The Ahr Valley is ideal for anyone who wants to spend a holiday with children in Germany. Located to the south of the Rhineland, the region offers excellent opportunities for active leisure activities, such as hiking, cycling and rowing. Many campsites in the Ahr Valley are located directly on the river and offer boat and fishing hire and much more.
The Ahr Valley is a favourite retreat for Rhinelanders in particular. Just a short drive from Cologne and Bonn, picturesque mixed forests spread out along the steep slopes on the banks of the Ahr. Relaxing hiking excursions can be undertaken up into the mountains, offering marvellous views of the green countryside. Camping in the Ahr Valley can also be combined with a touch of wellness. Health resorts such as Bad Neuenahr offer their visitors high-quality spa treatments. The high-quality healing waters, which have a high mineral content due to the volcanic rock, are utilised here. The Ahrgebirge is also famous for its excellent wines, which can be tasted in wine bars and at wine festivals.
Travellers from northern or eastern Germany will usually head for the Rhineland as their first stopover. Cologne and Bonn are relatively easy to reach via the A1 and A4 motorways. It is around 600 kilometres from Berlin and 430 kilometres from Hamburg. Those interested in culture can take a break to visit Cologne Cathedral and the Roman-Germanic Museum, for example.
The A565 motorway then takes you south along the Rhine and through the Kottenforst forest to the Ahr. It is around 60 kilometres from Cologne to Bad Neuenahr-Ahrweiler and Altenahr. Alternatively, travellers can take the B9 federal road along the banks of the Rhine to Remagen and turn west there. From the south, the A61 is the best connection to the Ahr Valley. The road passes Mannheim and Worms, among other places, where holidaymakers can follow in the footsteps of the Nibelungs for a moment. From Munich and Stuttgart, the A8 motorway takes you to the A6 and finally to the Ahr Valley junction. Another option is the A3 motorway via Frankfurt.
Wine villages, spas and tranquil medieval towns on the edge of picturesque mountain slopes are among the most beautiful destinations for campers in the Ahr Valley.
Bad Neuenahr is the best-known holiday resort in the Ahr Valley. The town is famous for its healing springs, which are used in various wellness centres. The water from the carbonated Apollinaris soda spring is also bottled for drinking. In the town centre, half-timbered buildings on the market square and the idyllic spa gardens offer opportunities for a stroll.
Altenahr is one of the most important wine centres in the Ahr Valley. More than 10 hectares of the vineyards are planted with red grapes, which are processed into high-quality red wines in the region. The vineyards are also ideal for relaxing hikes, for example up to the Übigberg or the Altenahrer Eck.
The people of Mayschoß can look back on a long wine tradition, which is explained to visitors in detail in a special museum. Here you can see the historic vaults where the barrels were once stored. The ruins of Saffenburg Castle are also worth a visit and can be explored as part of a hiking excursion. In the district of Laach, the wooden St Anne's Bridge is one of the landmarks of the Ahr Valley.
The hilly landscapes of the Ahr Valley are perfect for hiking and cycling. The region also boasts a number of wellness offers.
One of the most famous cycle routes in the region is the 77-kilometre Ahr cycle path. It follows the banks of the river to where it flows into the Rhine. In many places, you can take detours into the mountains and to other rivers such as the Kyll.
With its wooded low mountain slopes, the Ahr region is of course also ideal for hiking. Many holidaymakers set off on the famous Ahrsteig trail, which leads through the enchanting countryside in six stages. The 108-kilometre route takes hikers to the Ahrschleife and the Kalvarienberg monastery, among other places. A variation is the Ahr Valley Trail along the riverbank.
Travellers will find a wide selection of spa clinics and thermal spas throughout the Ahr Valley. The Ahr thermal baths, where visitors can warm up in one of the eight saunas, are among the best places to relax. In summer, outdoor pools such as those in Ahrweiler also open.
Many of the festivals in the Ahr Valley are centred around wine. In addition to wine markets and wine festivals, traditional medieval markets and pyro events are also organised.
The flagship of the Ahr Valley is its high-quality wine. In autumn, the major wine villages such as Altenahr, Mayschoß, Rech, Dernau and Ahrweiler organise festivals where you can sample the fine wines. Even outside of the harvest, it is worth visiting one of the wineries or wine shops in the communities and getting advice on the best winegrowers' products. In keeping with the wine, the Ahr Valley offers hearty cooking. A real classic is Köksjeszupp, a creamy bean stew with white beans, bacon and ribs. The restaurants also often serve rolled roast with a spicy marinade and sauerbraten. It is served with potato salad and brown gravy.
The Ahr Valley is generally worth a visit at any time of year. However, most holidaymakers who come to camp in the region opt for the period from May to October due to the pleasant temperatures. In spring, average maximum temperatures of around 18 degrees Celsius can be expected. In June, the average temperature rises to 21 degrees Celsius and in July up to 23 degrees Celsius. These climatic conditions last until around the end of September. On sunny days, the thermometer sometimes even shows well over 25 degrees Celsius. The months of May, June, September and October are ideal for hiking.
