Villach is located in Carinthia, just a few kilometres from both the Italian and Slovenian borders. This makes the town in Austria's southernmost province ideal for day trips to both countries. The majority of campsites in Villach are located around Lake Faak and Lake Ossiach. Therefore, anyone who prefers to look out over glistening water from their caravan will find their paradise for camping in Villach. Villach is surrounded by high mountain ranges, including the 2,166 metre-high local mountain Dobratsch and the Nockberge at up to 2,441 metres. The distance by caravan from Germany is at least 180 km from Berchtesgaden in the south-east to around 1,390 km from the northernmost city of Flensburg. The quickest route is to take the A8 from Munich and change to the A10 Tauern motorway at Salzburg. This motorway leads straight to Villach and is left at the Villach-West exit. This is reflected in delicacies such as sasaka, a spread made from smoked bacon, a Slovenian delicacy as well as spicy alpine cheese and salami, which are the favourite accompaniment to the typical snack, a cold snack served with crusty farmhouse bread. The region with its numerous lakes and rivers is also known for its diverse dishes made from freshly caught fish such as trout, char and grayling, as well as succulent meat from grazing cattle and alpine lambs in all variations. Carinthians enjoy pure apple juices or a sparkling apple wine with their meals, followed by a strong Swiss stone pine schnapps to aid digestion.
With a moderate to warm climate, the holiday resort of Villach is ideal for camping. The Carinthian valley is open to the south, which promises plenty of sunshine. In summer, average daytime temperatures of around 25 degrees Celsius are ideal for outdoor activities. Active holidaymakers can look forward to colourful natural landscapes in spring and autumn and enjoy cycling, hiking or Nordic walking tours in mild temperatures. In winter, frost is common and it snows extensively during the ski season. The best camping weather is from the beginning of May to the end of September.
