Framed by proud mountains and green hills, it is perhaps the loveliest pearl among the 70 or so lakes in the Salzkammergut. The water shimmers in a rich blue, fresh air blows around your nose. Camping on Lake Wolfgangsee stands for pure enjoyment of nature and an ideal mix of hiking holidays and bathing fun.
The campsites on Lake Wolfgangsee in the Austrian Salzkammergut region boast a relaxing atmosphere, great hospitality and modern, well-maintained facilities. Some are located directly on the lakeshore and are therefore ideal for a spontaneous dip in the fresh water or for indulging in your favourite water sport. Others, such as in Strobl, are situated on a gentle hill and offer fantastic views of the surrounding mountains.
For those who prefer small campsites with plenty of peace and quiet, the pitches around the Zirlerhof farmhouse in the village of Abersee are ideal. Romantik-Camping Wolfgangsee-Lindenstrand, Seecamping Wolfgangblick and Appesbach, Camping Birkenstrand and Komfortcamping Berau are all located in the immediate vicinity of the lake. Alternatively, the Strandcamping Podersdorf on Lake Neusiedl or the Seeterrassencamping Ried are recommended for a wonderful camping holiday.
Several campsites near the shore welcome campers with marvellous pitches.
Romantik-Camping Wolfgangsee Lindenstrand offers its guests a wonderful view of the surrounding mountain landscape and many pitches right on the shore promise a fantastic camping holiday. The 140 metre long sandy beach with adjoining summer meadow is of course popular with campers who want to enjoy the hours of sunshine and warm temperatures.
The pebble beach and the bathing jetty are the starting point for many adventures for young and old. The sauna and kayak hire are further arguments in favour of a stay at Camping Birkenstrand.
Bathing fun also takes centre stage at Seecamping Wolfgangblick. The site owes its name Wolfgangblick to its truly marvellous view of the impressive mountain landscape of the Salzkammergut and the lake.
The Berau comfort campsite and the Seecamping Appesbach campsite offer beautiful alternatives in the region around Lake Wolfgangsee. A little further afield, Strandcamping Podersdorf on Lake Neusiedl or Seeterrassencamping Ried are wonderfully located sites for active recreation.
With a total area of 13 km², Lake Wolfgangsee is mainly located in the north-east of the Austrian state of Salzburg, with a smaller part in Upper Austria. Munich is around 186 kilometres away from Lake Wolfgangsee. To get there, first take the A8 motorway from the Bavarian metropolis to Salzburg.
There you change to the Austrian A1 West motorway, take the B145 Salzkammergut road at Regau to Gmunden and continue along the picturesque shores of Lake Traunsee towards the spa town of Bad Ischl. From there, travellers take the B158 Wolfgangsee road, which crosses the Jainzenberg through the Kaiserpark tunnel, and after around 12 km reach the municipality of Strobl on the southern shore of Lake Wolfgangsee.
For a final refuelling stop in Germany, we recommend the Bad Reichenhall Süd service station not far from the Upper Bavarian village of Piding, where you can fortify yourself with various snacks and sandwiches. Vignettes can also be purchased there. Austrian travellers need these, as tolls are compulsory on the country's motorways and motorways. The stickers, also known as "Pickerl" stickers, are available at service stations and petrol stations near the border as well as at automobile clubs and online as a digital vignette linked to the licence plate.
Tradition and modernity combine in a refreshing way in the picturesque villages on the shores of Lake Wolfgangsee, inviting you to go on discovery tours.
St. Wolfgang is situated in a picturesque lakeside location at the foot of the 1,783 metre high Schafberg. A nostalgic cog railway, the steepest in the whole of Austria, takes you up the mountain in comfort. The pilgrimage church of St Wolfgang, which attracted streams of pilgrims in the Middle Ages and is still famous today for its late Gothic winged altar by the masterful Tyrolean artist Michael Pacher, is also worth a visit. If you like, you can visit the doll museum, stroll along the beautiful lakeside promenade and then enjoy a cup of coffee on the terrace of the legendary Hotel Im Weissen Rössl.
The roots of the great composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart lie in St. Gilgen, as his mother Anna was born there and his sister Maria, who was always called Nannerl, also made her home in the idyllic village. The Mozart Fountain in front of the town hall, the Mozart House with an exhibition well worth seeing, as well as handmade Mozartkugeln and chocolate Nannerl-Schmatzerl are all reminders of the musical genius and his family. A guided tour of the Gut Aich monastery, the local history museum with an original lace maker's flat and a ride on the Zwölferhorn cable car are also part of the leisure programme in St. Gilgen.
Lake Wolfgangsee boasts drinking water quality and is a true paradise for anyone who can't get enough of canoeing, stand-up paddling, diving, sailing, surfing and wakeboarding - not forgetting extensive tours with the WolfgangseeSchifffahrt fleet and kayak hire boats. But there is also plenty on offer for young and old on land.
There is an extensive network of hiking trails around Lake Wolfgangsee. A historic pilgrims' path leads from St. Wolfgang over the mighty rocky peak of the Falkenstein to the shores of St. Gilgen. Another popular destination is the summit of the Schafberg, known by the meaningful name Himmelspforte (Heaven's Gate). The via ferrata on the Postalm and the Zwölferhorn mountain bike circuit are adrenaline-fuelled. But you can also keep moving with golf, horse riding or a horse-drawn carriage ride.
Whether it's a summer toboggan run or sledging in the snow, a fast-paced lake ride on the banana or pirouetting on the artificial ice rink: Lake Wolfgangsee is a great adventure for the little ones all year round. Llamas, goats and geese can be experienced up close in the village of animals in St. Gilgen, while the educational bee trail in Strobl quenches the thirst for knowledge of little nature explorers. The all-weather Abarena leisure park, on the other hand, attracts visitors with a water playground, trampoline facilities, an underground crystal mine and numerous other attractions.
Fish lovers are in seventh heaven at Lake Wolfgangsee. The local restaurants and fish fryers serve freshly caught Reinanken, trout and char, also known as Alpine salmon. In numerous farm shops, you can also discover regional delicacies such as cold-smoked smoked meat, sheep's sausage and flavoursome cheese made from cow's and goat's milk. Add fresh bread baked in a wood-fired oven and you have the perfect treat.
Travellers can expect plenty of rustic flair and all kinds of homemade delicacies at the mountain huts around Lake Wolfgangsee. Those with a sweet tooth may opt for sweet farmer's doughnuts, a fluffy milk cream strudel or a fresh Kaiserschmarrn pancake with generous dollops of apple sauce. But there are also savoury options, such as cheese dumplings fried in clarified butter or a hearty snack with a traditional potato spread made from potatoes and sour cream.
The weather at Lake Wolfgangsee is characterised by a moderate climate. Summers are short and warm, winters are frosty. Rainfall is always to be expected, with September and October being among the driest months. The mild spring and autumn offer the best conditions for mountain biking and hiking. From June to August, average temperatures of 23 degrees Celsius are reached, while the water warms up to an average of 19 degrees Celsius.
Even if the Wolfgangsee has pleasant bathing temperatures, it can quickly become cloudy and chilly on the way in the mountains. A protective windbreaker should therefore always be in your hiking rucksack. In winter, you need to wrap up thick anyway. Then it's time for skiing and cross-country skiing on the snow-covered slopes of the Postalm and the Zwölferhorn.
