Camping on the picturesque Ahr in the southern Rhineland means a holiday in one of Germany's most beautiful river valleys. The river meanders through Rhineland-Palatinate and North Rhine-Westphalia, passing through a wildly romantic landscape of enchanting vineyards, rugged rock formations and medieval hilltop castles. Hikers, water sports enthusiasts and rowers will find their paradise here, as will those seeking relaxation and gourmets.
In the idyllic riverside setting of the Ahr Valley, campers can enjoy a beautiful natural backdrop, well-equipped campsites and a wide range of leisure activities. The tranquil ambience and picturesque river bends make the 85 km long tributary of the Rhine a popular retreat for city dwellers in the west of Germany. The Ahr also attracts many holidaymakers looking to camp.
Located just outside Bonn, a short drive from Cologne or Bonn is all it takes to reach the Ahr. The campsites are usually located directly on the banks of the Ahr and combine a beautiful location between vineyards, floodplains and forests with good connections to the neighbouring towns of Ahrbrück, Dernau, Altenahr or Schuld. In addition to pitches for motorhomes and caravans, the campsites often also offer rental accommodation, holiday flats or mobile homes and are aimed at both short-term and long-term campers. Four-legged friends are welcome at many campsites along the Ahr and the region is perfect for camping with dogs.
From the well-equipped pitches, campers can explore the surrounding area directly on one of the cycle paths along the banks or hike through the tranquil vineyards. Mineral-rich springs bubble up from the volcanic ground, whose water is bottled or used for wellness treatments in the spa. The most famous spa resort on the Ahr is Bad Neuenahr-Ahrweiler.
As a popular holiday region, the Ahr Valley offers a whole range of beautiful campsites. These 5 campsites on the Ahr promise a very special camping experience.
Quiet and cosy campsite away from the main road on the outskirts of Mayschoß with wonderful views of the vineyards and surrounding forests of the Ahr Valley. In addition to the pitches, there are also caravans for hire, and the site is particularly motorbike-friendly and has its own motorbike parking spaces. Shopping facilities and restaurants are within walking distance in Mayschoß.
This relatively small site in Dernau offers around 30 pitches for motorhomes, caravans and tents and is considered an insider tip by long-time visitors to the Ahr Valley. On the shady and tree-lined site directly on the Ahr, you will find a cool pitch even in summer, with restaurants, a supermarket and bakery just a short walk away. The site is particularly popular with cyclists, as the well-known Ahr cycle path runs right past the site.
The "most motorbike-friendly campsite on the Ahr" is particularly popular with bikers. However, motorhome owners or campers with tents or caravans will also find a nice spot on the spacious meadow area with free choice of pitches. The campsite is a good starting point for culinary tours in the surrounding area: the wine villages of Altenahr, Dernau, Mayschoß and Bad Neuenahr-Ahrweiler are easily accessible from here.
Family-friendly campsite in Ahrbrück in the central Ahr valley. The beautiful location in a romantic valley surrounded by mountains and forests makes this site the perfect starting point for exploring the surrounding area on the neighbouring hiking trails "Ahrsteig" and "Rotweinwanderweg" as well as on the Ahr cycle path. The shopping centre near the campsite ensures that you are well supplied with everyday necessities.
Large and well-kept family campsite on the edge of the well-known wine village of Altenahr. Altenahr is the starting point of the "Red Wine Hiking Trail", and there are also a number of leisure facilities such as mini golf, tennis courts and fishing spots in the vicinity of the site. In addition to the pitches, the site has a large youth meadow and a children's playground. Catering is provided by the site's own snack bar and the highly recommended "Teufelsloch" restaurant.
If you are travelling from northern or eastern Germany, it makes sense to head for Cologne or Bonn first. Both Rhine cities are easy to reach via the A1 and A4 motorways. During a stopover, it is worth visiting Cologne Cathedral or the Roman-Germanic Museum. Continue to the Ahr via the A61 motorway, which runs west of Cologne. It is around 60 kilometres to Ahrweiler.
An alternative is the A565 motorway through the Kottenforst. If you want to see something of the Rhine on your journey, follow the banks of the B9 to the mouth of the Ahr near Remagen.
