The following campsites receive many good ratings on PiNCAMP and are particularly recommended destinations for a camping holiday on the Croatian Adriatic as ADAC super campsites.
This well-kept campsite on the island of Krk is located directly by the sea in the beautiful bay of Pušća. The site is not far from the motorway bridge to the mainland and is the perfect starting point for island hopping in the Croatian Adriatic. Many of the pitches are close to the pebble beach. If you arrive without a motorhome, you can also stay in one of the well-equipped mobile homes. Thanks to a wide range of leisure activities for children, the campsite is ideal for families with children. There is also a dog beach.
Located in the far south of Kvarner Bay, Zaton Holiday Resort in the Zadar region is a real family paradise. The beautiful resort by the sea offers a huge aqua park, a sandy beach, its own shopping centre and numerous restaurants. The pitches with electricity and water are located in a park-like setting. Alternatively, you can stay in mobile homes, flats or in the particularly chic glamping accommodation. Zaton Holiday Resort has a separate area for guests with dogs.
Sandy beaches are rare in Croatia. This is exactly why the Straško campsite on the island of Pag is a real insider tip! The site is located on a beautiful 2-kilometre-long sandy beach near the popular holiday resort of Novalja. But if you don't just want to relax in the sun, you don't have to worry: There is a wide range of leisure activities for families, including sports, yoga, children's entertainment, outdoor cinema and many other activities. The glamping tents with their own bathroom and fridge are particularly popular with couples.
Camping Čikat is one of the largest and most popular campsites on the island of Lošinj and offers everything you could wish for from a relaxing holiday in the Croatian Adriatic: spacious pitches, well-kept sanitary facilities and a wonderful location in a unique natural landscape. In addition to the two beaches, the campsite has a large pool area, playgrounds, bike hire and a mini club for the little ones. The island's capital Mali Lošinj is just under 2 kilometres away. If you don't want to walk, there is also a bus stop at the campsite.
Camping Slatina is the perfect place if you want to spend a relaxing camping holiday with your dog on the beautiful island of Cres. The operators are the initiators of the "Camping cum canes" project and offer a complete service for dog owners: a large dog beach, exercise areas for the four-legged friends, dog grooming and even individual dog training sessions. However, a stay is also worthwhile without a four-legged companion. The holiday resort is located directly on a beautiful bay on the west side of the island and offers two wonderful pebble beaches for swimming. The pitches are situated on terraces behind the beach, guaranteeing fantastic views of the sea.
The Kvarner Bay with its islands is one of the most versatile holiday regions in Croatia and is popular with campers for good reason. Crystal-clear water and fantastic beaches invite you to spend carefree days by the sea. Wonderful natural landscapes, dense pine forests and lively island towns such as Mali Losinj, Opatija and Lovran are the perfect contrast to a beach holiday. Campsites can be found on all the islands, for example on Krk, Cres, Losinj, Rab and Pag. Most of the campsites are located on the coast, with many pitches right by the sea. However, as in the whole of Croatia, there are only a few places with sandy beaches, mostly pebble or stone beaches. As a rule, the holiday resorts offer pitches for caravans, motorhomes or tents. If you are travelling to the Croatian Adriatic without a motorhome, you can also rent mobile homes, bungalows or holiday homes at many campsites. As a popular and well-known holiday region, the facilities at the campsites are usually very good. At PiNCAMP you will find numerous ADAC super campsites in the Kvarner Bay, which are characterised by great service, a large sports and leisure programme and well-kept sanitary facilities. In the high season in summer, many campsites offer entertainment and animation programmes for children. Guided excursions to the best sights in Kvarner Bay show you the beauty of the Croatian island world.
Are you travelling in a motorhome in Kvarner Bay? Then simply hop from island to island and get to know the diversity of the region. A good starting point is Krk, the largest island in Kvarner Bay. You can easily reach Krk from the mainland via the motorway bridge. From here, you can then take the ferry to the green island of Cres, where things are a little quieter. Finally, you cross a bridge again to the island of Losinj, which is one of the sunniest places in Europe. The islands of Pag and Rab can be reached either by ferry from the mainland or from Krk.
Dogs are allowed at many campsites in Kvarner Bay. To enter Croatia, you will need a valid EU pet passport, and your dog must also be vaccinated against rabies and microchipped. Many campsites are specially designed for dog owners. In our campsite overview, you can see at a glance whether the campsite is dog-friendly.
Travelling to the Croatian Adriatic from the neighbouring countries of Slovenia, Austria and Germany is straightforward. The region's road network is well developed and signposted. However, during the peak season, especially in the first two weeks of the German summer holidays, there is often heavy traffic on the motorway. From almost all German cities, the route to Croatia leads via Munich. The journey to Kvarner Bay from here is around 500 kilometres. With a few short breaks, you can easily cover this distance in one day. From Munich, first take the A8 motorway to Salzburg. Once in Austria, follow the signs for the A10 motorway until you reach Slovenia. From the Slovenian capital of Ljubljana, continue south until you reach the Rupa border crossing in Croatia. From here, continue to the harbour town of Rijeka. Take the coastal road to your holiday destination in the Bay of Kvarner. If your campsite is on an island, ferries leave from here to all the islands.
