Tulip fields, windmills, picturesque little villages and endless beaches on the North Sea coast or the Ijsselmeer: camping in Holland is pure variety. And since the Dutch are known to be big camping fans themselves, there is a huge selection of great campsites in the Netherlands.

Camping in Holland: all important information at a glance

If you go on a camping holiday to Holland, you really don't have to complain about a lack of campsites. There is a wide range of suitable sites for motorhomes, caravans and tent campers in every region.

The wide range of different types of campsites is particularly exciting. The choice ranges from huge holiday parks, traditional campsites and nature campsites to tent sites and camping on a farm.

Glamping is also becoming increasingly popular in Holland. Luxuriously furnished tents with beds, en-suite bathrooms and every comfort can be found on more and more campsites in Holland. Numerous rental accommodation options are also available. If you are not travelling with your own motorhome, you can stay in a mobile home, chalet or a fully equipped rental caravan instead.

Many campsites in North Holland are located right by the sea and offer direct beach access to the North Sea, the Ijsselmeer and the Wadden Sea. This makes them perfect for a beach holiday in the summer months. Sporty guests can enjoy surfing, wakeboarding or kayaking on the water sports on offer, while other visitors can explore the coast on a bike tour or while hiking along the long dune paths.

Those who like to alternate between the city and the sea when camping in Holland are best advised to settle down at one of South Holland's numerous motorhome sites. The metropolises of Amsterdam, Rotterdam and The Hague, which are lined up along the North Sea coast, offer an exciting mix of history and modernity. The multicultural art and culture scene is just a few kilometres from the countryside: Nature reserves for hiking as well as vast pine forests by small lakes between Wassenaar and The Hague enrich the leisure offer and awaken the spirits.

The best campsites in Holland

To make the choice a little easier, here are some of the most beautiful campsites in Holland: - Camping Duinrell: Popular campsite for families in a wooded area with its own leisure park, water paradise, huge pool area and spacious grass pitches - Strandcamping Groede: Large beach campsite on one of Holland's cleanest beaches on the Zeeland coast. - Camping Molenhof: Just 15 minutes across the border, this 4.5-star campsite is located in an idyllic green landscape, surrounded by numerous walking and cycling routes. - Ardoer Vakantiepark 't Akkertien: Holiday park in a beautiful nature reserve with lots of water in the province of Overijssel. If you don't want a pitch, you can also spend the night in a real helicopter. - Vakantiepark De Luttenberg: Smaller holiday park in a beautiful wooded area in Overijssel. There is an indoor and outdoor swimming pool on the site. - Camping Kogerstrand on Texel: The perfect campsite for a holiday by the sea on the North Sea island of Texel. If you want to camp in the dunes, this is the place for you. - Camping Ijsselstrand: A great, family-friendly campsite with a large indoor pool, indoor playground and extensive leisure facilities. - Vakantiepark Kijkduin: A beautiful 4-star campsite right behind the dunes of the North Sea coast in South Holland. - Camping Julianahoeve: One of the most popular campsites in Renesse in the Zeeland region. The proximity to the beach and the wide range of leisure activities on offer make this site a favourite not only with families.

Camping in Holland by the sea

Many campers travel to the Dutch coast in the summer months to enjoy a carefree beach holiday with plenty of sun, sand and sea. Not without reason: the North Sea coast stretches from the island of Texel in the north to Zeeland in South Holland and offers numerous great campsites.

Popular holiday regions for a camping holiday in Holland by the sea include Texel, Scheveningen and seaside resorts such as Katwijk aan Zee, Bergen aan Zee and Wijk aan Zee. Here campers can enjoy the beach, water sports, sailing, surfing or stripping off on the nudist beach.

There are also numerous hiking and cycling trails leading from most campsites by the sea through the nature reserves on the Dutch coast. The metropolises of The Hague, Rotterdam and Amsterdam can be reached quickly from here and the smaller towns of Alkmaar, Haarlem and Leiden are also easy to visit.

Tips for camping holidays in Holland with your dog

Dogs are welcome on most campsites in Holland. However, you should find out in advance whether there are any special rules, for example if you are taking your dog with you to a mobile home and not staying in your own camper. As a rule, four-legged friends must be kept on a lead on campsites.

If you want to take your dog to the beach in Holland, you should choose a dog beach. Dogs are usually allowed to run around on the beach off the lead from October to April and are also allowed in the water. However, there are special rules depending on the dog beach. You should therefore pay attention to the relevant signs.

The most beautiful and popular beaches for dogs in Holland include

  • Noordwijk dog beach
  • Zandvoort dog beach
  • Scheveningen dog beach
  • Zeeland dog beach
  • Texel dog beach
  • Dog beach Egmond aan Zee
  • Dog beach Wassenaar
  • Dog beach Oostvoorne

How to get to Holland

Travelling to Holland by campervan is straightforward. However, journey times vary depending on the destination in Holland and the starting point in Germany. Guests travelling from southern Bavaria to Amsterdam can expect to cover a distance of around 800 km. The journey from the north of Germany is correspondingly shorter: from Cologne to the Dutch capital is just 260 km.

