The Wendland region in eastern Lower Saxony is bordered by the River Elbe to the north and is characterised by the Drawehn mountain range to the west. In general, it is bursting with idyllic nature, which is particularly attractive for campers with dogs, among others. Numerous small villages are nestled in this oasis of tranquillity, with the unique historic round villages in particular proving to be gems.
Thanks to the flat landscape, low population density and species-rich flora and fauna, many hikers and cyclists come to the area. Equestrians also enjoy the wide forests and meadows of the horse-friendly Wendland. There are also carriage rides for romantics and guided donkey hikes for families on the programme. Golfers visit the 18-hole golf club on the Göhrde, which is open all year round and welcomes beginners and advanced golfers. The region also boasts a number of rivers and lakes, which are particularly appealing to swimming fans and anglers. Those interested in culture are particularly attracted by the almost 100 listed round villages such as Satemin and Bussau. These attract visitors with a central village square and a circular arrangement of historic half-timbered houses.
Wendland is also suitable for a weekend trip from the north of Germany. Hamburg, for example, is only around 130 km away from the holiday destination, and holidaymakers are best advised to take the A39. Travellers from Berlin prefer to take the A24, which will take them to their destination in around 250 km.
In contrast, guests travelling from the south of Germany can expect a longer journey. From Frankfurt am Main, the quickest route is via the A5 and A7 motorways - this is around 450 km. A stopover at the Northeim Lake District Waterfowl Reserve, which is halfway along the route, is a good idea. Thanks to the beautiful natural surroundings and a motorway exit in the immediate vicinity, it is an ideal place to get your feet wet. From Munich, it is around 640 km to Wendland via the A9 towards Leipzig. This route proves to be the shortest, but there is a high probability of traffic jams at certain times. Especially during the school summer holidays from the end of June to the beginning of September, weekdays are recommended for arrival and departure.
Those who like to spend their camping holidays surrounded by nature should spend their holiday in Gartow. For a wider selection of sights, we recommend larger towns such as Dannenberg, from where it is just a stone's throw to the small round village of Lübeln.
Among the campsites in Wendland, those in Gartow are characterised by a particularly great location. The town is located in the Lower Saxony Elbe Valley Biosphere Reserve and is part of the Elbe River Landscape UNESCO World Heritage Site. It surrounds Lake Gartow and borders on Lake Laasch and the southern bank of the Elbe, providing ideal conditions for swimming fans and anglers. A water playground, mini-golf course, boat hire and thermal baths around Lake Gartow promise fun for young and old.
Dannenberg also boasts a top location, as it borders the Lower Saxony Elbe Valley Biosphere Reserve and the Elbhöhen-Wendland Nature Park. In addition, the graceful Lake Thielenburg lies in the centre of the town. Those interested in culture will be delighted by the listed town houses from the 17th century and the St John's Church as well as the Waldemar Tower - both dating from the 13th century. From Dannenberg, campers can reach the roundel village of Lübeln with its roundel museum in around 18 kilometres, and an outdoor and indoor swimming pool await visitors directly in the village.
For sporty campers, there is a huge number of cycling and hiking routes in Wendland. One of the region's highlights is a sightseeing flight over the countryside in a hot air balloon.
Adults with children opt for the family tour around Lake Gartow on a cycling trip. Among other things, a game reserve with a wolf nature trail awaits on this tour. The bowling centre in Lüchow is also popular with families thanks to several children's lanes, an indoor tennis court, a dartboard and several pool and table football tables.
Animal lovers can take a walk along the beaver trail with its informative information boards. The route leads past a sculpture park and Gartow Castle. A stop at the Klaus Bahlsen Tower is a good idea on a hike along the Seeadler circular trail. It offers a fascinating view and a permanent exhibition about the eagle.
The Balloon Adventure company and the sports airport in Rehbeck allow campers to marvel at the Lower Saxony Elbe Valley Biosphere Reserve and the Rundling villages on a hot air balloon flight or from a small aeroplane. If holidaymakers prefer a boat trip on the Elbe, there is the option of taking a trip on a sofa raft in the town of Hitzacker.
When camping in Wendland, many visitors look forward to the traditional local cuisine. One of the well-known Wendland delicacies is bratels. Here, sliced and heartily seasoned beef is basted with hot butter after searing and served with beetroot and a piece of bread. Other typical specialities include fried beans with roasted bacon and herring salad. In the latter, the fish is cooked together with veal or lean pork and mixed with onions, cucumber, apples and celery, among other things. After the usually savoury meals, sweet desserts are served. These range from chocolate truffles and Guelph pudding with wine foam sauce to a fruit tart made from delicious shortcrust pastry.
July and August are the warmest months in the region with temperatures of up to 23 degrees Celsius. The water is also around 20 degrees Celsius at this time of year, making this the best time for swimming enthusiasts to go camping in Wendland. The coolest period is from December to March, with January being the coldest month. Temperatures fluctuate from minus 3 to plus 3 degrees Celsius, which is particularly pleasing for winter campers and winter sports enthusiasts such as snowshoe hikers. The amount of precipitation should also be taken into account when planning your holiday. This peaks in June, while February is the driest month of the year.
