The French region of Centre, known as Centre-Val de Loire since 2015, is located south of Paris and relatively centrally in France. The longest river in France, the Loire, crosses the region on its way to the Atlantic Ocean and has always been a favourite haunt of kings, artists and writers.

The attraction of the Loire is no coincidence, as large parts of the river have been classified by UNESCO as an exceptional cultural landscape. Centre is ideal for riverside camping and nature camping.

Special features of camping in Centre-Val de Loire

The region enchants with its numerous rivers, streams and valleys in their blue-green splendour and is home to a whole series of extraordinary castles and parks. Along the Loire and close to nature parks, there are plenty of first-class campsites in Centre-Val de Loire for the enthusiastic camper.

The very well-developed infrastructure between the cities of Orléans, Tours and Bourges, as well as between smaller towns, makes it easy to get around quickly in a motorhome. The good road network is of course also ideal for wonderful excursions by bike, be it to the numerous castles, to romantic places along the Loire or for brunch in a picturesque village. Centre-Val de Loire is a dream paradise for nature lovers, connoisseurs and gourmets alike - the region impresses with its natural and urban charm as well as its typical regional culinary specialities.

How to get there

Orléans is the capital of the region and also the closest city to Germany. The impressive Renaissance city is world-famous above all for Joan of Arc, the Maid of Orléans. Saarbrücken is a recommended starting point in Germany due to its direct location on the French border. Saarbrücken: It is a total of 535 kilometres from the Saarland capital to Orléans. First cross the French border at Stiring-Wendel on the B41 and then continue on the A320 past Forbach. At Freyming-Merlebach, the route continues west on the A4, where the enchanting city of Metz with its historic buildings appears. The motorway takes travellers through a small section of the Parc naturel régional de Lorraine wildlife park and below Verdun. Above Châlons-en-Champagne, the road changes to the A26 and then heads south to Troyes. The town has many pretty half-timbered houses and squares. An ideal destination for a break and refuelling. The final stage is then formed by the A5 and the A19, which take the camper to the destination of Orléans.

Destinations in Centre

In addition to the idyllic countryside, Centre is also home to picturesque villages and medieval towns with impressive buildings from earlier eras.

Amboise

The small town of Amboise on the Loire is truly charming. The town is associated with the French royal family, Leonardo Da Vinci and lush weekly markets. Amboise has its own castle, the Château d'Amboise. However, the town is also a favourable starting point for visiting numerous castles such as Chenonceau, Chaumont, Blois and Chambord to the east of Tours. Amboise impresses with its medieval flair and corresponding half-timbered houses, which have been lovingly restored. There are excellent restaurants and cafés in the town, which offer wine tastings as well as local specialities.

Candes-Saint-Martin

Candes-Saint-Martin looks a little like the set of a medieval film. The alleyways are very narrow, so it is advisable to leave the car in one of the car parks at each end of the village and explore the quaint, almost completely white village on foot. The impressive landmark is the fortified church dedicated to St Martin de Tours. Candes-Saint-Martin has an old, small harbour and pretty little cafés with a French flair.

Activities and excursions

There are plenty of activities and excursions in the well-connected villages and valleys. Of course, the marvellous Loire is particularly attractive for very special moments.

Cycling along the Loire

There are countless opportunities to explore the Loire by bike. One of these is the Loire Cycle Route. The cycle route runs through two regions, six départements and six metropolitan regions. The best seasons for this pleasure are spring and autumn, as the routes are less frequented and offer space and undisturbed enjoyment. In addition to Loire à vélo, there are eleven other routes along the Loire, which extend from the Atlantic to up to ten other European countries. Along the way, you can stop for refreshments in many places or take a refreshing dip in the Loire.

Chambord Castle

Chambord Castle is located around 15 kilometres east of Bois. It is the largest and most magnificent castle in the Loire region and is located in the centre of a former hunting ground. The massive building was built in the 16th century by King Francis I and served as a pompous hunting and ceremonial palace. The palace can be visited on your own or with a French or English-speaking guide.

Gastronomy

Centre is all about regional flavours. Gourmets appreciate the andouillettes de Jargeau, which are sausages stuffed with offal such as pork stomach and intestines. But fish from the Loire, game from Sologne and poultry specialities from Orléans are also among the region's delicacies.

Vegetarians can also enjoy typical regional delicacies such as savoury lentil stews and cheese delicacies. Goat's cheese from Selles-sur-Cher, Crottin de Chavignol and Valençay are just a small selection of what the region has to offer. Excellent desserts have also long since made a name for themselves in Centre. A traditional apple tart called Tarte Tatin or Pithiviers, an almond tart, are recommended in one of the many cafés. Regional fine wines such as Vouvray and Chinon are ideal for wine lovers.

Best time to visit

The hilly landscape in the southern Paris Basin rarely reaches an altitude of 200 metres and is characterised by an oceanic and continental climate. The weather is rather temperate. The hottest month of the year is July with an average temperature of 25 degrees Celsius. December and January are the coldest months of the year with an average temperature of 6°C. Rainfall tends to be heavy and also peaks in December and January. Only the area around Beauce is rather dry in comparison. Camping in Centre is suitable all year round, while the summer months are particularly suitable for walks and water sports on the Loire.
