Camping on the Zugspitze offers active holidaymakers and nature lovers perfect access to the fantastic mountain world of the Bavarian Alps. There is a dense network of hiking trails around Germany's highest mountain, which open up the mountain peaks of the Wetterstein mountains, Karwendel and the Ammergau Alps. A number of picturesque Alpine lakes, including the beautiful Eibsee with its turquoise-coloured water, promise a Caribbean feeling in your own country.
The Zugspitze region is one of the most popular holiday destinations in the Bavarian Alps for campers. Active holidaymakers in particular get their money's worth in the region between the Blue Land, Garmisch-Partenkirchen and the Wetterstein mountains. Countless hiking trails lead up to the surrounding peaks and to natural wonders such as Höllentalklamm and Partnachklamm gorges. As the paths are well maintained, they are also ideal for campers on holiday with their dogs. Of course, campers with alpine ambitions will not miss out on the many climbing routes, but the fantastic scenic backdrop with the mighty mountain ranges of the Eastern Alps, dense forests and crystal-clear mountain lakes also make the Zugspitze region a great holiday destination for campers who want to spend a relaxing holiday. Beautiful lakes such as the Eibsee, Staffelsee or Riegsee are popular excursion destinations for families with children. The friendly little towns such as Oberammergau, Mittenwald, Ehrwald and Garmisch-Partenkirchen also have plenty to offer culturally.
The campsites in the region are generally excellently equipped. In addition to classic tent pitches, there are idyllic pitches with and without parcelling as well as rental accommodation, bungalows or mobile homes. Luxury lodges with special comfort areas provide that little bit extra. Winter camping on the Zugspitze promises an extraordinary experience in the cold season.
This fantastic campsite is located directly on the road to Grainau and within walking distance of the Zugspitze cable car. The extensive meadow area offers plenty of open space and wonderful views of the peaks of the Wetterstein mountain range. The site is the ideal starting point for hikes and cycle tours. Dogs are welcome on the site and can stay overnight at no extra charge.
The popular Dr Lauth campsite is located in Ehrwald on the Tyrolean side of the Zugspitze. The meadow-like site offers beautiful pitches on grass. A hiking trail leads across the site, inviting you to explore the beautiful surroundings. The Ehrwalder Wetterstein cable car, which leads directly to the Tiroler Zugspitzarena hiking area, is also located nearby.
The wonderful Zugspitz Resort is also close to Ehrwald. The location alone in the valley framed by mighty, wooded mountain basins makes this place the first choice for lovers of marvellous mountain panoramas. The proximity to the Tiroler Zugspitzbahn is also favourable. From here, you can take the cable car directly to the summit of the Zugspitze.
The Bavarian Alps don't just offer great scenery. The numerous pretty villages, which blend harmoniously into the mountain landscape, also make the Zugspitze region a popular destination for a camping holiday. The picturesque climatic health resort of Mittenwald is an ideal starting point for exploring the region. No less attractive is Oberammergau, which is particularly famous for its Passion Play. And for those who like to spend their holidays by the lake, Seehausen am Staffelsee is one of the most beautiful places in Bavaria.
Nestled between the Wetterstein mountains, Karwendel and Kranzberg lies the beautiful climatic health resort of Mittenwald. In the past, the town with its colourful houses was primarily known for its violin making. Today, the violin-making museum offers an insight into the old traditions. The historic town centre at Obermarkt with its richly decorated church and many pretty little shops and cafés is also very beautiful. Nearby, the impressive Leutascher Geisterklamm gorge is a great destination for a family excursion.
The municipality of Oberammergau is located just north of Garmisch-Partenkirchen in the Ammergau Alps Nature Park. The popular holiday destination is famous for its annual Passion Play and the colourfully painted facades of the houses, known as "Lüftlmalerei". Also worth a visit is the Oberammergau Museum, where artistic wood carvings by artists from the region are exhibited. The two mountain peaks Kofel and Laber are ideal for leisurely hikes in the immediate vicinity of the village.
Seehausen am Staffelsee is not only one of the most beautiful places in the Blue Land, but in the whole of Bavaria. The picturesque old fishing village is idyllically nestled in the lake and moorland landscape of the Alpine foothills and is now one of the most popular holiday resorts in Upper Bavaria. The small town is characterised by old farmhouses decorated with Lüftlmalerei paintings. The highlight, however, is the marvellous landscape around the Staffelsee. The Murnauer Moos, the seven islands of the Staffelsee and the Loisach Valley are some of the most beautiful excursion destinations in the area.
If you have time, you can reach the Zugspitze on foot - even without mountaineering experience or climbing on the dizzyingly steep Jubiläumsgrat ridge. A beautiful, easy hiking trail leads over 20 km and almost 2000 metres in altitude, first through the impressive Partnachklamm gorge and then through the unspoilt Reintal valley to Germany's highest mountain. There are several huts along the way where you can spend the night. The tour is therefore best split over 2 days.
