Camping on Rügen brings holidaymakers to Germany's largest island. Situated in the north of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, the island will delight you with its white chalk cliffs and golden beaches. Surrounded by enchanting coastal forests and just a few steps away from the refreshing waters of the Baltic Sea, nature lovers can stay overnight at selected campsites and comfort fans at 5-star campsites. Luxurious shower facilities, whirlpools, well-equipped barbecue areas and catering combine nature camping on Rügen with pure comfort.
There is a large selection of campsites and motorhome pitches on Rügen. Whether you spend your holiday in the north near the mighty chalk cliffs, on the brackish shores of the Bodden or in the renowned seaside resorts of Göhren, Sellin and Binz - there are high-quality camping options everywhere on Rügen.
In the east of the island, where the famous spa resorts with their spa architecture line the coast, many of Rügen's campsites are surrounded by enchanting green pine forests. Beautiful sites can also be found in Thiessow in south-east Rügen on the Mönchgut peninsula or on the neighbouring islands off the coast, such as Ummanz to the west of Rügen.
Nature lovers on Rügen are particularly drawn to the Mönchgut-Zicker nature reserve and Thiessow, located on the peninsula, where you can enjoy the fresh scent of pine needles and a breeze from the Baltic Sea. Emerging from the forest, visitors are greeted by white beach landscapes and sometimes metre-high dunes, where you can go on extensive hikes.
The nearby communities of Göhren, Sellin and Binz are in no way inferior. The campsites often offer their guests numerous leisure activities, ranging from bike hire to water sports courses. Due to the excellent wind conditions in the region, many visitors dedicate their holidays on Rügen to surfing and kitesurfing. The conditions in the north of the island are particularly suitable for this. There are also first-class sailing harbours with connections to campsites between Lohme and Putgarten.
Here is a selection of the most popular campsites on the island of Rügen.
Simple but beautiful nature campsite on the Zudar peninsula at the southern tip of Rügen. The site is located in the Rügen National Park and offers shady pitches for motorhomes and caravans. There is also a family-friendly, gently sloping bathing beach on the site.
The Drewolke campsite offers unparcelled, individual pitches directly on the Baltic Sea beach. The majority of them offer great views of the Baltic Sea, while holiday homes, holiday flats and mobile homes are also available to rent. The site also has an adventure playground for children and a kite school.
Child and family-friendly campsite in the Banzelvitz mountains on the Great Jasmund Bodden. The site has a petting zoo, a children's playground and a forest adventure trail for young and old. Cycle paths and a well-developed network of hiking trails invite you to explore the surrounding area. Dogs are allowed.
Due to its island location, Rügen's cuisine is naturally characterised by seafood. The fish and seafood from the Baltic Sea and brackish water areas are seasoned with salt, pepper and regional herbs and fried until crispy. Eel in dill sauce is one of the absolute classics.
As a rule, equal parts fresh and smoked fish are cut into pieces and fried. This is then used to make the stock, refined with white wine, dill and lemon juice, which forms the basis of the creamy sauce that is poured over both the eel and the boiled potatoes.
Like the eel, goose white sour is an absolute must in the restaurants of Rügen. This dish is an aspic made from young farm goose and veal bones, flavoured with bay leaves, thyme, marjoram and mugwort. Soup greens and a few drops of light-coloured balsamic vinegar are added. This tasty dish is usually served with crispy fried potatoes and tartar sauce.
For dessert, you can treat yourself to a tasty Schlupfkuchen. The pastry is made with fresh fruit, especially sugared apples. The pastry is best enjoyed with whipped cream or vanilla sauce on one of the terraces of Rügen's seaside resorts. It is accompanied by freshly brewed coffee or hot chocolate and, of course, a marvellous view of the Baltic Sea.
One of the most popular regions for camping on Rügen is the south-east of the island. Sellin, Binz and Göhren, the most famous seaside resorts on Rügen, are located here. They were already top destinations for holidaymakers at the turn of the century and are still characterised by the sophisticated spa architecture of that era.
White plastered spa houses, spacious terraces and cosy beach chairs characterise these resorts. What all the communities have in common are the spectacular piers. In Sellin, the construction measures a full 394 metres, making it the longest of its kind on the island. The pier is crowned by a diving gondola, in which holidaymakers on Rügen can explore the seabed with dry feet.
