Camping on Elba is the perfect place for the best time of the year. The island in the Tuscan archipelago offers kilometres of beaches, turquoise-blue Mediterranean Sea and a diverse landscape with cliffs, holm oaks and rugged mountain peaks. Camping by the sea makes for a wonderfully relaxing holiday by the Mediterranean. Active holidaymakers get their money's worth with water sports, cycling tours and long hikes.
Elba is an Italian island off the coast of Tuscany and is known for two things: Its wonderful beaches and the fact that Napoleon was exiled here at the beginning of the 19th century. Today, Elba is also a popular holiday destination for campers in Italy.
The campsites are mostly located in the north, east and south of the island, where the most beautiful beaches are located. Numerous beautiful campsites have sprung up along the beautiful stretches of coastline with spacious and small bays. Sun worshippers and water sports enthusiasts feel right at home here. The somewhat wilder west coast, on the other hand, is an Eldorado for mountain fans and outdoor sports enthusiasts, as the mountains there tower into the sky. However, the routes there are only suitable for very experienced motorhome drivers.
Elba is also known as a paradise for divers and snorkellers and has many good diving spots for exploring the fascinating underwater world of the Mediterranean. There are diving schools and diving centres in many places. To get from A to B easily, holidaymakers can hire a scooter from the moped hire service and explore the coastal landscapes on their own.
Elba offers campsites for every taste. The offer ranges from simple campsites close to nature to luxurious facilities with a large swimming area, wellness offers such as underwater massages and play parks for children. Those travelling to Elba by car can rent mobile homes and bungalows on site. Some campsites also offer a towing service for steeper pitches.
Many of the campsites are located directly by the sea and also have their own beach access. For many holidaymakers, this is the main motivation for coming to Elba. Even naturists get their money's worth, as naturist camping is also offered in some places. The island is particularly popular during the holidays. It is therefore worth booking in good time during the high season.
The campsites on Elba can be easily reached by car, caravan or motorhome. There are regular ferry connections to the island via the Tuscan archipelago from the harbour in Piombino. Although tickets for the crossing can be purchased directly on site, it is advisable to buy them in advance, especially during the holiday season. The crossing to Portoferraio takes around 70 minutes, to Rio Marina around 45 minutes and to Cavo around 35 minutes.
The distances to Piombino from Hamburg are around 1500 km, Berlin 1380 km, Cologne 1210 km and Munich 790 km. The journey then continues to the well-known campsites Laconella, Scaglieri Village, Village Rosselba Le Palme, Lacona Pineta and the beautiful beaches at Biodola.
The cuisine on Elba is down-to-earth and very tasty. The menus often consist of several courses, with fresh country bread with a crispy crust always on the table. Delicious fish dishes such as stockfish, mussels in tomato sauce, spaghetti with clams or fish soup are on offer, as is meat. Restaurant menus include roast pork with garlic and rosemary and wild boar goulash. In autumn, there are delicacies with porcini mushrooms, guinea fowl and pheasant.
As the west is dominated by the granite massif of Monte Capanne with a view of the archipelago, most water lovers enjoy the bathing bays around the Gulf of Portoferraio in the north, in the bay of Porto Azzuro or on the Calamita peninsula in the south-east and around the beaches of Marina di Campo and Lacona in the south.
This enchanting town stands out from afar with its mighty 17th century fortress, Forte San Giacomo. After a tour, head to the fishing district, where holidaymakers can admire the luxury yachts. After a day on the Terranera or Barbarossa beaches, a meal in one of the romantic pile-dwelling restaurants tastes particularly delicious.
A dreamy beach with crystal-clear water, just 6 kilometres from the island's capital Portoferraio. Here, those seeking peace and quiet will enjoy the bay far away from the crowds of holidaymakers.
The 2 km long, light-coloured sandy beach attracts visitors from all over the world. A wide range of entertainment options with boutiques, bars and nightclubs provide a change from sunbathing. The historic part of the former fishing village is characterised by a tower dating back to the 12th century.
As one of the seven municipalities on Elba, Marciana impresses with densely overgrown mountain ridges in the national parks and partly barren rocks on the coast. At 1,019 metres, Monte Capanne offers a magnificent view of the Mare and Cap Corse in the distance.
It is warmest on Elba in August at around 23.8 degrees Celsius. The sunniest month is July with 11.8 hours of sunshine a day. Even when the thermometer breaks the 30-degree mark in summer, the sea breeze ensures comfortable weather. This is also the peak season on Elba.
The climate on the third largest Italian island is generally moderate and mild. Even in winter, temperatures are usually around 10 degrees Celsius, although snowfall can occur on the summit of the highest mountain, Monte Capanne. Most of the year's rain falls between October and March, with November being the wettest month.
Active holidaymakers who want to explore the island by bike or on hikes from the campsite can expect temperatures of around 17 degrees Celsius from April. Between June and October, the sea is usually over 20 degrees Celsius.
With its long sandy beaches, small bays and mighty mountain ranges, the Tuscan island is a true beauty in the Mediterranean. While the picturesque nature attracts many outdoor enthusiasts, the sites with Roman and medieval artefacts are very popular with culture vultures. Excursions to enchanting old towns and historical sights quench the thirst for knowledge of young and old alike.
There are good trekking and mountain bike trails all over the island. There is a particularly beautiful cycle tour in the east. It starts after the former ore mining town of Capoliveri and leads up Monte Calamita on three different levels of difficulty. If you want to explore the entire island on foot, there is a 72 km long-distance hiking trail.
The crystal-clear sea of Elba is a paradise for water rats, divers and snorkellers. Holidaymakers can discover the coastline with its rugged cliffs, grottos and beaches from a sailing boat or sea kayak. If you fancy marvelling at colourful schools of fish, Poseidon grass gardens and fascinating coral formations, you should book an excursion into the underwater world with one of the renowned diving schools.
On Elba, as in the rest of Italy, people like to celebrate often. Here is a selection of celebrations and festivals that camping holidaymakers on Elba should not miss during their stay.
