With its idyllic landscapes, the Emsland is ideal for nature camping: moors, heathland and forests stretch as far as the eye can see. The flat plains run along the Dutch border, from Papenburg via Meppen and Lingen to just before Rheine. The towns and their surroundings are ideal for city camping and offer visitors many sights and cultural attractions. The campsites in Emsland are the perfect address for those seeking relaxation and sporting activities. Examples include Emsland Camping on the outskirts of Fehndorf with accommodation in Swedish houses, Camping Emspark near Meppen, the Lathener Marsch campsite and Hümmerlinger Land.

Special features of camping in Emsland

Emsland has more than 30 campsites spread throughout the district. Most of them are picturesquely situated on the banks of the rivers Hase, Mittelweser and Ems or on one of the lakes. Wonderful motorhome pitches along the river with electricity, modern mobile homes and sanitary facilities with toilets and showers as well as a bread roll service and bike hire are a matter of course at most campsites.

Whether travelling with friends, as a couple, with the whole family or with your dog - everyone can enjoy the idyllic natural surroundings here. Active holidaymakers in particular have discovered the well-developed cycling and hiking trails. The Hünenweg, for example, is one of the most popular routes. If you are travelling without your own bike, you will find a hire station at some campsites in Emsland.

Campsites in Emsland

The selection of excellent campsites in Emsland is diverse. Guests can opt for a pitch on the banks of the rivers or a bathing lake. While the barges chug down the Mittelweser or Ems, campers can enjoy the unique ambience of the region in northern Germany.

Lathener Marsch campsite

The family-run Lathener Marsch campsite in the state of Lower Saxony offers its guests parcelled and unparcelled pitches. The mobile homes for up to six people with a kitchenette, TV corner, bedroom and bathroom with WC and shower are also popular. Close to the River Ems, campers can enjoy the beautiful natural landscape of the Lathen marshes and set off on exploratory tours of the surrounding countryside.

Emsland Camp

The Emsland Camp on the outskirts of Fehndorf near the Dutch border has large motorhome pitches surrounded by nature. A highlight are the mobile homes on the site, which are designed like Swedish houses and exude a corresponding atmosphere.

Camping Hümmerlinger Land

Camping Hümmerlinger Land is a very tranquil site. Most of the mobile home pitches on the site are parcelled out, only very few are unparcelled. Campers praise the bread roll service, the clean sanitary facilities with showers and toilets and the very friendly operators. A holiday here always elicits a positive response, as the campsite receives five stars in the ratings.

If you are not enthusiastic about the Lathener Marsch campsite, the Emsland Camp with its Swedish houses or the Hümmerlinger Land campsite, you could consider the Blankes Glück campsite in Emstal or the Eden camping park near the town of Heede.

Getting there

Travellers appreciate the convenient journey to their holiday destination, as all camping parks are well connected to the German road network. Emsland is located in Lower Saxony, in the north-west of Germany. The region borders North Rhine-Westphalia to the south and the Netherlands to the west.

Emsland has a north-south extension of around 100 kilometres. The most important motorway is the A31. It starts in the Ruhr area and runs from the Bottrop junction directly through Emsland. It then ends at Emden in East Frisia. On its section within the holiday region, the service stations near Lingen and Rhede on the A31 motorway invite you to take a break.

An alternative to the A31, especially for drivers coming from the west or south of Germany, is the A1 motorway. From the Münsterland motorway service area near Münster, it is just under 60 km to the southern part of Emsland. Campers from eastern Germany first follow the A2 motorway in the direction of Hanover, then the A30 to Osnabrück and from there the A1 and the B402 federal road. For those coming from the north, the A1 motorway to Ahlhorner Heide and the B213 is the quickest route.

Destinations in Emsland

The Emsland promises a varied holiday with its landscapes and cultural treasures. Cyclists will find perfect conditions. A network of 3,500 kilometres of cycle paths and 60 tours take you to nature parks, historical sights and charming towns.

Papenburg

The many canals have given the town on the River Ems the illustrious nickname Venice of the North. Once built to transport peat, they now serve as an idyllic recreational area. Water still plays an important role in Papenburg today: the Meyer Werft shipyard builds elegant ocean liners, the production site of which can be explored on a guided tour. The launching of a cruise ship is also one of the most impressive experiences.

Lingen

It is not only the largest town in Emsland, but also a true shopping paradise with its shopping streets around the market square. Particularly worth seeing is the house at Am Markt 20, where a bronze plaque commemorates the famous German actor Theo Lingen. If you want to find out more about the history of the town, take a tour of the Emsland Museum. Golf enthusiasts can meet up on the 18-hole course at Golfclub Emstal e.V.

Haselünne

Haselünne is a state-recognised resort and at the same time the epitome of North German cosiness. Here, flat meadows and moors alternate with expansive fields and sparse beech forests. The Haselünner Kuhweide, a nature park with the largest juniper grove in north-west Germany, is definitely worth a visit. Amateur captains and canoeists, on the other hand, follow the course of the River Hase.

Activities and excursions

The best way to experience unspoilt nature is by cycling, hiking or canoeing on the Ems and Hase rivers. Culture lovers can take a tour of the many sights.

Cycling

The Emsland is a paradise for pleasure cyclists: a network of paths without gradients and 45 excellently signposted routes with a maximum of 75 km per tour characterise this holiday idyll. Rides along the River Ems and to the seaport in Papenburg are particularly popular.

On foot

The rural surroundings, with their historic farms and mills, are ideal for exciting cycle tours and long walks. On various themed routes and adventure trails, active travellers can learn lots of interesting facts about the local nature, for example about the peatlands and the life of the moorland farmers.

For children

Whether it's football golf in Lünne, climbing in the Surwold forest park or 3D mini golf in Lingen - there is the perfect leisure activity for young campers in Emsland, whatever the weather. What's more, the excursion boats from Lingen and Haren and the museum railway in Löningen take their passengers on a leisurely trip.

Worth seeing

The imposing Meyer Werft shipyard in Papenburg is the most popular excursion destination in Emsland and is also one of the most gigantic dry docks in the world. No less impressive are the distillery museum in Haselünne, the excavator park in Haren and the Batakhaus in Werpeloh.

Gastronomy

The regional cuisine in Emsland is down-to-earth and hearty. Green cabbage with potatoes and spelt is just as much a classic as freshly cut asparagus or bockwurst sausages with potato salad. Buckwheat pancakes are also a popular main course in north-west Germany, especially when topped with apple sauce or honey. Another Lower Saxon speciality is mockturtle. The spicy meat soup is traditionally eaten with a slice of toast. Wedding soup with chicken and beef garnishes and onion soup are among the top specialities. But fish lovers also get a taste for it in Emsland, for example pike-perch fillet with butter sauce and boiled potatoes. This is accompanied by a beer and topped off with a Haselünner Korn.

Best time to travel

The perfect travel time for a camping holiday varies according to personal preference. Because as varied as the landscape is, the weather is just as varied. Those looking for outdoor swimming fun on warm days should visit the outdoor pools or Denkern Lake in July and August. During this time, the thermometer consistently reads 22° Celsius, sometimes even higher.

Travellers who want to combine camping in Emsland with hiking or cycling tours are also recommended to enjoy the mild temperatures in the early and late summer. The pleasant temperatures of 18° to 20° Celsius in May, June and September make exploratory tours or sporting activities particularly enjoyable.
