The canton of Graubünden in south-east Switzerland is home to some of the highest mountains in the small Alpine republic. National and nature parks such as Beverin and Ela can be visited, especially in the centre of the region. Hikers get their money's worth when camping in Graubünden, as do cyclists and fans of clear mountain waters. Visiting secluded villages at higher altitudes is particularly appealing.
A trip by motorhome to one of the campsites in Graubünden takes holidaymakers to the south-east of Switzerland and far up into the mountain landscapes of the Alps. Between the peaks of Piz Vadret, Scima da Saoseo and the Lenzerhorn, there is plenty to explore in the canton.
You can reach unique viewpoints by car and also use them as starting points for hikes. Popular places to stay overnight include Lake Sils and Lake Silvaplana. Popular excursion activities include a trip on the Rhaeto-Romanic Railway over the Bernina Pass or a visit to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Val Müstair Monastery.
During a trip, you can get to know Swiss culture in German, Romansh and Italian as well as nature. The best-known holiday destinations include St. Moritz, Davos and the capital Chur.
Graubünden is located between Central Switzerland and Austria and can be reached via various routes. Travellers from Germany travel via Bavaria or Baden-Württemberg. If you choose the Bavarian route, you can travel via Tyrol and drive through the Austrian state to the south-west. The Swiss canton of Graubünden joins the motorway there.
However, in view of the toll charges in Austria, many motorhome holidaymakers take the route via Lake Constance. At Lindau, there is a short section through the Austrian Vorarlberg until you reach the Swiss A13 motorway. This motorway leads past Liechtenstein directly to Chur in Graubünden. It is around 100 kilometres from Lake Constance to the regional capital.
If you are travelling from the Stuttgart area and western Germany, first drive to the western shore of Lake Constance or along the Rhine to Basel. Then take the A3 motorway at Zurich, which continues east to Bad Ragaz. From there it is not far to your destination.
All motorways and dual carriageways with green and white signs are subject to tolls in Switzerland. A vignette is required to use the motorway. Additional charges apply to some bridges and tunnels.
In Graubünden, destinations in the mountains such as St. Moritz, Davos and Samnaun are particularly worthwhile.
The holiday resort is primarily known to winter sports enthusiasts. But even in the warmer months, there is plenty to discover in the spa town on Lake St. Moritz between the Corviglia and Piz Nair mountains. Those who like to be active can go hiking around the mountain waters and climb one of the surrounding peaks. The healing springs of St. Moritz are world-famous and are used for wellness treatments in the town's thermal baths.
In spring, summer and autumn, the rich, green landscapes of the Landwasser Valley are one of the most beautiful excursion destinations in Graubünden. The main town in the region is Davos - a popular holiday destination all year round. Impressive mountain peaks such as the Chüpfenflue, the Schiahorn and the Amselflue rise above the municipality. These peaks are more than 2,500 metres high. Some mountains even reach more than 3,000 metres into the sky.
Samnaun is located in the north-east of Graubünden on the border with Austria. The valley community fascinates with picturesque alpine pastures and rustic mountain inns. Cable cars take you up to mountain peaks over 2,500 metres high. The Samnaun road is a beautiful excursion route. Samnaun is famous not least for its many customs and traditions, such as the pear bread feast in December.
Graubünden is a paradise for active holidaymakers. From mountain biking and cycling to hiking and sailing, the canton has plenty to offer.
Hiking is of course the first activity on a camping holiday in Graubünden. Holidaymakers can expect breathtaking Alpine landscapes. The lush valleys and lush green mountain pastures are best explored on foot. The Graubünden cable cars can be used for the ascent.
On the mountain lakes in Graubünden you can enjoy various sports in summer and cut the waves in a sailing boat or canoe. On some lakes it is even possible to go kitesurfing or surfing. Families like to hire pedalos and enjoy the peace and quiet on the water. In warm temperatures in July and August, a refreshing dip is also tempting.
The mountain bike trails at high altitudes are an absolute highlight for leisure-oriented travellers. The altitude profile is somewhat flatter if you follow the rivers and valleys. The Davos valley tour into the Flüela valley is particularly recommended. This route is ideal for families thanks to its gentle climbs and wide paths. The cycle path leads through the narrow, impressive Zügen Gorge and rewards you with fantastic views.
Graubünden cuisine is the culinary flagship of the whole of Eastern Switzerland. One of the specialities is Bündnerfleisch, which is air-dried high up in the mountains. Free of tendons and fat, the meat is pleasantly lean and goes wonderfully with crispy farmhouse bread. The slices of bread are also delicious with salami-like salsi or mountain cheese.
As a starter, people in Graubünden order the hearty barley soup, which can be followed by capuns, chard wraps with a sauce of mountain cheese and bouillon. Another classic dish is Swiss spaetzle, which is called pizokel in Graubünden and is usually served with cabbage. For dessert, treat yourself to the Bündner nut cake made from shortcrust pastry.