Motorhome drivers usually take the A3 motorway in the direction of Oberhausen. Shortly after Emmerich, they cross the Dutch border and take the A12 motorway. Then head towards Amersfoort and later take the A1 motorway to the Amsterdam exit. It is advisable to fill up beforehand, as petrol prices are higher in the neighbouring country.

On the relatively short stretch from Cologne to Amsterdam, it is not absolutely necessary to stop for a break. However, if you continue towards North Holland to the campsite, you should make a stop in the metropolis or spend the night there. It is advisable to book a room in a hotel in advance, as Holland's capital is an attractive destination all year round.

The most popular regions and destinations in Holland

In addition to the sea and beaches and Holland's many national parks, the country's historic cities are also attractive for a camping holiday: Amsterdam and The Hague are among the cultural centres of the Netherlands thanks to their convenient location and numerous sights.

Zeeland

The Zeeland region is located in the south-west of the Netherlands and offers endless sandy beaches and particularly long hours of sunshine. This makes it a popular destination for campers who want to spend their holiday by the sea, especially in summer.

North Holland

North Holland stretches from Zandvoort to Den Helder and combines everything that makes the Netherlands so attractive. Fields of flowers, beautiful beaches and small, quaint villages. One of the most popular places in North Holland is Egmond an Zee - the beach is considered by many to be the best in the Netherlands.

Texel

The largest North Sea island in Holland offers unique nature reserves, pretty villages and a 30 kilometre long sandy beach. The island is also a good starting point for mudflat walks in the Wadden Sea.

Canals and museums: Amsterdam

With more than 1,000 bridges, the capital of Amsterdam exudes a special charm that visitors will not only discover on a canal cruise through the city's numerous canals. Art connoisseurs will also be delighted by the many exhibition centres in the metropolis and spend hours in the impressive Rijksmuseum or the world-famous Anne Frank House. The nearest beach isn't far away in Amsterdam either: by motorhome or on tram line 26, bathing enthusiasts can travel to Blijburg beach in the IJburg district in the east of the Dutch capital.

The sound of the sea near The Hague

Visitors to the Netherlands' third-largest metropolis often smell the delicate scent of the sea as they stroll along the tiny streets of the charming old town. At the Binnenhof, guests have landed in the heart of the city. The spacious, protected building complex serves as the seat of the Dutch parliament. From here, it is only a few steps to the royal family's official residence. The waving flag on Paleis Noordeinde immediately indicates whether the king is currently in the neoclassical palace building.

Adventure world in Wassenaar

A visit to the Duinrell holiday park on the outskirts of Wassenaar is an exciting experience. The activities on offer include a fairytale wonderland, which attracts younger guests in particular, and Rick's Adventure Castle, where children can climb around to their heart's content. Afterwards, the youngsters can take a spin on the carousel. For teenagers, the long summer toboggan run, the white water rollercoaster and other rides such as Dragonfly and Falcon are the highlights.

The car ferry runs several times a day from the farthest tip of North Holland, Den Helder, across to the island of Texel. The journey takes just 20 minutes. Once there, you can use the kilometre-long beach for swimming, and dog owners can also enjoy a walk with their four-legged friends. Horse riding, cycling and kite flying are also among the guests' favourite activities.

Gastronomic highlights for campers

Anyone on holiday so close to the Dutch coast should of course try the country's typical seafood cuisine. Freshly caught prawns, cod or a matjes roll on the hand are ideal as a small snack on the campsite. There are also numerous fish dishes on the menu in the restaurants.

Cod fillet lekkerbek, for example, is a hearty main course for lunch or dinner. Like many other meat dishes on the menu, the fried fish is served with chips and another side dish, usually salad.

The typical patat met is served with first-class, mostly homemade mayonnaise. If you have a sweet tooth, you should try the delicious pancake variations - the Dutch "pannekoeken" whet your appetite with their aroma alone.

Weather and best time to go on a camping holiday in Holland

The best time for a beach holiday with camping by the sea in Holland are the summer months of July and August. Peak temperatures of up to 28 degrees and water temperatures of a refreshing 20 degrees make camping trips very pleasant and offer the best conditions for a beach holiday by the sea with the whole family.

Travellers arriving in Holland by motorhome in spring and autumn should consider a city tour. With temperatures around 17 degrees, it is a little too cool for the beach, but hiking or cycling is still possible without any problems.

Those who prefer travelling through the Netherlands in a sporty way will get their money's worth, especially in May or late summer: Temperatures are mild at this time and the wind is not particularly strong.
