Alkmaar is one of the oldest cities in Noord Holland, which is visible by the beautiful old architecture found in the center of the city. One thing that The Netherlands is famous for is their cheese and this especially true for Alkmaar. From roughly April-September every Friday from 10AM-1PM you can visit the sole remaining still-in-use Dutch cheese market at the Waagplein. Here you can also find the historical cheese museum (Hollands Kaasmuseum). When facing the town hall, turn left and cross the water to go to the old city center where nowadays you can find many boutiques and shops. For those of you with a sweet tooth: you can find an old Dutch candy store in this district which it’s both a shop that sells traditional candy, serves as a café and a museum in one. Alkmaar is an ideal starting point for your trip because it’s in the center of the province of Noord Holland and is very well connected by roads and by public transport. From here you can visit other towns in the area like Volendam, Zaanse Schans, or one of the famous beach areas like Bergen aan Zee, Egmond aan Zee and Callantsoog.
Insider tips: Make sure to visit IJssalon Laan. This place sells traditionally made vanilla ice cream. If you’re not a fan of ice cream, you can try the cherry milkshake. If you happen to visit Alkmaar in the month of October, try visiting the city on the 8th. On this day Alkmaar celebrates the liberation from Spanish rule in 1573. During the Alkmaars Ontzet there are fairs, parades, markets, and various other activities scattered through the city.
