Camping in Kleinwalsertal - that means a holiday in the mountains. The high mountain valley in the Austrian state of Vorarlberg is a true leisure paradise at any time of year. Here, on the northern edge of the Alps, you can indulge your passion for hiking or mountain biking on seemingly endless trails and experience great skiing fun in winter. The Walser culture and cuisine are also sure to delight.
A camping holiday in Kleinwalsertal offers outdoor fun for the whole family. Three of the four campsites in Kleinwalsertal are located in Riezlern, the main village at the beginning of the valley with its many shops, cafés and restaurants. The campsites in Riezlern are also suitable for winter camping. One is located 200 m above the centre and offers skiers direct access to the Kanzelwand valley run. Peace, contemporary comfort and enjoyment of nature can also be found at the campsites on the outskirts of the village. Between the communities of Mittelberg and Baad, there is another campsite that is open from spring to autumn and delights with views of the Bärenkopf, the rushing Breitach and lush green forests and meadows.
Alpencamping Haller, Camping Zwerwald, Camping Vorderboden and Jochum are particularly popular with their beautiful pitches for motorhomes and tents with views of the mountains. When booking, campers receive a guest card that entitles them to free use of the Walserbus.
A total of four campsites are available to travellers in the valley. What they all have in common is the fantastic view of the mountains and the uniquely beautiful location in Kleinwalsertal.
The family-friendly atmosphere is particularly appreciated by campers. The pitches on a level meadow in the shade of deciduous and coniferous trees promise plenty of shade, especially in summer. A children's playground, modern sanitary facilities with baby changing room and comprehensive service are a matter of course at Camping Vorderboden.
The Zwerwald campsite deliberately wants to give its guests a break and does not provide WLAN. Those who can do without it will find beautiful pitches with mountain views that offer every comfort. Campers can pitch their tents on a separate tent pitch. Thanks to its proximity to the villages of Riezlern and Hirschegg, the shops are only a few minutes away from Camping Zwerwald.
Alpencamping Haller is located directly in the village of Riezlern. Open all year round, winter camping is no problem at all on this site. Alpencamping Haller impresses above all with its good transport links and optimal use of the infrastructure.
Camping Jochum right at the entrance to the village is a tranquil site right at the entrance to the valley once travellers have negotiated the bends from Oberstdorf. This is the perfect place to start your adventure holiday in the high mountain valley.
The locals like to call Kleinwalsertal the most beautiful cul-de-sac in the world. There is only one road with numerous bends leading into it, and that is from Oberstdorf in Bavaria. It leads over the Walserschanz, which served as a defence line against Swedish and French armies in the 17th century, later became a customs station and still marks the border between Germany and Kleinwalsertal today.
At the Allgäu motorway junction, you change to a section of the A980 motorway, drive to the Waltenhofen junction and from there on the four-lane B19 federal road via the climatic health resort of Sonthofen in Oberallgäu and Oberstdorf to one of the campsites in Kleinwalsertal.
Framed by 36 peaks, Kleinwalsertal is 15 kilometres long and 6.5 kilometres wide. It is home to the four communities of Riezlern, Hirschegg, Mittelberg and Baad, which are located at altitudes between 1,089 and 1,244 metres.
The Walserstrasse in Riezlern is home to one of the highest casinos in the entire Alpine region and invites you to try your luck at poker, blackjack and roulette. The Crystal Ground Snowpark for snowboarders and freeriders promises fun of a completely different kind, with constantly changing obstacles. In summer, an open-air swimming pool provides refreshment, while the Riezlerns spa park has a natural Kneipp area.
The oldest church tower in Kleinwalsertal belongs to the parish church of St Jodok. Built in the 14th century, it stands majestically on the highest point of Mittelberg and attracts lovers of art-historical treasures with late Gothic frescoes and a chalice-like baptismal font from 1495. Beautiful Walser houses, built almost exclusively from wood, will leave you in awe. Not far from the village centre, the Walmendingerhorn cable car takes you up the panoramic mountain of the same name with a family-friendly hiking area.
Even though Kleinwalsertal may seem cut off from the rest of Austria, it is not a niche destination.
Building a snowman, tobogganing or a long hike through a snow-covered landscape: in Kleinwalsertal, this is simply part of a winter holiday. You can also pirouette on the ice rink in Riezlern or go sledging with huskies. The Kleinwalsertal-Oberstdorf ski area has 130 kilometres of pistes and a 50 km network of cross-country ski trails.
Five mountain railways and lifts make it possible to reach lofty heights in Kleinwalsertal. Hiking is of course also an option with a 185 km network of trails. If you feel sure-footed, take a tour up the Großer Widderstein, the highest peak in Kleinwalsertal at 2,536 metres. The Walser culture trails are also attractive, themed routes with information boards, where you can learn about the history of the valley.
Kleinwalsertal offers a variety of sporting and cultural events throughout the year. In addition to the biennial Alphorn Festival in Baad and the Walser Advent Magic, the following top events are also worth a visit:
Kleinwalsertal is one of Austria's gourmet regions. Regionality and seasonality play an important role in the restaurants, alpine dairies and rustic huts. The main products are beef and game, but alpine butter, Walser mountain blossom honey and mountain hay yeast are also among the local delicacies. They can be found in the various farm shops in Kleinwalsertal. The full range of regional specialities can be discovered at the Walser weekly market, which takes place every Friday from May onwards in the tranquil village square of Hirschegg. If you fancy a hearty snack at the campsite, you can buy savoury mountain cheese and typical regional venison and chamois sausage. Fresh milk and crispy baked loaves of bread are of course also available there.
The time of year doesn't matter when travelling to Kleinwalsertal. The Alpine jewel, as the author E.A. Pfeifer once called the high mountain valley, always shines. The weather is characterised by an alternating wet and cold climate. Spring awakens in May, when the mountain meadows are in colourful bloom. Average maximum temperatures of 22 degrees Celsius are reached between June and August. After an autumnal riot of colour, Kleinwalsertal turns into a real snow paradise in winter. "Hüüffawiisch Schnee" is the Walser dialect expression when the snowfall never ends and the picturesque landscape is covered in white magic. The crystal-clear air makes outdoor activities all the more appealing. The ski season in Kleinwalsertal starts in December and ends in April.