Compared to the big three seaside resorts, Thiessow, the narrow peninsula to the south of Göhren, is somewhat quieter. Many campers spend their time here on the picturesque wooded coast. The campsites in this region are good starting points for hikes and cycle tours to the 38 metre-high Zicker Mountain and Zicker Lake.
In the north of Rügen, the dramatic cliffs of the Königsstuhl with the famous chalk cliffs and Cape Arkona await nature lovers. In addition, towns such as Glowe, Lohme and Sassnitz are among the best sailing harbours on the island. On the elongated Wittow and Bug peninsulas, the village of Dranske is a highly recommended destination due to its proximity to the Vorpommersche Bodden landscape and the neighbouring high shore paths.
The holiday season usually begins at the end of May. Then the thermometer gradually rises to around 20°C and reaches top values of over 30°C in the sun in the following months. The sea breeze provides freshness. The water temperatures around Rügen are around 17°C during this time and encourage swimming and sporting activities.
The weather on Rügen in August is considered perfect. In spring and autumn there are good conditions for cycling and hiking. Winter days, on the other hand, bring harsh weather for Rügen's residents and visitors. However, even at this time of year you can still go on interesting excursions if you are well wrapped up.
The chalk cliffs are one of the absolute highlights of Rügen. The cliffs of the Jasmund National Park in the north-east in particular are a popular destination for all nature lovers. If you opt for camping between Rügen's harbour towns of Sassnitz and Lohme, you can reach the Königsstuhl and the 161-metre-high Piekberg in no time at all on a hike. An equally impressive panorama awaits travellers at the 43-metre-high Cape Arkona on the Wittow peninsula, one of the northernmost points of the island.
One of the most famous sights on Rügen is the treetop walk near Binz. Between the Lesser Jasmund Bodden and the historic Prora holiday complex from the Third Reich era, you can climb 82 metres into the air and look out over the forests and coastline. You can even make out the hills of the Jasmund National Park and the Hanseatic church towers of Stralsund on the horizon.
Not far from Binz, the Granitz hunting lodge is well worth a visit. The complex has been enthroned on the wooded Tempelberg hill since the Renaissance and has been altered several times over the centuries. Its current appearance is characterised by the ornate central tower, which was designed by Karl Friedrich Schinkel in the 19th century. Today, the building serves as a lookout point and exhibition space.
Rügen offers countless great excursion destinations. The best way to explore the island is on foot or by bike - thanks to the well-developed network of paths, this is no problem.
Hiking is one of the most popular leisure activities on Rügen. The Jasmund National Park in the north-east in particular offers the best conditions for extensive tours on foot. Just 7 kilometres north of Sassnitz, for example, is the 118-metre-high Königsstuhl with its Victoria view of the chalk-white cliffs. The best way to reach this natural wonder is via the 11-kilometre-long Hochuferpfad trail, which leads from Sassnitz to Lohme. The Baltic Sea coastal cycle path also leads past the sight.
The Rügen circular route is the most famous cycle path on Rügen and runs for 278 kilometres around the Baltic Sea island. There are numerous pretty villages along the way where you can spend the night. Of course, you can join the route at any point. The town of Altefähr near Stralsund is a particularly popular starting point.
If you spend your time camping on Rügen with the children, you can explore Rügen on the Rasender Roland narrow-gauge railway. The snorting steam locomotive connects Altefähr in the south with Putbus, Binz, Sellin and Göhren. One of the biggest attractions for families is Dinosaurland Rügen. The 9.5-hectare site is located on Spycker Lake and fascinates visitors with its true-to-original models of prehistoric creatures. There are various activities on offer for children, where they can learn through play.
In Zirkow, families can pick their own tasty fruit at Karls Erdbeerhof Rügen or enjoy the many leisure activities on offer. Workshops, farmers' markets, live music and much more are on offer all year round. Those who prefer fresh fish to fruit can go fishing on Rügen. Excursions to Rügen's Bodden landscape around the villages of Lietzow and Ralswiek are particularly popular. On rainy days, holidaymakers on Rügen can visit the many cinemas or relax in one of Rügen's spas.