Kvarner Bay stretches along the upper Adriatic and lies between the Istrian peninsula in the west and the Croatian coastline in the east. Popular destinations include the impressive coastal town of Opatija and the lively harbour town of Rijeka, which is considered the gateway to the beautiful islands of Kvarner Bay. Each of these islands has its own unique character - Krk, Cres, Losinj, Rab and Pag are particularly popular with campers.
The harbour city of Rijeka is a good starting point if you want to get to know the islands of the Kvarner Bay, as ferries depart from here to most of the islands. However, a visit to Croatia's third largest city is also worthwhile. The beautiful old town, the old harbour and the imposing Tsrat fortress are great excursion destinations that you shouldn't miss during your camping holiday in Croatia.
The seaside resort of Opatija will enchant you with its coastal promenade, which offers a wonderful view of the town and neighbouring islands. Opatija is also a shopper's paradise, offering fantastic beaches and plenty of opportunities for water sports enthusiasts. Culture enthusiasts won't miss out here either: impressive sights and historic buildings, such as St James' Church or the sophisticated Villa Angiolina, will transport you back to the bygone days of the Danube monarchy. Opatija is the perfect place to combine a camping holiday by the sea with an exploration of Croatian culture and history.
The island of Krk is located on the northern Adriatic Sea and is connected to the mainland by a bridge - ideal for camping enthusiasts who want to explore the Kvarner Bay on a Croatia road trip by motorhome. Krk is the largest island in the Adriatic and is particularly popular with campers for its well-preserved cultural assets, unspoilt nature and paradisiacal bathing bays with turquoise-blue water. Krk is home to picturesque villages such as Baska and Dobrinj, as well as centuries-old monuments and museums that are particularly appealing to culture lovers. The old town centre of the eponymous town of Krk is particularly impressive, with sights such as St. Mary's Cathedral and the Frankopan Castle overlooking the sea.
Cres is one of the quieter islands in the Bay of Kvarner and is well worth a visit, especially for its pretty capital and the wonderful nature in the centre of the island. The old town of Cres has a strong Venetian influence and is best explored on a leisurely stroll. The tiny village of Lubenice, which is spectacularly situated on a cliff, is also worth a visit. Another great excursion destination is the freshwater lake Vransko jezero in the centre of the island.
Losinj is now separated from Cres by a narrow channel, but the two islands used to be connected. You can easily reach Losinj from Cres via a bridge and it is definitely worth a visit. With more than 2500 hours of sunshine a year, the island is one of the sunniest regions in Europe. The harbour town of Mali Lošinj is the largest - and for many visitors the most beautiful - island town in Kvarner Bay. You will find many indigenous plants in the town's scented garden. The best way to explore the island is to take the beautiful cycle path from Mali Lošinj to Veli Lošinj.
The wonderful landscape of the Kvarner Bay invites you to actively explore it. There is a wide range of sports and leisure activities on offer around the campsites, from water sports to cycling and hiking.
The best way to explore the varied islands and mainland of Kvarner Bay is on two wheels. A total of 1,300 kilometres of 19 official cycle paths lead along the coast and across the islands as well as over the mountains in the hinterland. This opens up completely new perspectives on the breathtaking landscapes of the region. The Risnjak National Park and the Ucka Nature Park, where there are some particularly exciting routes, are very popular with mountain bikers.
Crystal-clear water, colourful reefs and an abundance of colourful sea creatures make Kvarner Bay a paradise for divers. Around the bays, you can admire fascinating rock formations, sunken ships and unique flora and fauna during a dive. For beginners, there are numerous professional diving centres where you can take courses or hire high-quality diving equipment. Other water sports such as sailing and jet skiing are also on offer.
The cuisine of Kvarner Bay consists mainly of specialities from the sea. Freshly caught fish and seafood delicacies are served grilled or fried and are among the most popular dishes in local restaurants. During your camping holiday in Kvarner Bay, you can also look forward to typical Croatian dishes such as the famous Dalmatian or Istrian prosciutto, boiled lamb and mussels of all kinds. Croatia has also been cultivating and producing high-quality, exquisite wine for decades. Both in the coastal areas of Istria and inland, winegrowing is a time-honoured tradition and offers an exceptional range of delicious wines. Whether red or white - you are sure to find something to your taste here.
The best time to visit Kvarner Bay for a beach holiday is summer. Sun worshippers and beach lovers prefer to travel in the hot summer months of June, July and August. Active holidaymakers, on the other hand, prefer spring and autumn. At this time, you can visit the sights in pleasant daytime temperatures of 15 to 20°C and go on long hikes and cycle tours through the beautiful landscapes. Thanks to the mild, Mediterranean climate, Kvarner Bay is a year-round destination for camping enthusiasts. Temperatures rise above 25°C as early as May and remain warm until the end of September. July and August are the warmest months and are considered the peak season in Croatia, mainly due to the European summer holidays. In addition, the water temperature does not fall below 20°C in any Croatian seaside resort during this time - ideal for a relaxing beach holiday.