From the south, the A61 motorway is the most important connection to the Rhineland. The motorway can be reached from Munich and Stuttgart via the A8. If you feel like it, you can take a short detour to Frankfurt, sample some cider in the tradition-conscious neighbourhood of Sachsenhausen and visit one of the museums on the banks of the Main. It is about 560 kilometres from Munich to the Ahr. Stuttgart is around 330 km away, Hamburg 470 km and Berlin 630 km from the destination.
In addition to beautiful nature, the charming little old towns with their surrounding vineyards are particularly inviting for an extended stay on the Ahr. From here, leisure-oriented holidaymakers can set off on a hike through the Ahrgebirge mountains.
Some of the best campsites on the Ahr are located in Bad Neuenahr-Ahrweiler. The spa town is known for its mineral-rich springs, which holidaymakers can enjoy during a day at the spa for wellness treatments. The Roman heritage is also impressive: a visit to the ancient villas makes it clear that even the ancient Romans enjoyed themselves in the healing springs.
The wine culture village of Dernau is one of the most famous and largest wine-growing areas in the entire Ahr valley. Gourmets can best savour the fine wines in the cellars of the Dagernova wine manufactory, where the grapes of more than 600 winegrowers have been processed since 1884. The 361 metre high Krausberg and the Sondersberg vantage point on the district road, which offers one of the most beautiful panoramic views of the entire Ahr valley, are also great places to visit.
The ruins of Are Castle from the 12th century tower high above Altenahr. It is one of the region's most important landmarks and one of the most popular excursion destinations away from the river. The small town also boasts a charming old town centre and many traditional restaurants. In summer and autumn, wine festivals ensure a good atmosphere.
Mayschoß is one of the most important places for growing red wine from the Ahr. There is even a hiking trail dedicated to the noble grape, the "Red Wine Hiking Trail", on which you can admire picturesque landscape formations as well as views of time-honoured vineyards.
During a camping holiday on the Ahr, you can explore the beautiful river and mountain landscapes while hiking, riding and cycling. Many visitors also explore the Ahr Valley by bike or on foot.
The Ahrsteig is one of the most important hiking routes in the region. Divided into six stages, the route is a total of 108 kilometres long and offers practical junctions, including the picturesque red wine hiking trail. There are several hiking car parks along the routes as well as connections to the regional bus routes and the Ahr Valley railway.
On the scenic Ahr Valley cycle path, cyclists follow the 85 km course of the Ahr from its source in Blankenheim to where it flows into the Rhine at Remagen. The route is tarmac and well maintained. As there are hardly any major inclines, the route is ideal for excursions with children.
With the mineral-rich springs that bubble up from the volcanic rock along the Ahr, the region is also a top destination for those seeking relaxation. In the Ahr thermal baths in Bad Neuenahr-Ahrweiler, visitors can relax in the mineral bath and jacuzzi, with massages and in the sauna.
The wine festivals in particular attract visitors to the Ahr. The region also organises a number of concerts and music events.
The Ahr and the Ahr Valley are known far beyond the region for their first-class wines. Municipalities such as Altenahr, Mayschoß, Ahrweiler and Dernau in particular are among the most important red wine growing areas. When visiting a wine festival or taking a trip to the wineries, holidaymakers can see the quality of the products for themselves.
The Ahr region also offers good, regional cuisine with hearty food. For example, the combination of roasted apples and potatoes, known as heaven and earth, is very popular. Rhenish sauerbraten and rolled roast go best with this. Delicious fish specialities such as trout, zander and carp also come from the region's rivers.
The months from the end of April to the beginning of October are particularly suitable for camping holidays on the Ahr. During this time, outdoor temperatures average between 14 and 23 degrees Celsius. On some days, the temperatures can rise to 30 degrees Celsius.
The highest temperatures can be expected between June and August. The campsites gradually fill up during this period. Many visitors take advantage of the pleasantly warm climate to go on excursions into nature. With slightly less rainfall than in midsummer, the months of May, September and October are also well suited for a camping holiday with a motorhome on the Ahr.
