The southern Italian region of Apulia forms the well-known heel of the Italian boot on the map. Puglia has a lot to offer campers: The clear, azure blue water, picturesque, partly unspoilt beaches and bays make the region a Mediterranean dream. It's no wonder that Puglia is one of the most popular camping destinations in Italy, with most campsites in Puglia located right by the sea. Many have their own beach access and also rent out beach loungers and parasols. Puglia is therefore perfect for a camping holiday by the sea. Experience shows that pitches for caravans and motorhomes in the first row by the sea are quickly booked out. You should therefore book well in advance if you want a place in the sun. In addition to regular pitches, most holiday resorts in Puglia also offer rental accommodation such as bungalows, mobile homes and holiday flats. Mobile homes are particularly suitable if you want to enjoy the camping flair but are travelling to Puglia without your own motorhome. The facilities usually include a kitchenette, a private bathroom and separate bedrooms for parents and children. Many campsites also have swimming pools with children's pools, playgrounds and sports facilities. In the high season, children's entertainment and other activities for young and old are usually on offer.
Dogs are allowed at many campsites in Puglia. However, it is best to enquire about the rules beforehand. Some campsites only allow small dogs. Often the four-legged companions must also be kept on a lead on the campsite. The best dog-friendly campsites in Apulia offer services such as dog showers, exercise areas and dedicated dog beaches. Dogs are generally not allowed in the water on public beaches and don't forget: To enter Italy with your dog, you will need a valid EU pet passport. The dog must also be vaccinated against rabies and have a microchip. It is generally not a problem to take your dog to restaurants.
If you are travelling to Puglia from Germany by caravan or motorhome, you can expect a long but beautiful journey. Depending on the starting point, the distance is around 1,500 kilometres. During the peak season in the summer months of July and August, traffic jams and increased traffic volumes are to be expected. From the German city of Munich, take the A22 Brenner motorway to Bolzano and then change to the A1 towards Bologna. From here, the route continues along the well-developed A14 motorway to Apulia. From western Germany, the best way to get to Basel is on the A5 via Frankfurt am Main and then continue on the A2 Gotthard motorway to Chiasso, which lies on the border between Switzerland and Italy. From here, take the A9 motorway towards Milan and then continue via Bologna on the A14. The picturesque town of Rimini on the Adriatic coast is a great place for a leisurely stopover during the longer journey. It is located directly on the route and is known for its great beaches and exciting nightclubs. Please note that the Brenner motorway and the motorways in Italy are subject to tolls. In Italy, you can avoid the toll by taking side roads. However, this will make the journey longer.
