Campsites in Lombardy

Camping holidays in northern Italy can be spent on wonderful sites that impress with their location and facilities. At most campsites, campers can choose between a comfortable pitch with electricity or a mobile home (bungalow) with a spacious bedroom. Those who want to spend the night in a different way can stay in a family tent when glamping. Such a rental tent is sure to bring back unforgettable memories of a wonderful camping holiday.

How to get there

Milan, the capital of Lombardy, is not that far away for many Germans. The distance between the German city of Munich and Lombardy is around 500 kilometres and can easily be covered in one day. The roads are well developed and signposted, although traffic jams can occur in the peak season, i.e. in the summer months of July and August. It should also be noted that a motorway tax sticker is required when driving through Austria or Switzerland.

From Munich, caravan owners and motorhome drivers take the route towards Innsbruck and drive on the A22 motorway via the Italian border, Bolzano and Trento to their destination in Lombardy. For all holidaymakers from south-west Germany, the quickest route is through Switzerland and the St. Gotthard Tunnel to Lombardy.

The route from Munich via the Brenner motorway in Austria is very popular due to the spectacular panorama, which makes the route particularly attractive. It winds its way through dreamy villages and Italian landscapes and guarantees a pleasant and relaxed journey, not least because of the reduced toll charges.

Destinations in Lombardy

Camping in Lombardy impresses with fantastic lake and mountain landscapes, exciting cities and a wealth of places worth discovering. Whether it's the vibrant cultural metropolis of Milan with its countless attractions or Lake Garda with its huge range of water sports: Lombardy is always an experience!

Milan

Milan is a lively Italian metropolis and also forms the centre of Lombardy. Centuries of art and cultural history are combined here. Milan is also internationally regarded as the capital of fashion and design, which is confirmed by the numerous shopping streets and shopping centres. Large fashion chains, luxury shops and boutiques as well as upscale restaurants and small cafés invite you to stroll and linger. Culture enthusiasts will find world-famous sights here, such as Milan Cathedral, which was once built in the Gothic style, or the Teatro alla Scala, one of the most important opera houses in the world.

Lake Garda

Lake Garda is one of the northern Italian lakes and is also considered the largest lake in Italy. With its azure waters, lush Mediterranean vegetation and alpine mountain backdrop, it attracts numerous visitors year after year and is one of the most popular destinations for campers in this region.

Guests can look forward to a wide-ranging water sports programme, from windsurfing and diving to jet skiing and canoeing. Bathing holidays by the lake and active holidays in the mountains can be easily combined in Lombardy.

Brescia

Brescia is an interesting holiday destination for campers in northern Italy. The former monastery of Santa Giulia with the museum of the same name, in which Roman bronze statues and medieval frescoes can be admired, is a sight for history lovers. They could also opt for Brescia Castle on the Cidneo hill, which offers valuable insights into Brescia's past with its fortified walls, drawbridge and museum.

Activities and excursions

Lombardy impresses with its varied terrain and stunning nature - a paradise for active holidaymakers with numerous exciting sports and leisure activities for the whole family.

Cycling and hiking

The mountains in Lombardy invite you to climb the Adamello or other peaks. Trekking and mountain bike tours are also popular activities for exploring the valleys and the rest of the region. After an eventful excursion by bike or on foot, the Lombardy hills offer thermal baths that provide peace and relaxation after sport.

Excursion to the Sacri Monti

The Sacri Monti, the Sacred Mountains with a total of nine extensive chapels and other pilgrimage sites, are also among the most popular excursion destinations in the surrounding area. Two of these Sacred Mountains, the Sacro Monte di Ossuccio and the Sacro Monte di Varese, are located in Lombardy. These historic sites, which have been recognised as UNESCO World Heritage Sites, were built on mountains and lakes in the 16th and 17th centuries.

The Sacri Monti tell the story of Christ and are home to magnificent works of art, paintings and sculptures. People have been coming to the pilgrimage sites for centuries in search of comfort and help.

Gastronomy

The cuisine of Lombardy is considered to be varied and typically Mediterranean. Guests here can enjoy numerous delicious delicacies that are characteristic of Italy, but also, for example, unusual molecular cuisine. Culinary specialities in Lombardy range from delicious risotto with saffron and egg soup from Pavia to the famous Milanese schnitzel, which is an absolute must. Of course, different types of pasta, such as the buckwheat pasta pizzoccheri, are also always on the menu. Lombard cuisine is rounded off by sinfully good cheeses: cheese lovers particularly appreciate the classic Gorgonzola, mascarpone for sweet desserts and the famous Grana Padano, which is a must for any pasta dish.

Best time to visit

The temperate continental climate in Lombardy ensures hot, dry summers and mild winters. Due to the diverse landscapes, the weather can vary considerably: While the Po Valley, for example, is one of the warmest regions in Italy, the mountains even have an alpine climate.

The summer months of July and August are ideal for a relaxing lakeside holiday with the whole family, as this is when it is at its hottest with temperatures of up to 30 degrees Celsius. The cool, deep blue waters of the lakes promise a refreshing cool-down.

Active holidaymakers and culture lovers prefer the months of April, May, September and October to marvel at the numerous sights or take advantage of the tempting range of sports on offer in milder temperatures.
