The Ruhr metropolises are hotspots for art and culture. The landscape is varied and rich in forests and rivers. The Ruhr has beautiful riverbanks that are ideal for hiking and cycling. Riverside camping is just as possible in Germany's largest conurbation as glamping or family-friendly camping.

Essen is considered an upmarket address among the cities in the Ruhr region. The city is home to exclusive villas and elegant suburbs. The former Zollverein Coal Mine Industrial Complex is now a complex of museums, galleries and cabaret theatres.
Where the Ruhr flows into the Rhine, the harbour city of Duisburg enchants with its urban charm. The Ruhr Valley cycle path promises 230 kilometres of free travel. The cycle route runs from the source of the Ruhr near Winterberg to where it flows into the Rhine near Duisburg. The various stages can be easily cycled from the adjacent campsites and introduce holidaymakers to the special features of the landscape in a healthy way.
In the Ruhr region, you can not only get your legs in shape by cycling, but also your arms by rowing. Some wonderful campsites are located directly on the banks of the Ruhr. Canoe and kayak hire is of course available on site.
The mining museum in Bochum provides interesting insights into the coal mining of the last century. Curious visitors can go down into the colliery. Elsewhere, monuments and cultural centres have been created from the former industrial sites. In addition to the Zollverein colliery in Essen, the gasometer in Oberhausen is well worth a visit. In Germany's highest museum, there are interesting industrial design and art exhibitions as well as informative events and theatre performances.
The inns in the Ruhr region cook a lot and plenty of food. The hearty dishes are a mixture of the peasant cuisine of Westphalia and the varied dishes of the Rhineland. For the cuisine of the Ruhr region, one thing was particularly important: it had to satisfy the hard-working population and be inexpensive.
Hot, hearty snacks, such as the popular currywurst with chips or meatballs with coleslaw, could be bought at almost any campsite in the Ruhr region. Eggs in mustard sauce, Himmel und Erde and Pfefferpotthast are also regional specialities. They go well with a light or dark beer followed by a clear schnapps. Less high-proof are the popular beer drinks mixed with sherbet or fruity beer punch.
The climate in the centre-west of Germany is considered temperate. Warm summers and pleasant spring and autumn months make for a pleasant stay. With temperatures of over 20 degrees Celsius, the summer months are best suited for camping in the Ruhr region.
There are some beautiful bathing spots on the banks of the Ruhr, and the Baldeneysee in Essen, the Wolfssee near Duisburg, the Silbersee and the Seebad in Haltern also attract bathing holidaymakers. Campers should be prepared for different weather conditions when camping in the Ruhr region. Swimsuits and sun hats are just as important as sturdy shoes and rain jackets. Some campsites are even open in winter.
