, the Nordertor border building and the famous brewery with the Plopp.

Schleswig

The pretty little town on the bay of the Schlei not only impresses with its green recreational areas by the water, but also with buildings worth seeing. Whether it's St Peter's Cathedral dating back to 1200, the enchanting Gottorf Castle or the Haithabu Viking Museum - Schleswig is an impressive blend of culture and nature.

Husby

The holiday village with its rural charm fascinates with its rural idyll. Beautiful farmhouses, lovingly restored, characterise the scenery with their North Anglian architectural style. Sights include the St Vincentius Church and the Waldemar Oak, a natural monument that has stood guard for over 800 years.

Glücksburg

Whether water sports or relaxation in the Fördeland thermal baths - the former adopted home of English, Danish and Norwegian kings scores with its activities. What's more, the fairytale moated castle from the 16th century attracts thousands of guests year after year.

Westerholz

Wellness, active and bathing holidays are very popular on the shores of the fjord. Visitors are also spoilt with home-style cooking. The Unewatt museum village is particularly worth a visit, offering visitors a deep insight into rural life.

Activities and excursions

Sitting comfortably in a beach chair, spreading out a beach sheet in the dunes, looking for amber or flying a kite - boredom is a foreign word on the Angeln peninsula.

Sporty on the go

The municipality of Angeln is not only a paradise for sailors, kiters and surfers, but also for hikers and cyclists. On designated paths, you can walk past extensive reed beds and lush yellow rapeseed fields, through forests and meadows. Tours along the coast or the border with Denmark are particularly attractive.

Going out

Flensburg offers a varied programme for night owls. Above all, the streets around the Nordermarkt are for many the most popular centre for a night out. The villages and seaside resorts, on the other hand, are more tranquil, where cosy pubs and restaurants tempt you to stay a while or seasonal events provide variety.

For the family

The dinosaurs have survived in Tolk near Schleswig. The family amusement park is home to giant lizards, which watch over the site between carousels, playgrounds and miniature houses. Or how about a leisurely cruise on the Schlei or Baltic Sea? Young captains will discover their holiday home from the water.

Gastronomy

The gastronomy in Angeln has its culinary influences from Frisian, Lower Saxon and Danish cuisine. So it is hardly surprising that the hot dog sausage Røde Pølser with fried onions is also on the menu alongside crabs and stews. But as befits a federal state between two seas, dishes with freshly caught fish and seafood are among the absolute classics.

Whether it's trout with creamed horseradish, smoked sprat or cod fillet with boiled potatoes - the traces of traditional delicacies always lead back to the water. These are accompanied by the sailor's dish Labskaus, a tasty potato dish with beef and a fried egg. A fresh, tangy pilsner from regional breweries and the alcoholic national drink Angler Muck are served. For dessert, we recommend the fruity dessert red fruit jelly with berries or vanilla sauce.

Best time to visit

Although temperatures in the municipality of Angeln fluctuate between 10°C and 16°C in April and May, spring is recommended for outdoor activities. Outdoor activities are generally very popular, partly due to the healthy, stimulating climate. Usually from June onwards, the thermometer reaches the 20°C mark for the first time, the daily hours of sunshine increase and the Baltic Sea slowly warms up until it reaches its highest average temperature of 19°C in August.

With summer temperatures of 23°C and more in midsummer, swimming in the sea is a welcome way to cool off. In autumn, hikers, kiters and cyclists get their money's worth again with consistently mild 15°C temperatures. Tip: Even on warm days, you should pack a light jumper, a gilet or a windproof jacket.
