with trusted ADAC classificationMighty mountains, blooming alpine meadows, crystal-clear lakes: Berchtesgadener Land is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful places in Germany to spend a camping holiday in the mountains. The district in south-east Bavaria offers dreamlike Alpine landscapes with some of the most famous peaks in the Eastern Alps, including the famous Watzmann. Active holidaymakers in particular will find the hiking trails, mountain bike routes and via ferratas ideal. In winter, six fantastic ski resorts beckon. And for those who simply want to relax, the idyllic Königssee is one of the most beautiful mountain lakes in Bavaria.
The idyllic landscape and the fantastic mountain panoramas with the mighty Alpine peaks make Berchtesgadener Land one of the most beautiful destinations for active holidaymakers and nature lovers in Germany. There are around 250 kilometres of hiking trails in the Berchtesgaden National Park: perfect for extended tours with the whole family - even with four-legged friends. Walks on the Königssee footpath or the famous Malerwinkel circular trail, for example, start directly at the campsites. Those who want to go higher can set off from Schönau on a summit tour, for example to the famous Watzmann-Hocheck.
The campsites in Schönau to the north of Lake Königssee, such as the well-known Grafenlehen campsite, are popular with water lovers. From here, it is not far to the shores of the crystal-clear mountain lake. Take a rowing boat along the picturesque shore. In summer, the Königssee invites you to take a refreshing dip in the cool water. For families, the campsites in Berchtesgadener Land offer a wide range of leisure activities, playgrounds and many exciting outdoor activities. The summer toboggan run on the Obersalzberg promises speedy descents. In the cold season, winter sports enthusiasts get their money's worth: the ski areas are easily accessible from Schönau and Ramsau. The longest ski area, with 11 kilometres of excellently groomed pistes, is located in the immediate vicinity of the Königssee.
The campsites in Berchtesgadener Land are excellently equipped. In addition to pitches for motorhomes, caravans and tents, there is often also rental accommodation and holiday flats for campers without motorhomes. Dogs are welcome guests on many pitches. We generally recommend booking all year round, as the pitches are also very popular in winter.
The beautifully situated Grafenlehen campsite north of Lake Königssee offers a perfect view of the Watzmann and Grünstein mountains. The site borders directly on the Königsseer Ache, where you can refresh yourself or go fishing in summer. The famous viewpoint at the "Malerwinkel" is just a short walk away and the campsite is the ideal starting point for many other hikes in the area. The Grafenlehen campsite has its own restaurant and there are other options within walking distance.
The Staufeneck campsite in Piding in Rupertiwinkel delights its guests with beautifully situated pitches right on the banks of the River Saalach. On the edge of a mountain slope, campers immediately have the feeling of being at home in nature. The dog-friendly site has a children's playground for the youngsters, a kiosk for shopping and spa facilities in the surrounding area. The Staufeneck campsite is highly regarded for its special atmosphere.
On the edge of the Berchtesgaden National Park, guests at the Allweglehen camping resort can enjoy a marvellous view of the mountain backdrop with the Watzmann massif. Not only the beautifully situated pitches, but also the extensive leisure and wellness facilities with sauna and outdoor pool ensure camping enjoyment. The Allweglehen camping resort is open all year round and is particularly popular with winter sports enthusiasts. They use the nearby ski areas in the Alps or set off on the region's cross-country ski trails
The tranquil and dog-friendly Simonhof campsite is located near Ramsau and delights visitors with its location in the middle of the mountain landscape. Nearby are the outdoor swimming pools in Bischofswiesen and Schönau am Königssee, the Watzmann-Therme, the Rupertustherme, the beautiful town of Bad Reichenhall and the Hochschwarzeck ski area. Campers like to head to the Simonhof campsite for these excursion tips.
The Berchtesgadener Land not only enchants with its beautiful nature and unique Alpine panoramas. The region is also home to numerous beautiful places where you can relax and unwind. The centre of the district is the Alpine town of Bad Reichenhall, which looks back on a long history and is known to many people primarily for its salt production. The small town of Schönau am Königssee is also beautiful and a perfect starting point for hikes in the Berchtesgaden National Park. The idyllic mountaineering village of Ramsau is a particular attraction for nature lovers.
The small town of Schönau is the perfect place to explore the area around Lake Königssee. Boat trips by electric boat to the picturesque St. Bartholomä chapel, behind which the impressive Watzmann east face rises 1,800 metres into the air, are particularly popular. The baroque chapel with its red onion domes is one of the most photographed motifs in Berchtesgaden. Daring guests can visit the nearby ice chapel - a natural cave in the deepest ice field in the German Alps. The next stop by boat is Salet. From there, a hiking trail leads to the idyllic Fischunkelalm and the Röthbach Falls - the highest waterfall in Germany at 470 metres. We also recommend a visit to the royal hunting lodge, which houses a typical Bavarian restaurant.
The Alpine town of Bad Reichenhall in the Saalachtal valley used to be an important centre for salt production. Today, this can be seen in the old salt works, which has been converted into a salt museum. The beautiful old town centre with its magnificent villas and the royal spa gardens in the heart of the town are also well worth a visit. The surrounding area also has a lot to offer: For example, a trip to Bad Reichenhall's local mountain, the Predigtstuhl, on the Predigtstuhlbahn cable car is very popular. This is the oldest cable car in the world still in its original condition. History buffs can visit the documentation centre on the Obersalzberg, which commemorates Berchtesgaden's darkest period during the Nazi era.
Nestled in the picturesque mountains of Berchtesgaden, Ramsau is one of the most beautiful places in the region. The village is officially known as the "mountaineering village", as many of the surrounding peaks were first climbed from here, including the Hochkalter and, of course, the famous Watzmann. But non-alpinists also get their money's worth in Ramsau: the neighbouring Magic Forest is a wild and romantic mountain forest and a popular excursion destination for families, while the romantic mountain lakes Hintersee and Taubensee invite you to spend relaxing hours by the water. Ramsau is a good starting point for numerous hikes, for example to the idyllic Wimbachtal valley or to the Blaueishütte hut at the foot of the Hochkalter, famous for its excellent cakes.
If you want to spend a little more time in beautiful Bavaria, you can then explore the region by motorhome. One wonderful route is the German Alpine Road, which leads to some of the most beautiful sights in southern Germany and offers magnificent Alpine panoramas throughout. Germany's oldest holiday road starts directly in Schönau and leads from there to the most popular places in Bavaria: Bernau am Chiemsee, Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Bad Tölz and the idyllic Nesselwang in the Allgäu. The tour ends in beautiful Lindau on Lake Constance, where you can relax for a few days. An absolute top tour and highly recommended!
