Southern sunshine, fine sandy beaches and pleasant water temperatures ensure a full guest list at the campsites in Charente-Maritime every year. Culture vultures, gourmets and water sports enthusiasts all get their money's worth here. Whether it's a family holiday on the beach, a holiday with your dog or a motorhome trip through the south of France: camping in Charente-Maritime is synonymous with fun, relaxation and unforgettable holiday experiences.

Special features of camping in Charente-Maritime

Many campsites in Charente-Maritime are located directly on the endless sandy beaches of the Atlantic coast. Here, sailors, surfers and kiters frolic between the sky and the sea, while the youngest water rats splash around in the shallow waters. The soft fine sand is just right for digging and building castles. But a camping holiday in Charente-Maritime has even more to offer.

Dreamy fishing villages, picturesque towns and exploratory tours in the hinterland. There are a particularly large number of inviting campsites around the regional capital of La Rochelle. The harbour town is bursting with Romanesque churches and architectural masterpieces from Roman times. There are also extensive nature parks - a true Eldorado for hikers and nature lovers. From culturally interested campers aged 50+ to large families in mobile homes, everyone will find their niche here.

How to get there

Even the journey to Charente-Maritime is absolutely worthwhile. On the approximately 1,000 km long route from Germany to the south of France, there is one place worth seeing after another. From central Germany, for example from Frankfurt am Main, the route leads via Kaiserslautern to Saarbrücken. From there, the route leads through varied landscapes past Metz to Champagne.

From Reims, the route heads to the outskirts of the French capital Paris. This is where the Aquitaine, the A 10 motorway, branches off. If you are not planning a detour for sightseeing in the metropolis, continue in the direction of Orleans. If you have enough time, you should definitely pay a short visit to the historic City of Arts here. The route then leads through the wine-growing areas in the Loire Valley to Aquitaine. From Tours, the route continues via Poitiers to the junction of the A 837 motorway towards La Rochelle. Et voilá: The picturesque harbour town between the banks of the Charente and the Atlantic is the capital of the Charente-Maritime destination.

Destinations in Charente-Maritime

Lovers of fresh seafood should opt for a campsite in the former fishing villages of Marennes, Châtelaillon-Plage or Ars-en-Ré. The elegant seaside resorts of Saint-Georges-de-Didonne near Royan and Saint-Palais-sur-Mer are just the thing for discerning water sports enthusiasts. If you want to spice up your beach holiday in Charente-Maritime with a little art and culture, it's best to look for a campsite near La Rochelle, Saint-Martin-de-Ré or Saintes.

Saintes: Hotspot for nature lovers and culture vultures

Before the Romans colonised Saintes, the town on the banks of the Charente was an important port for the Celtic Santones. Today it bears the title Ville d'Art et d'Histoire. In addition to the triumphal arch of Germanicus and a Roman amphitheatre, Saintes boasts a beautiful old town, famous museums and impressive clerical buildings. Nature lovers will find numerous hiking trails with varied flora and fauna on the river banks and in the hinterland.

Île de Ré - the treasure island

Just 1.6 nautical miles from La Rochelle lies one of the most beautiful islands in France. Pine forests, fine sandy beaches, marshlands and lively seaside resorts give Île de Ré its unmistakable character. Unspoilt landscapes, a stiff sea breeze for windsurfers and a handful of the most renowned restaurants in New Aquitaine: no wonder the island is a favourite with Parisians. Don't miss: the city walls of Saint-Martin-de-Ré at sunset.

Top 5 sights

  • Aquarium de La Rochelle: Huge seawater aquariums with rays, sharks, moray eels and many other colourful fish. Particularly exciting: sea turtles and large jellyfish.
  • Fort Boyard: Sea fortress off La Rochelle on an artificial island, built according to Napoleon's plans and completed in 1859.
  • Planet Exotica in Royan: More than 100 terrariums, tastefully integrated into botanical gardens, with royal pythons, green mambas, anacondas and exotic lizards.
  • Towers of La Rochelle: Watchtowers and lighthouse from the 14th century in the harbour entrance near the old town. Also served as a prison at times.
  • Château-d'Oléron: Medieval spectacle in the south-west of the island of Oléron off La Rochelle. Around the castle is a reconstructed medieval village with a daily market.

Top 2 insider tips

  • Nightlife: There are two well-known clubs for dancing and partying in La Rochelle: L'Oxford on the Plage de la Concurrence and Le Triolet in the Rue des Carmes.
  • Café de la Paix: Elegantly furnished Art Nouveau café in the Rue Chaudrier in La Rochelle. Favourite café of the writer George Simenon. Varied menu from salads to mussels and fish specialities.

Activities and excursions

When camping in Charente-Maritime, exciting activities and excursion destinations for young and old are just waiting to be discovered.

Highlights for little water rats

Giant slides and 29 ºC warm water - just the thing for the youngest campers. The well-signposted Centre Aquatique water park in Châtelaillon-Plage is located between La Rochelle and Rochefort. The endless sandy beach between the villages of La Couarde-sur-Mer and Sainte-Marie-de-Ré on the Île de Ré is a holiday paradise for water sports enthusiasts and families with small children. There are kayaks, catamarans and surfboards for hire. If you fancy it, you can even take sailing lessons. Safe swimming is possible at both high and low tide.

Hiking in the natural parks of Charente-Maritime

Away from the hustle and bustle of the seaside resorts, those looking for peace and quiet will find four worthwhile excursion destinations in Charente-Maritime: the shady Forêt domaniale de la Coubre forest, the Réserve Naturelle du Marais d′Yves nature reserve, Réserve Naturelle de Moëze-Oléron and the reserve in the bay of Aiguillon.

Gastronomy

Every chef on the Atlantic coast knows the secret of seafood specialities in Charente-Maritime: absolute freshness. Freshly caught seafood has a completely different flavour than goods that have been transported at great expense. Oysters come from the bay of Marennes, just around the corner. Deep-fried mussels - a delicious lunchtime snack - are brought to the table straight from Aiguillon Bay.

If you don't like fish or seafood, try a tender entrecôte after a Pineau des Charentes as an aperitif. Or how about a lamb stew made from the flavourful lamb from the salt marshes? The main meal is followed by brebis, a sheep's cheese from the Pyrenees. And then a sweet dessert accompanied by a digestif from the region.

Best time to visit

The Gulf Stream runs off the coast of Charente-Maritime, giving the sea pleasant water temperatures. The region's temperate climate is strongly influenced by the warm ocean currents. The best time for a beach holiday in Charente-Maritime is between June and September.

Those who don't get goose bumps even at water temperatures below 20 ºC can swim in the Atlantic as early as May. From mid-July to the end of August, the French themselves are also on the move: the majority of businesses close for their annual holiday. At the campsites in Charente-Maritime, nothing works without a reservation.
