As the largest steppe lake in Central Europe, Lake Balaton offers the best conditions for camping. PiNCAMP presents the best campsites on Lake Balaton and provides you with all the important information for your camping holiday in Hungary.
Lake Balaton, or Lake Balaton, is located in the west of Hungary and is one of the largest lakes in Europe with a length of almost 80 kilometres. It has always been a paradise for camping and swimming fans.
There are numerous campsites for every taste on the shores of the lake. In addition to pitches for motorhomes, tents and caravans, mobile homes and bungalows are usually also available to rent. The pitches are usually well equipped and have electricity and water connections. An entertainment programme is usually only offered in the summer months during the high season.
The sports programme is particularly varied. The lake offers the opportunity for windsurfing, sailing or kayaking. You can also go fishing at designated spots. There are also mini-golf, horse riding and tennis facilities close to some of the sites. Pets such as dogs are generally allowed.
The shallow waters are also ideal for swimming with children. In some places they can walk several hundred metres into Lake Balaton and splash around - other places are suitable for swimming. Many campsites on Lake Balaton pamper their guests with their own wellness facilities such as a sauna or swimming pool.
Lake Balaton is a popular holiday destination: every year, numerous guests from home and abroad come to the region to enjoy their holidays in spa and holiday resorts such as Siófok, Balatonfüred, Kezthely and on the Tihany peninsula. The attraction lies in the combination of relaxation and leisure activities. If you feel like it, you can go surfing, kitesurfing and sailing on the "Hungarian Sea". Pure wellness, on the other hand, is on offer in the thermal baths, where guests are pampered with oriental massages and steam baths.
A number of spas and holiday resorts around Lake Balaton provide relaxing breaks during camping holidays. Siófok, for example, presents itself as a cool party town for young people and young-at-heart campers, while Balatonfüred is more of a cosy spa town for relaxing and unwinding.
Siófok is by far the most popular seaside resort on Lake Balaton. Camping, games, sport and partying go hand in hand in this small town. Life is particularly lively in Siófok in summer - local operators offer activities such as windsurfing and sailing. Clubs guarantee a good atmosphere with their beach parties from June to August. Things are a little quieter on the edge of the main beach.
In Zamárdi on the southern shore, things are a little more relaxed compared to nearby Siófok. Visitors can only expect a large music festival, the Balaton Sound, at the height of summer. Apart from that, the municipality with its campsites is ideal for couples and families on holiday. The proximity to the ferry that takes visitors from Szántód to Tihany is practical.
Thanks to its mineral spring and excellent climate, Balatonfüred has been awarded the honour of a health resort. The many wellness offers are remarkable, ranging from therapeutic baths to massages and Ayurvedic medicine. Nearby, the Tihany peninsula with its monastery is an interesting destination for hikers and day trippers.
When travelling to one of the campsites on Lake Balaton, you usually have to drive right across Austria. If you are travelling from southern or western Germany, take the route via Salzburg and continue from there towards Vienna. Shortly after the capital of the Alpine country, you will cross the border into Hungary in Burgenland.
A short stopover at Lake Neusiedl is recommended here. To reach Lake Neusiedl, take the Hungarian M15 motorway to Györ and turn south towards Székesfehérvár shortly after the small town. The municipality is only 50 kilometres from Balatonvilágos and Siófok.
From Munich, it is about 700 kilometres to the destination. Travellers starting from Frankfurt am Main should expect to travel just under 1,000 km. In Berlin, around 900 km separate holidaymakers from Lake Balaton. From the city on the Spree and from the whole of eastern Germany, it makes sense to travel via the Czech Republic and Slovakia, especially as the toll charges here are lower than in Austria.
No holiday in Hungary is complete without a visit to a traditional Csárdás bar. Lively violin music is played in the evenings in the original country inns. It forms the backdrop for a festive meal, which usually consists of savoury dishes. The classic dish of Hungarian cuisine is of course goulash, although the stew version is known as pörkelt.
If you order goulash in Hungary, however, you get a kind of soup. Both versions are characterised by the fiery paprika spice that has become Hungary's trademark. The hot pepper is also used in many other specialities such as smoked salami and Halászlé fish soup. The latter is of course prepared with fresh lake fish at Lake Balaton.
Below we present 5 campsites by Lake Balaton that we particularly like. These campsites are characterised by a beautiful location, good service and excellent value for money.
Beautiful campsite with over 200 pitches in a shady location directly on the shores of Lake Balaton. Mobile homes are also available for hire. It can get quite noisy in summer as anglers often gather on the nearby beach.
Campsite in the centre of Balatonakali right next to a public beach. The sanitary facilities are a little dated but still adequate. There is a children's playground, trampoline, table tennis tables and a streetball court.
Holiday village in a very beautiful location that invites you to swim in the lake. The parcelled pitches are either in the sun or shade, and children can let off steam on the giant slide on the sandy beach. An entertainment programme and numerous leisure and sports activities provide plenty of variety.
A lovely little campsite with a cosy atmosphere. The beach is about 5 minutes away, restaurants, pubs and shops are also within walking distance. The sanitary facilities are very clean.
Quite a large campsite with well-kept pitches, which is well suited for a short stay. In addition to the somewhat small pitches, bungalows and mobile homes are also available for hire. The leisure facilities are only fully available in the high season.
The season for beach holidays and camping at Lake Balaton begins in June and lasts well into September. Temperatures rise to over 20 degrees Celsius as early as the end of May - the water is then around 19 degrees Celsius. June is significantly warmer with 25 degrees Celsius in the air and 22 degrees Celsius in the water.
In June and August, the 25 degree Celsius mark is broken and the temperatures in Lake Balaton are then just below this. Outside of this period, it gets noticeably cooler - in winter, the mercury can even drop below freezing at night.
In summer, Lake Balaton is a real leisure oasis where you can splash around and swim in the water. Many holidaymakers enjoy sports such as sailing or surfing. Cycling trips around the lake are also worthwhile endeavours.
In Hungary, Lake Balaton is the most important centre for sailing. There are marinas and yacht harbours almost everywhere on the shore where you can book courses and hire boats. The atmosphere on the lake is pleasant because there is a categorical ban on combustion engines on Lake Balaton.
With wind forces of up to four, Lake Balaton is perfect for surfing. From May to October, advanced surfers and beginners take to the water on the south and north shores and let the stable breezes carry them over the waves. Surf schools are open, especially in the summer months.
The banks of the Balaton are around 200 kilometres long and are best explored by bike. Since 2004 there has been a cycle path that runs all the way around Lake Balaton with many rest stops.
In the summer months, the municipalities and health resorts around Lake Balaton organise countless events with live concerts, pageants, historical parades and regattas.
