The Vogtland is located in the three federal states of Bavaria, Saxony and Thuringia as well as on the Czech side in Bohemia. The idyllic landscape of fields, meadows, hilltops and forests has always been a favourite motif among landscape painters. It is precisely these natural ingredients that make the region the first choice destination for nature camping and camping by the lake - lovers of impressive natural scenery will get their money's worth when camping in the Vogtland.
Green and lush valleys such as the Elster Valley or wooded areas such as the Pöllwitz Forest with its moorland allow for almost endless hikes of moderate difficulty. The Vogtland has a veritable wealth of different landscapes and is therefore ideal as a camping region for nature lovers.
The Vogtland also boasts a variety of attractive nature reserves such as Steinicht and Greiz-Werdauer Wald, thus preserving its unique treasures. The Vogtland also has many clean bodies of water to offer, such as the Pöhl reservoir or the Weiße Elster with the Dobeneck reservoir. Excellent campsites make for an unforgettable stay near a lake or river.
Plauen, the capital of Vogtland, is relatively centrally located in the region and is a transport hub for the numerous campsites in the surrounding area and can be easily reached from anywhere in Germany.
Chemnitz: The journey from Chemnitz is 73.5 kilometres and takes you past the Ore Mountains. Change from the B173 to the A72 motorway and then back onto the B173 after Neuensalz. The Plauen-Ost exit takes you to Plauen in a short time.
Nuremberg: It is 170 kilometres from Nuremberg to Plauen. Take the A9 motorway past Bayreuth and continue on the A72 and B173 to Plauen. The journey takes you for long stretches through an enchanting landscape.
Munich: From Munich, the 316 km route takes you along the A9 motorway past Ingolstadt. This route overlaps with the route from Nuremberg. You can take a break with plenty of refreshments at the Köschinger Forst Ost service area, for example, which is located on the A9 motorway a good 8 km north of Ingolstadt.
The region is all about natural beauty, so it's no surprise that some of the best excursion destinations in the Vogtland are located in enchanting parks and wildly romantic natural settings.
As a meeting place for admirers of great landscape architecture and walkers with a penchant for natural aesthetics, Fürstlich Greizer Park is the perfect choice. Built in the style of late classicism and situated in front of a park lake, visitors can relax here all year round amidst impressive garden art.
It took no less than 50 years to complete the landscape park, which is located at the Greiz summer palace of the Princes of Reuss. The architect and planner of the landscape park was Pückler's pupil Carl Eduard Petzold, who created a unique park with magnificent flower gardens and rare plants on 45 hectares.
The Pöllwitz Forest is one of the largest forest areas in the state of Thuringia and offers nature lovers unique insights into the regional flora and fauna. The forest is located between Zeulenroda, Neuärgerniß and Pöllwitz in Thuringia's Vogtland region and is home to wild orchids, rare plants and an idyllic moorland adventure trail with a viewing tower.
The FFH nature reserve prioritises gentle tourism and sustainability in a forest that consists mainly of spruce and is partially interspersed with larch and pine. It has been continuously reforested since 1850.
The enchanting Vogtland region surprises with exciting leisure activities and wonderful excursion destinations for camping holidaymakers.
The dreamlike beauty of the Weiße Elster river is widely known, so it is not surprising that guided boat tours are very popular. You can discover the wild yet picturesque Elster valley, through which tours are organised from Berga to Wünschendorf, for example. The routes are suitable for both beginners and experienced paddlers. The two-hour excursion can be extended with detours to the Clodramühle, where a boat slide awaits, or a visit to a restaurant. Interesting animals such as kingfishers, herons, nutrias and numerous species of fish can be observed along the way.
Liebau Castle is located in the municipality of Pöhl, around 2 kilometres north of the Pöhl Dam. It is the ruin of a spur castle and was first mentioned in 1327 as Castrum Lubawe. Just four to five kilometres further north on the other side of the Elster is the ruins of Elsterberg Castle, which is the largest castle ruin in the Vogtland and can easily be visited on the same day. The excursion is particularly recommended for families, as the old castle grounds take children back to the time of knights and offer culturally and historically valuable educational material and long-lasting impressions.
Vogtland cuisine consists of simple, hearty dishes, often prepared with potatoes. The often simple dishes are tasty and nutritious. Thuringian dumplings are very popular and are often served with a delicious Sunday roast and cabbage such as red cabbage or sauerkraut. A traditional meal in the Vogtland and the Ore Mountains is the Neunerlei, which is traditionally served at Christmas.
The festive meal consists of nine courses and includes ingredients such as bratwurst, sauerkraut, lentils, dumplings with carp, goose and roast pork, stewed fruit, nuts and almonds as well as mushrooms and beetroot. Herbal liqueur is recommended to round off a hearty meal, as the tasty schnapps is said to have digestive properties.
Depending on the location, the climate can be quite harsh and can regularly bring snow as late as March. Compared to the neighbouring Ore Mountains, however, the Vogtland has a comparatively low amount of precipitation. The reason for this is its location behind the Thuringian Slate Mountains and the Thuringian Forest, facing away from the wind. However, the higher up you go, the greater the amount of precipitation to be expected.
Generally speaking, mild temperatures prevail in the summer months and periods of sweltering heat are rare. From autumn onwards, the weather cools down noticeably and you should bring appropriate clothing. The winter months can be bitterly cold in places and are therefore only suitable for well-equipped campers.
