Special features of camping in Fehmarn

The Baltic Sea island of Fehmarn in Schleswig-Holstein is the third largest island in Germany and is one of the places with the most hours of sunshine in Germany - hence the name "sunny island". The 78 km long coastline is also home to numerous powder-white sandy beaches, idyllic bays and campsites close to the beach: the perfect ingredients for a successful camping holiday by the sea.

The campsites on Fehmarn are spread all around the island. Whether on West Fehmarn, on the south island, from the easternmost point Staberhuk to Marienleuchte in the north: The sunny island offers beautiful pitches for caravans, motorhomes or tents pretty much everywhere. The south beach near the island's capital Burg is particularly popular. Fehmarn's main beach has particularly fine white sand and is considered the best beach on the entire island.

Sulsdorf in the south-west offers rural charm and is therefore particularly suitable for hikers, anglers and cyclists looking for peace and quiet. Kiters and surfers are drawn from here to the natural beach at Püttsee. Water sports enthusiasts can also be found at Gold or at the Wulfener Hals campsite. Individual holidaymakers who would like to explore the north-west side of the island will be surprised by the magical dune landscape between Markelsdorfer Huk and Puttgarden.

Fehmarn is also interesting for private fishermen and anglers among the campers. The best fishing spots for angling and deep-sea fishing are in Staberhuk and Fehmarnsund. Dogs are allowed on many campsites and there are also some dog beaches, for example in Meeschendorf. In the peak summer season, it is advisable to book a pitch in good time!

Favourite places in the region

There is a lot to discover on Fehmarn! The first port of call for many visitors to the sunny island is the main town of Burg. Here you will find the famous south beach, numerous sights and lots of leisure activities for the whole family. The village of Bojendorf in West Fehmarn is a little more tranquil. In addition to some great beaches, the beautiful Wallnau waterfowl reserve is also located here. Another popular place to relax is Meeschendorf, which is known far beyond Fehmarn for its beach of the same name.

Burg

With 6,000 inhabitants, Burg is the main town on Fehmarn and a popular destination for holidaymakers. There is always something going on in the lively harbour town with its many shopping facilities and leisure activities. Beautiful excursion destinations include the venerable St Nikolai Church and the local history museum. A hit with younger visitors is the marine centre, which is home to the largest shark tank in Germany, and the Galileo world of knowledge. However, the biggest attraction is certainly the south beach: Fehmarn's main beach offers the finest white sand, gently sloping water and is also completely stone-free. The beach is supervised in summer. There are also many restaurants and shops on the beach promenade, as well as a seawater swimming pool.

Bojendorf

The tranquil village of Bojendorf in the west of Fehmarn is a wonderful retreat for those seeking relaxation and nature lovers. The Wallnau waterfowl reserve, one of Fehmarn's main attractions, is located nearby - the beautiful landscape of ponds, reed beds and meadows makes for an excellent photo opportunity. However, Bojendorf also has plenty to offer beach holidaymakers: both the guarded Bojendorf beach and the charming natural Wallnau beach are within easy reach. Bojendorf beach is particularly suitable for families.

Meeschendorf

Around three kilometres from the main town of Burg, the small municipality of Meeschendorf is located on the Meeschendorf beach of the same name. The child-friendly natural beach is a good alternative to the south beach and is patrolled by the DLRG in high season. There are beach chairs, toilets and snack bars on the beach. Nearby, adventurous holidaymakers can let off steam in the high ropes park. The nearby cliffs are very popular with anglers and Meeschendorf is also a good starting point for exploring Fehmarn's network of more than 170 kilometres of cycle paths.

Sights and excursion tips

  • Fehmarn Sound Bridge: The impressive, almost 1 kilometre long bridge over the Fehmarn Sound connects the island of Fehmarn with the mainland and is one of Schleswig-Holstein's landmarks . The bridge is now a listed building and is one of Fehmarn's most popular photo motifs.
  • Fluegge lighthouse: The lighthouse on Fluegger Strand is located a few kilometres west of the Fehmarn Sound Bridge and is a perfect destination for a day trip. The 38 metre high tower can be visited and offers wonderful views over the island from the top.
  • Wallnau Waterfowl Reserve: A paradise for waterfowl: The 300-hectare nature reserve on the west coast of the German island serves as a breeding and sanctuary for migratory birds, where up to 80 bird species find ideal conditions for breeding. If you're lucky, you may even spot sea eagles here.
  • Fehmarn Marine Centre: The impressive 3,000 m² seawater aquarium in Burg offers exciting insights into the underwater world of Fehmarn. The main attraction for visitors of all ages are the various species of shark, such as the nurse shark and the sand tiger shark.
  • Burg Local History Museum: If you would like to enjoy a little culture and are interested in the history of the island, visit the Burg Local History Museum. The property in the heart of the town also includes the so-called Predigerwitwenhaus. It is the oldest surviving house on the island.

Tour tip
