Thanks to its numerous islands and peninsulas, the Dutch province of Zeeland boasts over 600 kilometres of coastline. Here, the campsites for a relaxing beach holiday are often located in the middle of the dunes just a stone's throw from the fine sandy beach of the North Sea. The flat landscape in the interior of peninsulas and islands such as Walcheren, Schouwen-Duiveland or Tholen are ideal for nature-loving excursions on two wheels with the family.

Where the Meuse, Scheldt and Rhine rivers flow into the North Sea, the Dutch province of Zeeland offers first-class conditions for camping. Rich, green meadows and pastures for cattle, buffalo and sheep form the backdrop for a leisure-oriented holiday. Many travellers hop on their bikes and follow the dykes. If you feel like it, you can hike from river island to river island or explore the waters by canoe.
Three rivers form a wide delta in the south of the Netherlands, providing the perfect setting for an active holiday. From the campsites close to the shore in Zeeland, you can set off on sailing trips or canoe excursions from island to island. In recent decades, nature has reclaimed many of the regions that were originally used for industrial purposes. Today, holidaymakers can expect rich meadows and polder areas (diked alluvial land).
Zeeland in the Netherlands is an almost perfect holiday destination for campers. The choice of campsites seems almost endless. In addition to the classic annual pitches with comfort pitches and holiday chalets, it is above all the pitches directly on the beach that enjoy great popularity. Strandpark De Zeeuwse Kust and Camping Duinhoeve in Renesse, Strandcamping Groede, Strandcamping Valkenisse, Camping Weltevreden and Camping Zonneweelde stand for swimming fun in a prime location. In addition to tents and caravans, there is also space for various types of accommodation.
The rental accommodation at Strandpark De Zeeuwse Kust, such as the Boormossel Chalet, offers a high level of comfort. The annual campsite Camping Klaverweide rents out holiday chalets, luxury log cabins and safari tents. Camping In de Bongerd near Oostkapelle offers chalets and caravans for hire. Depending on the size and facilities, there are one or two bedrooms, a bunk bed or single beds, a terrace with garden furniture and a dishwasher.
The province of Zeeland, which is not quite as well known as the Holland region, lies with its islands far to the south-west of the Netherlands and can be reached from Germany via the Ruhr and Rhineland regions, for example. From Cologne or Düsseldorf, you first cross the border to Venlo and then to the tranquil city of Eindhoven. The Dutch A58 motorway continues from here to Tilburg, Breda and finally to Middelburg in Zeeland.
Travellers with motorhomes or caravans from southern Germany can also take a shortcut via Belgium. The A60 motorway first takes holidaymakers past Bitburg to Liège, from where the journey continues to Brussels or Antwerp. Both cities are definitely worth a stopover in view of their "flaming Gothic" architecture. From Antwerp, it is only 60 kilometres to Terneuzen in Zeeland. From northern Germany, it is worth travelling on the A30 motorway via Osnabrück towards Hengelo. On the Dutch side, the road becomes the A1 motorway, which provides a direct link to Amsterdam.
Between Zeeland's three river arms, holidaymakers will find the best conditions for camping on islands and peninsulas such as Walcheren and Beveland.
At the mouth of the Scheldt, the former island of Walcheren offers its visitors marvellous polder landscapes. On the coast, the wide beaches and metre-high dunes invite you to enjoy relaxing days by the water and short hikes. Culturally, Middelburg with its Gothic city centre is an absolute must. The town hall is particularly impressive. Equally worth seeing is the seaside resort of Domburg with its beautiful beaches and marvellous natural landscape.
The southern and northern parts of Beveland are located near Walcheren and offer visitors proximity to the two arms of the Scheldt. Anyone visiting the municipality of Yerseke should definitely try the oysters. This is the centre of oyster farming in the Netherlands. Water sports enthusiasts are drawn to the Veerse Meer, a small lagoon with the best conditions for sailing and windsurfing.
Zeelandic Flanders forms the southernmost part of the province and borders directly on Belgium. Above all, campers in this region enjoy a high degree of peace and seclusion. On the coast, municipalities such as Nieuwesluis, Breskens and Kruishoofd offer wonderful terrain for swimming and sports. Near Terneuzen, the traditional village of Axel with its museum of local history is well worth a visit.
Water sports enthusiasts in particular get their money's worth in Zeeland. In addition to surfing, sailing and kiting, you can also go hiking and cycling through the natural region.
In Zeeland, the cycle paths run right across the dams and dykes, past sandy beaches, dunes, polders and salt marshes. You can easily follow the many rivers, especially the tranquil Scheldt. Exploring towns and villages such as Groede, Renesse, Domburg or Oostkapelle on two wheels is of course particularly attractive.
The winds are ideal for venturing out onto the water with a sailing boat, surfboard or kite. The Veerse Meer and Grevelingen are the best places for beginners to take their first steps. Advanced surfers, on the other hand, are drawn to the open North Sea. The best conditions for kitesurfing are at Brouwersdam, Neeltje Jans and Kamperland.
Wide, secluded landscapes await hikers on the islands of Schouwen-Duiveland and Zeeuws-Vlaanderen. The Verdronken Land van Saeftinghe nature reserve in particular is characterised by its lush nature. You can follow the so-called pearl routes from one attraction to another using the Zeeland app.
Seasonal gourmet and gourmet festivals with fish, mussels or lobster are among the annual highlights in Zeeland.
Zeeland is known for its high-quality agricultural produce. The farms in the immediate vicinity of most campsites and the markets offer organic sheep and beef, among other things. The products are processed into tasty roasts with local herbs. The fields of Zeeland also grow high-quality asparagus varieties, which are prepared with egg and ham when in season. If you look into Zeeland's cooking pots, you will also discover many seafood dishes. Nothing beats mussels cooked in white wine and the famous Oosterschelde lobster.
Zeeland is a true swimming paradise in summer. Especially in July and August, the conditions are good for jumping into the refreshing North Sea water. The sea then warms up to around 19 degrees Celsius. Up to 22 degrees Celsius can be expected in the air. The months of June and September are also good for water sports enthusiasts. The temperatures then fluctuate between eleven and 21 degrees Celsius during the day. You can also expect less rainfall than in midsummer.
