Camping in St. Peter Ording is one of the best ways to spend a relaxing North Sea holiday. The spa resort in the west of Schleswig-Holstein offers the best conditions for enjoying your time by the sea to the full. The campsites are usually just a few steps away from the water and are well equipped.

Camping St. Peter-Ording: A dream North Sea holiday with many possibilities

Whether it's family camping with children, a summer holiday by the sea or a relaxing weekend for two by the North Sea. With its endless sandy beaches, fascinating dune landscapes and a wide range of leisure activities, St. Peter-Ording inspires anew every year.

As the only German seaside resort with a sulphur spring, St. Peter-Ording, or SPO for short, has been the most popular holiday destination on the North Sea peninsula of Eiderstedt since the German Empire. This has not changed to this day: The mixture of beach, dunes, salt marshes and the endless expanse of the Wadden Sea exerts an almost magical attraction.

The main attraction for many holiday campers is the beach at St. Peter-Ording, which is one of the most famous beaches on the North Sea. However, the dunes, salt marshes and pretty little villages such as Tating also invite you to take long walks away from the beach.

The facilities at the campsites in St. Peter Ording are excellent. Campers with motorhomes, tents, caravans or rented caravans can enjoy spacious pitches close to the beach, pools, extensive wellness facilities and clean sanitary facilities. This makes a North Sea holiday fun!

In addition to pitches for motorhomes, many sites also offer tent pitches, rental accommodation, holiday flats or mobile homes. A special experience is a holiday on a farm, such as the well-known Kantorhof. Many sites offer kitchens for self-catering. There is usually also a restaurant as well as camping shops, bread delivery service and gas bottle service.

The leisure facilities at the campsites in St. Sankt Peter-Ording are also impressive. There are sand playgrounds, leisure areas and climbing mazes for children. Active holidaymakers can let off steam with water sports on the beach, beach sailing or beach volleyball. During the holiday season, there is also usually a children's entertainment programme and colourful activities for young and old.

Camping with a dog in Sankt Peter-Ording

Dog owners can take their four-legged companions on camping holidays in SPO with a clear conscience. Most campsites and camping parks allow dogs. Nevertheless, campers should enquire about special rules such as the obligation to keep dogs on a lead.

Outside the campsites, dogs must generally be kept on a lead. This applies in particular on the dykes, in sheep farming areas, sheep pastures or in nature reserves such as the Wadden Sea National Park. The dunes may not be entered - with or without a dog.

Dog beaches in St Peter Ording

Dogs are allowed on most of the beaches in St Peter Ording. However, certain areas, including most of the beach chair areas, are closed to dogs. In the Bad, Böhl, Dorf / Süd, Ording and Ording Nord districts, however, there are special dog beaches, i.e. areas for guests with dogs. These beach sections have dog showers and dog exercise areas, for example.

How to get to SPO

Although Sankt Peter-Ording is located at the end of the North Sea peninsula of Eiderstedt, the holiday resort is easily accessible by motorhome. Campers coming from the south (Hamburg) can reach St. Peter-Ording via the A23 motorway. First leave the motorway at the Heide-West junction and then take the B203 to Wesselburen. Then take the L305 past the Eidersperrwerk and after about half an hour you will be in St. Peter-Ording. If you are travelling from the north, it is best to take the B5 towards Husum to St. Peter-Ording. First take the B5 past Husum, which then becomes the B202. Before Tönning, holiday campers turn right onto the B202 and simply follow this road until they reach St. Peter-Ording.

The piles are used to anchor the houses firmly to the ground at high tide and are a great photo opportunity, especially at sunset. Holidaymakers have plenty of time to admire the pile dwellings on an extended walk along the beach. You should also take the opportunity to take a look at the 1,000 metre-long pier that leads across the salt marshes to the beach.

Gastronomic highlights for campers

Even self-catering campers who prefer to go shopping in the camping shop or supermarket should try North Frisian cuisine. It's worth it! A particular speciality in St. Peter-Ording is salt marsh lamb. The animals graze near the coast on the salt meadows of the dykes and marshes.

The meat tastes particularly tender and flavoursome due to the free-range farming. The local chefs marinate the leg of lamb in a strong herb marinade and then sear it before putting it in the oven. The salt marsh lamb is served with blackcurrant jelly and a tangy Nordic beer.

Thanks to its proximity to the sea, fish is naturally at the top of the menu. Fried flounder and smoked halibut are considered real delicacies. Fresh North Sea crabs and fish sandwiches with pickled herring are also delicious. In many places, people traditionally treat themselves to Mehlbüddel (flour pouch), which is served as a dumpling or in cake form with pork belly meat. The dish is topped with stewed plums or apples. A typical dessert on the menu is Friesentorte, which consists of a mixture of shortcrust pastry, puff pastry, whipped cream and plum jam.
