Excellent campsites offer the best opportunities to explore the beautiful landscape with its rolling hills in the Saxon border region with the Czech Republic. Lovers of scenic backdrops and beautiful hiking tours will get their money's worth with the numerous campsites in the Ore Mountains. The destination is also ideal for exciting excursions with your dog, as there are more than enough opportunities to let off steam in the varied surroundings.
The region in the Ore Mountains is not only suitable for campers who want to relax in the countryside, but also for holidaymakers with a passion for hiking in the low mountain range with moderate elevations. A large number of designated hiking trails allow for wonderful tours through the many forest areas of the Ore Mountains.
Some of the region's campsites are located directly next to bodies of water, such as the Greifensteine campsite by the Greifenbachstauweiher pond or the Mittweidaer Aue campsite by the Zschopau river. Forest lovers will also get their money's worth at forest campsites such as Waldcamping-Thalheim or Waldcamping Erzgebirgsblick, where they can enjoy the fresh air and the chirping of mating birds. Worthwhile destinations in the region are the Lindenau campsite, the Fichtelberghütte campsite near Oberwiesenthal and the Autocamp Osek. Visitors can decide for themselves whether they want to do this in a supervised setting or prefer total independence.
The nearest major cities to the Ore Mountains are Chemnitz, Dresden, Leipzig and Nuremberg. The district town of Annaberg-Buchholz is the unofficial capital of the Ore Mountains. Various routes lead there and the holiday begins with the departure in a motorhome or caravan.
It is 34 kilometres from Chemnitz to Annaberg-Buchholz in a southerly direction. On the B95, you pass through the picturesque communities of Burkhardtsdorf, Thum and Schönfeld, where it is always worth stopping for a tasty snack in between.
From Dresden, the B173 and B101 lead 95 kilometres into the heart of the Erzgebirge. You will pass through the picturesque town of Freiberg. On the 126 km journey from Leipzig, we recommend travelling along the A72 motorway past Borna and Chemnitz. The rural area with its wide open fields provides a foretaste of the destination region.
The journey from Nuremberg in Bavaria to Annaberg-Buchholz is best made on the A9 and A72 motorways. The journey stretches over 254 kilometres and takes you past the festival city of Bayreuth and the Saxon cities of Plauen and Zwickau. From Annaberg-Buchholz you can reach almost every campsite in the beautiful Ore Mountains.
The extremely picturesque landscapes of the Ore Mountains have some very special treasures from Mother Nature in store for visitors. Two particularly beautiful destinations are the Black Pockau Valley, also known as the Schwarzwassertal, and the village of Seiffen.
The Pockau meanders through the unspoilt valley between Kühnhaide and Pobershau. In the midst of spruce and fir trees, rugged rocks rise up to form majestic monuments and huge moss lichens cover the rounded stone blocks in the dark waters. You could be forgiven for thinking you were in the Swiss Alps. Kaffee-Kurt is at home in the Schwarzwassertal. The man sells coffee, biscuits and homemade cakes from his lovingly decorated stall and has long enjoyed cult status in the region. The Schwarzwassertal is truly a predestined destination for long hikes and sumptuous picnics in the great outdoors.
44 km east of Annaberg-Buchholz lies the pretty village, which is just a few kilometres from the Czech border. The pretty mountain church is a popular photo motif and landmark of Seiffen. It is a popular choice for wedding celebrations even abroad. There are several excellent hiking trails from Seiffen through the wild countryside. Rustic forest inns and authentic guesthouses spoil visitors with hearty, regional specialities.
The Ore Mountains are naturally an excellent destination for sporting activities due to the diversity of the landscape. Climbing and mountain biking are just two of the many outdoor activities on offer.
There are many fixed climbing routes in the Ore Mountains. One example is the imposing Teufelsstein massif in the Steinbachtal valley. The rocks have around 110 climbing routes that lead up to 34 metres. The difficulties are between II and VIII+ UIAA. Many other climbing areas such as the Kreuzfelsen, the Gamsfelsen, Seekofel, Kleiner Brocken and the Stülpnerwand are also recommended for climbing enthusiasts.
The Ore Mountains are also a very good choice for extended mountain bike tours over hill and dale or by e-bike along well-developed country lanes. The Stoneman Miriquidi Trail, for example, covers 162 km and a total of 4400 metres in altitude, passing scenic highlights along the way. Bikes and equipment can be hired in many towns, including Annaberg-Buchholz. The town is located directly on the Stoneman Miriquidi circular tour. Other recommended mountain bike trails are the Jens-Weißflog-Tour or from Annaberg-Buchholz to Weitersglashütte.
The region's long tradition of mining, forestry and craftsmanship has given rise to a wide variety of delicious, home-style cooking. The potato has always been a fixed star of the local gastronomy. This tough crop thrives in the often harsh climate of the Ore Mountains and is used in potato dishes such as fratzen, green dumplings and smokemaad.
A particular speciality is the dish of boiled potatoes, quark with linseed oil and blood and liver sausages. But the region also has a lot to offer when it comes to drinks. Alcoholic drinks such as Lauterbacher Tropfen, a schnapps, and Rechenberg beer stand out in particular. These specialities are insider tips and should not be missed when visiting the Ore Mountains.
The Ore Mountains generally have a temperate continental climate, which usually produces pleasantly warm summers. However, depending on the altitude, it can get harsh and really cold in winter due to subpolar influences. It is not without reason that the Ore Mountains are a popular winter destination for winter sports enthusiasts thanks to the often heavy snowfall. However, due to topographical conditions, the Czech side offers better opportunities for skiers and cross-country skiers and has numerous ski lifts and gondolas in the ski resorts. For campers, the best time to travel is between June and August to enjoy a variety of outdoor activities and make new friends. However, spring and autumn offer their own advantages. This is when the places clear out and you can enjoy the peace and quiet.
