Travelling to Holland by campervan is straightforward. However, journey times vary depending on the destination in Holland and the starting point in Germany. Guests travelling from southern Bavaria to Amsterdam can expect to cover a distance of around 800 km. The journey from the north of Germany is correspondingly shorter: from Cologne to the Dutch capital is just 260 km.
Motorhome drivers usually take the A3 motorway in the direction of Oberhausen. Shortly after Emmerich, they cross the Dutch border and take the A12 motorway. Then head towards Amersfoort and later take the A1 motorway to the Amsterdam exit. It is advisable to fill up beforehand, as petrol prices are higher in the neighbouring country.
On the relatively short stretch from Cologne to Amsterdam, it is not absolutely necessary to stop for a break. However, if you continue towards North Holland to the campsite, you should make a stop in the metropolis or spend the night there. It is advisable to book a room in a hotel in advance, as Holland's capital is an attractive destination all year round.
In addition to the sea and beaches and Holland's many national parks, the country's historic cities are also attractive for a camping holiday: Amsterdam and The Hague are among the cultural centres of the Netherlands thanks to their convenient location and numerous sights.
The Zeeland region is located in the south-west of the Netherlands and offers endless sandy beaches and particularly long hours of sunshine. This makes it a popular destination for campers who want to spend their holiday by the sea, especially in summer.
North Holland stretches from Zandvoort to Den Helder and combines everything that makes the Netherlands so attractive. Fields of flowers, beautiful beaches and small, quaint villages. One of the most popular places in North Holland is Egmond an Zee - the beach is considered by many to be the best in the Netherlands.
The largest North Sea island in Holland offers unique nature reserves, pretty villages and a 30 kilometre long sandy beach. The island is also a good starting point for mudflat walks in the Wadden Sea.
With more than 1,000 bridges, the capital of Amsterdam exudes a special charm that visitors will not only discover on a canal cruise through the city's numerous canals. Art connoisseurs will also be delighted by the many exhibition centres in the metropolis and spend hours in the impressive Rijksmuseum or the world-famous Anne Frank House. The nearest beach isn't far away in Amsterdam either: by motorhome or on tram line 26, bathing enthusiasts can travel to Blijburg beach in the IJburg district in the east of the Dutch capital.
Visitors to the Netherlands' third-largest metropolis often smell the delicate scent of the sea as they stroll along the tiny streets of the charming old town. At the Binnenhof, guests have landed in the heart of the city. The spacious, protected building complex serves as the seat of the Dutch parliament. From here, it is only a few steps to the royal family's official residence. The waving flag on Paleis Noordeinde immediately indicates whether the king is currently in the neoclassical palace building.
While the younger guests can let off steam in the amusement park, short island excursions sweeten your camping holiday in Holland.
A visit to the Duinrell holiday park on the outskirts of Wassenaar is an exciting experience. The activities on offer include a fairytale wonderland, which attracts younger guests in particular, and Rick's Adventure Castle, where children can climb around to their heart's content. Afterwards, the youngsters can take a spin on the carousel. For teenagers, the long summer toboggan run, the white water rollercoaster and other rides such as Dragonfly and Falcon are the highlights.
The car ferry runs several times a day from the farthest tip of North Holland, Den Helder, across to the island of Texel. The journey takes just 20 minutes. Once there, you can use the kilometre-long beach for swimming, and dog owners can also enjoy a walk with their four-legged friends. Horse riding, cycling and kite flying are also among the guests' favourite activities.
Exciting events await visitors to Holland throughout the year.
Anyone on holiday so close to the Dutch coast should of course try the country's typical seafood cuisine. Freshly caught prawns, cod or a matjes roll on the hand are ideal as a small snack on the campsite. There are also numerous fish dishes on the menu in the restaurants.
Cod fillet lekkerbek, for example, is a hearty main course for lunch or dinner. Like many other meat dishes on the menu, the fried fish is served with chips and another side dish, usually salad.
The typical patat met is served with first-class, mostly homemade mayonnaise. If you have a sweet tooth, you should try the delicious pancake variations - the Dutch "pannekoeken" whet your appetite with their aroma alone.
