And thanks to the dog-friendly campsites, Limburg is also a real insider tip for animal lovers.

Camping in Limburg: all important information at a glance

The Dutch province of Limburg is a multifaceted holiday destination. Some campsites are located directly on the banks of the Meuse. They are particularly popular with water sports enthusiasts and active holidaymakers who want to hire canoes, fish in the fishing grounds and go on cycle tours on the well-developed river cycle path. Families and water lovers also like to opt for the campsites in the north of Limburg, where there are numerous bathing lakes. Popular is the cosy recreation park De Schatberg, which is located directly on a lake and is a true bathing paradise with a water slide and a large leisure programme. Campers who want to combine their camping holiday in the fresh air with an extended sightseeing tour are best advised to book at a campsite near the major cities. From the tent and caravan site near Maastricht, for example, you can visit one of the famous museums. The campsites near Heerlen in the south-east are also popular with culture and art lovers.

Camping with a dog in Limburg

Limburg is ideal for a camping holiday with your four-legged friend. Dogs are allowed on most campsites, and many campsites also offer special facilities for dogs, such as dog showers, dog stations and exercise areas. The beautiful landscape with its green hills is also perfect for walking your dog.

How to get to Limburg

Travelling to Limburg by motorhome is straightforward. From both Munich and Berlin, the distance to Limburg's capital Maastricht is around 670 kilometres. Holidaymakers leave the Berlin capital on the Berliner Ring and turn onto the A2 at the Werder junction.

Numerous service stations on the well-developed main route invite you to take a break. The Auetal Nord service area is one of the places to stop after 330 kilometres. At the Kaiserberg junction near Duisburg, drivers turn onto the A40 motorway heading west. From here, it is around 45 kilometres to the Dutch border. The first Limburg city, Venlo, awaits just behind the motorway.

The journey to the Dutch holiday region is also easy from the south of Germany thanks to the continuous motorway network. Initially, motorists follow the A9 northwards until the A3 branches off to Frankfurt at Nuremberg. After the metropolis on the Main, the route continues on this motorway. Only at Cologne do you change direction onto the A4 motorway. The last major city on German soil is Aachen, which is only 40 kilometres from Maastricht.

The most beautiful camping destinations in Limburg

Limburg offers numerous attractions and a beautiful landscape. There is plenty to see in both the capital city of Maastricht and the former mining town of Heerlen. Culture lovers can combine a carefree holiday in the fresh air with sightseeing tours through Maastricht or the other attractive cities in the region.

Maastricht

Maastricht is known as the cultural centre of the province of Limburg. An incredible 1,600 historic buildings are listed in this fascinating city. The impressive religious buildings include the three-nave Servatius Basilica with two high towers. The oldest church in the Netherlands houses the treasury, where the ornate shrine of St Servaas is an example of Maastricht goldsmithing.

Maastricht is also known for its colourful museum landscape: the Bonnefantenmuseum is located in a building designed by Aldo Rossi and exhibits works by Peter Baul Rubens, medieval wooden sculptures and contemporary art in the style of minimalism. A tour of the Maastricht Underground is a fascinating experience. The underground network of paths under the Sint Pieterberg plateau covers around 80 kilometres.

Heerlen

Heerlen in south-east Limburg invites you on an exciting journey back in time. The Thermenmuseum tells of the early settlement of the region. Here you can see the remains of an impressive Roman bathhouse that was built around 2,000 years ago. Also worth a visit is the Mining Museum, which provides fascinating insights into the time when coal was still mined in Heerlen.

A tour of the impressive Hoensbroek moated castle is also well worth a visit. In the mighty complex, 40 exhibition rooms and life-size figures provide a perfect insight into life at court. The dungeon, on the other hand, has a creepy atmosphere.

Heeren is also famous for its multifaceted street art scene. Dozens of colourful works by local and international painters adorn the cityscape. A guided tour provides interesting background information.

The border triangle in Vaals

Belgium, Germany and the Netherlands meet at the border triangle in Vaals. The 323 metre high Vaalserberg is one of the highest mountains in the Netherlands. The labyrinth on the Vaalserberg is particularly exciting for children, and the wooded surroundings also invite you to go for walks in the most beautiful natural surroundings.

Activities and excursions in Limburg

Perfectly developed cycle and hiking trails lead to exciting hikes in the national parks or along the babbling Meuse. The numerous theme parks and amusement parks offer fun for the whole family. So there's always plenty of variety when camping in Limburg!

Discover Limburg by bike and on foot

The Netherlands is known far beyond its borders as an Eldorado for cyclists. Limburg also boasts a well-developed network of paths, although it is not quite as flat as the rest of the Netherlands thanks to the many hills.

The 178 km long Maasradroute, which follows the river of the same name for long stretches from Maastricht to Plasmolen, is particularly attractive. The practical bicycle shuttle boats are ideal for a leisurely return to the starting point.

Active holidaymakers will find interesting hiking trails in De Maasduinen National Park in the north of Limburg. In Holland's longest inland dune belt, you can hike through heathland, moors and past many grazing flocks of sheep. Another hiking paradise, especially in spring, are the picturesque river valleys of the Leudal nature reserve.

Exciting excursions with children

Exciting attractions for children make Limburg the perfect destination for a family holiday. The GaiaZoo in Kerkrade is one of the most beautiful animal parks in the country. Its extraordinary inhabitants include wolverines, colourful sun parakeets and fluffy woolly monkeys.

The indoor DinoDome themed playground with climbing frames and ball pool offers plenty of opportunities to let off steam. The versatile Mondo Verde theme park in Landgraaf also guarantees hours of entertainment. Highlights include the lovingly designed parks with plants from the tropics, China and Australia.

Valkenburg Fairytale Forest

One of the most beautiful excursion destinations for families is located in Valkenburg. The Sprookjesbos fairytale forest brings well-known characters such as Sleeping Beauty and Snow White to life and also offers numerous play options, such as a large water playground. And while you're in Valkenburg, you should also visit the Roman catacombs located beneath the city.

Gastronomy

The gently rolling hills of Limburg are characterised by numerous vineyards. As a result, grape varieties such as Müller-Thurgau, Riesling and Pinot Noir thrive in this sunny Dutch region, which is also a centre of Dutch beer brewing. In addition to numerous breweries, the Brandt brewery in Wijlre is one of the oldest breweries in the country, where speciality beers such as Brand Imperator or Brand Up and Pils are still produced.

The regional drinks go perfectly with game dishes such as rabbit in sour sauce, which can be found on many menus. The multi-award-winning blue cheese Achelse Blauwe, which lends a spicy flavour to pear chutney, for example, also tastes excellent. Lovers of desserts will be spoilt with the Vlaai fruit cake. This sweet delicacy consists of a yeast dough base and fruit compote made from cherries, apples, plums or pears.

Weather and best time to go camping in Limburg

Limburg is one of the warmest regions in the Netherlands. However, the climate is largely similar to the weather in Germany. The months from June to September are the warmest. This is the most popular time to visit and also the peak season, with maximum average temperatures rising to 13 degrees Celsius from April. The weather is then perfect for excursions until October, with five to six hours of sunshine a day from May to August.

If you are planning a holiday for swimming or water sports on the Meuse lakes, July and August are the best months to visit. Then even hot days with temperatures of more than 30 degrees Celsius are possible.

However, visitors should be prepared for rain showers at any time of year, as rainfall can be expected on 9 to 13 days a month. On average, July is the wettest month with 75 litres of rain per square metre.
