Special features of camping in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region

Located in the south-east of France, the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region impresses guests with its picturesque river landscapes as well as breathtaking mountain ranges and volcanoes - a paradise for all those who appreciate experiences in unspoilt nature. Campers will also find many rivers with clear water and marvellous lakes that promise to cool off on hot summer days. Active holidaymakers appreciate the wide-ranging sports programme.

France's third-largest region borders Switzerland and Italy and also impresses with its rich history and many cultural monuments. The diversity of this part of the country can also be recognised in the campsites in Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes: Whether close to traditional villages with many architectural highlights, near refreshing lakes with plenty of entertainment or in unusual accommodation such as tree houses: A camping holiday in this region is an inspiring experience!

How to get there

For many Germans, the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region is not that far away. There are around 730 kilometres between Munich and the metropolis of Lyon. The route leads through Switzerland and can easily be completed in one day. The road network on this route is well signposted and well developed. However, campers should be aware that there can often be traffic jams in the peak season months of July and August.

Caravan owners and motorhome drivers take the route from Munich via the Allgäu region past Lake Constance towards Zurich, past Bern and then towards Geneva. From there, it is only around 150 kilometres to the culturally rich city of Lyon. A stopover is recommended in Bern, where holidaymakers can take a look at the medieval old town and its architecture.

It's hardly any further from Cologne either: after 740 km via Trier, Luxembourg, Nancy and Dijon, Lyon can be reached quickly via motorways. However, it should be noted that tolls are charged on most sections of motorway in France.

Destinations in Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes

Camping in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region is characterised by charming mountain landscapes, lively cities and a multitude of interesting sights. Whether it's the vibrant city of Lyon, which scores particularly highly as a gastronomic Eldorado, or the active holiday paradise of Grenoble - Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes is always an experience!

Lyon

The capital of the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region attracts many culture vultures with its historic atmosphere. Camping guests can explore the 2,000-year-old history of the city centre and visit the Roman Amphithéâtre des Trois Gaules, among other things. Many holidaymakers get to know the picturesque old town on a shopping spree along the many attractive boutiques. Numerous small restaurants and cafés line the streets and invite you to linger. Lyon is also known for its remarkable architecture, which is characterised by both medieval and Renaissance architecture.

Grenoble

The French city of Grenoble lies at the foot of the western high mountains of the Alps and is a well-known destination for winter sports enthusiasts. But there are also many interesting activities for culture lovers, such as a visit to the Musée de Grenoble, which is one of the largest art collections in the country. A cable car provides a link between Grenoble and the Bastille, an impressive fortress on a 476 metre-high hill. It was built in the 19th century and is still a popular excursion destination for holidaymakers of all ages.

Activities and excursions

The Alps are a favourite destination for lovers of mountainous surroundings and outdoor activities. The picturesque natural heritage of the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region provides the perfect setting for long hikes or cycle tours.

Hiking

Over hill and dale to the ancient volcanoes of the Puys mountain range: there are plenty of popular hiking trails in Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes. Holidaymakers hike along hills, gorges and picturesque lakes with turquoise-blue water and enjoy the region's unique natural treasures. Some hiking trails also wind their way through old villages with typical French character to historic castles from the Middle Ages, before exploring the green heart of France with its exciting volcanic landscapes.

Excursion to the Jura massif

A detour to the Jura massif is definitely worthwhile for nature lovers and sports enthusiasts alike: vast green expanses, numerous colourful flowers, picture-book mountain pastures and impressive waterfalls delight travellers to France year after year. The region is also particularly popular with fans of paragliding and other outdoor activities such as paragliding.

Discover the south-east of France by bike

The landscape of the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region naturally also invites you to enjoy both leisurely and sporty cycling tours. For example, around Lake Annecy, which is one of the top natural beauties in Haute-Savoie. Also worthwhile is a tour on the ViaRhôna, which is partly car-free and runs from Lake Geneva through Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes to the Mediterranean.

Gastronomy

When it comes to cuisine, the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region is known for its excellent quality and sinfully good delicacies. Guests will also find a large selection of high-quality wines, for example from the Beaujolais and Savoie regions. In some regions, these are also lovingly celebrated, such as in the city of Lyon, where gastronomic festivals such as the Goût de France are often organised.

The absolute delicacy in Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes is cheese, as the environment is ideal for grazing. Both cow's and goat's milk are used in the production process. Popular cheeses in the French Alps include the blue cheeses Bleu de Gex and Fourme de Montbrison, which you should definitely try.

Best time to visit

The perfect time to visit the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region depends on what kind of holiday you are looking for. In many parts of the region, summers are usually warm and dry with many hours of sunshine, while the winter months are comparatively cold and rainy.

Active holidaymakers prefer spring and autumn: with pleasant temperatures of around 20 degrees Celsius, these two seasons offer the ideal conditions for sports of all kinds. Those interested in culture also favour this time of year to make the most of the wide range of sights on offer in temperatures that are not too hot. The months from June to September are ideal for a relaxing beach holiday on the lakes and rivers in this part of the country.
