The French region of Aquitaine is a dream for camping holidaymakers. Not only the coast on the Bay of Biscay and the Atlantic coast offer the best conditions for a varied holiday in the open air. The hinterland is also attractive for travellers with tents, caravans or motorhomes, with its famous wine-growing regions, extensive woodlands, hilly areas suitable for hiking and idyllic river landscapes.
Nouvelle Aquitaine offers the best conditions for camping holidaymakers. Numerous campsites offer an exceptionally good infrastructure, three of which are 5-star campsites. The infrastructure is particularly well developed along the coast. But travellers with caravans and campers also have a considerable choice in the nature park regions, with a wide range of options from simple nature campsites for purists to modern camping villages with an entertainment programme and a generally high standard. Extensive aqua parks, wellness centres and plenty of space for a wide range of leisure activities round off the offer.
Camping Hourtin in the Gironde department and the Aquadis-Loisirs campsites on the banks of a river or lake are particularly worthwhile destinations. The Yelloh campsites guarantee an unforgettable water sports experience with their pools and slides.
The classic campsites in Aquitaine are the numerous camping villages with pitches of various sizes. Electricity and waste water connections for motorhomes are standard, and some also have their own motorhome parks.
Due to the long camping tradition in Aquitaine, many visitors pitch their tents under old trees. Motorhomes or caravans are also parked in partial shade so that it remains bearable even in hot summer temperatures. Traditionally, Aquitaine also has some nudist campsites in prime locations for nude camping fun.
Almost all campsites in Aquitaine also offer rental accommodation, for example the classic mobile home, bungalows or unusual glamping accommodation. Rental accommodation is very popular with locals. The choice ranges from functional accommodation to luxurious holiday chalets in the premium sector. The mobile homes usually have several rooms, a large terrace and TV. Prices vary depending on the number of nights and people. You should book your favourite accommodation in good time. The campsites are particularly well booked during the French school holidays.
Dogs are allowed on many campsites in Aquitaine, but you should check the rules regarding keeping dogs on leads beforehand. Dogs are usually not allowed on the beaches, but there are a number of dog beaches where four-legged friends are allowed in the water. There are seasonal bans on some beaches: Dogs are often allowed from October to April, but are prohibited in the high season.
Hourtin on the Atlantic coast in the Gironde department is blessed with four campsites or camping villages, all of which are located in the immediate vicinity of the beach. Camping La Côte d'Argent is exemplary for the numerous water sports activities with a waterfall, whirlpool, slides and children's play island as well as an outdoor pool. In addition to the numerous pitches for caravans and motorhomes, there are also mobile homes for several people to stay in. The spacious rooms and wooden terraces with a view of the sea are very popular in Hourtin and therefore in great demand.
The camping villages of Aquadis-Loisirs on the banks of the river or the lake offer camping close to nature in rental accommodation and pitches for motorhomes and caravans with electricity and drainage. Aquadis-Loisirs scores with special offers from seven nights or a week for couples. Alternatively, the Yelloh facilities are also a worthwhile holiday destination in the region. The water sports activities are particularly popular with guests. With its infrastructure, Yelloh is more in the premium price bracket.
The Atlantic coast is one of the most attractive surfing areas in Europe. Lacanau, Biscarrosse, Hossegor and Biarritz are at the top of the popularity scale for surfers and are regularly the venues for top-class competitions. The campsites on the beach offer the best conditions for getting directly to the sea without much effort. There are often hire centres and surf schools directly on site.
Nouvelle Aquitaine is also a varied holiday destination in the hinterland. The lakes of the 'Landes' are an ideal spot for water sports such as sailing, windsurfing and kitesurfing. The sandy beaches, shaded by pine trees, are sometimes reminiscent of the Caribbean. Numerous spots can also be found on the marvellous river banks.
The contrast could hardly be greater than on a canoe tour on the wild and romantic Leyre in the Parc Naturel Regional des Landes de Gascogne. But it doesn't always have to be water. A well-developed network of cycle paths encourages tours along the coast or through the hinterland. The Vélodyssée, the French section of the Atlantic long-distance cycle route from Scandinavia to Portugal, crosses Aquitaine and is a great challenge for active campers, especially in spring and early summer.
The region in the south-west of France is a classic summer holiday destination. Then you are spoilt with a mild and sunny climate. Camping in Aquitaine always goes through the stomach. Oysters, which are carefully cultivated in the protected Arcachon basin, are a particular delicacy. Like other seafood and fresh fish, they are one of the seaside specialities. The matching wine is Entre-Deux-Mers, which matures in the special climate between Bordeaux, Dordogne and Garonne.
The Bordelais wine-growing region is famous for its Armagnac, which is now a popular aperitif when fermented with grape juice as a floc. Asparagus, kiwi, strawberries and blueberries grow on the sandy soils, but the region is famous for its duck dishes and the sweet yeast cake pastis sprinkled with loaf sugar, which is a must in any campsite kitchen.
The region in the south-west of France is a classic summer holiday destination. Especially in the months of June to September, you will be spoilt with a mild and sunny climate. However, this is also peak season and the pitches are correspondingly more expensive. A week in a mobile home with several rooms, a terrace with a view and a TV can be expensive, especially in summer.
Aquitaine is also a worthwhile holiday destination in the low season. In April, May and into October, the weather is still quite mild and it is not as crowded as in summer. There are also often special offers for couples and families at this time.
