There is a lot to discover on Fehmarn! The first port of call for many visitors to the sunny island is the main town of Burg. Here you will find the famous south beach, numerous sights and lots of leisure activities for the whole family. The village of Bojendorf in West Fehmarn is a little more tranquil. In addition to some great beaches, the beautiful Wallnau waterfowl reserve is also located here. Another popular place to relax is Meeschendorf, which is known far beyond Fehmarn for its beach of the same name.
With 6,000 inhabitants, Burg is the main town on Fehmarn and a popular destination for holidaymakers. There is always something going on in the lively harbour town with its many shopping facilities and leisure activities. Beautiful excursion destinations include the venerable St Nikolai Church and the local history museum. A hit with younger visitors is the marine centre, which is home to the largest shark tank in Germany, and the Galileo world of knowledge. However, the biggest attraction is certainly the south beach: Fehmarn's main beach offers the finest white sand, gently sloping water and is also completely stone-free. The beach is supervised in summer. There are also many restaurants and shops on the beach promenade, as well as a seawater swimming pool.
The tranquil village of Bojendorf in the west of Fehmarn is a wonderful retreat for those seeking relaxation and nature lovers. The Wallnau waterfowl reserve, one of Fehmarn's main attractions, is located nearby - the beautiful landscape of ponds, reed beds and meadows makes for an excellent photo opportunity. However, Bojendorf also has plenty to offer beach holidaymakers: both the guarded Bojendorf beach and the charming natural Wallnau beach are within easy reach. Bojendorf beach is particularly suitable for families.
Around three kilometres from the main town of Burg, the small municipality of Meeschendorf is located on the Meeschendorf beach of the same name. The child-friendly natural beach is a good alternative to the south beach and is patrolled by the DLRG in high season. There are beach chairs, toilets and snack bars on the beach. Nearby, adventurous holidaymakers can let off steam in the high ropes park. The nearby cliffs are very popular with anglers and Meeschendorf is also a good starting point for exploring Fehmarn's network of more than 170 kilometres of cycle paths.
Still have a little time after your island holiday on Fehmarn and don't feel like driving home again? Then we recommend a road trip in a motorhome along the German Baltic Sea coast! A wonderful tour starts in the old Hanseatic city of Lübeck and leads from there to some of the most beautiful places on the German Baltic Sea: famous seaside resorts such as Kühlungsborn and Heiligendamm, the old harbour towns of Rostock and Wismar and the enchanting Bodden landscapes in the Western Pomerania Bodden Landscape National Park on the Fischland-Darß-Zingst peninsula. The tour ends in the harbour town of Stralsund, which boasts one of the most beautiful old towns on the Baltic Sea.
