The beaches of La Grande Plage, Le Golf and La Parée du Jonc in Saint-Jean-de-Monts have all been awarded the Blue Flag label, which means they are clean and easily accessible for everyone. As most of the campsites in Saint-Jean-de-Monts are only 500 metres to 1.5 km from the coast, they are ideal for camping by the sea. In addition to the exceptionally wide sandy beaches, the region also boasts beautiful wooded areas and seemingly endless cultural landscapes.
The western French municipality of Saint-Jean-de-Monts is located in the department of Vendée on the Bay of Biscay. With more than 2,400 hours of sunshine per year and long-lasting warm weather, the holiday resort is an excellent holiday destination on the Côte de Lumière - the Coast of Light.
With its wide, golden sandy beach, the coastline hugs the Atlantic Ocean for a total of 200 kilometres and is characterised by lush pine forests and vast sand dunes. The surrounding countryside around Saint-Jean-de-Monts is characterised by picturesque cultural landscapes with individual, small farms and hamlets. Undisturbed and long walks in the fresh air are therefore also ideal for a camping holiday with a dog.
When travelling from Germany, the route through the Saarland is usually the shortest route. From Saarbrücken, it is just under 850 kilometres across France to the Atlantic coast. The first section along the A4 motorway takes travellers past pretty towns such as Forbach. After a good 60 kilometres, you reach the Metz bypass. A detour to the old town centre with its impressive buildings from the Gothic era is recommended for a little refreshment.
After bypassing Metz, the A4 continues through charming landscapes with lush fields and crosses the north-western tip of the Parc naturel régional de Lorraine shortly before the historically significant town of Verdun. The section after 190 km from Metz is also scenically beautiful: the A4 leads past the impressive Gothic city of Reims in the north and the Montagne de Reims nature park in the south. The metropolitan region of Paris is bypassed to the south, and a good 210 km later you reach Le Mans. Here, another stop is recommended before travelling the final section. The route finally takes travellers past Angers and the Loire city of Nantes before reaching their destination of Saint-Jean-de-Monts. It should be noted that the vast majority of France's motorways are toll roads. The cost depends on the type of vehicle and the length of the motorway section.
The scenic beauty and sophisticated flair of the coastal town offer a variety of ways to spend an unforgettable holiday.
A trip to the Atlantic Toboggan water park is the perfect choice for a day of fun with the kids. The facility in the south of the city has a wide variety of slides for different age groups and swimming pools such as the 1,500 m² wave pool.
Free parking in the 4-hectare car park is just as much a part of the service as various snack bars and the option to bring dogs on a lead.
Horseback rides lasting several hours can be booked at Nelly's Ranch. Participants ride through the picturesque countryside on well-trained horses. This is a great way to spend your leisure time, and not just for families with children.
Depending on their personal experience, participants at Nelly's Ranch can choose between routes of varying difficulty, which are always accompanied by an experienced guide. In addition to rides through the forest, the horses can also be ridden on the beach. The special thing about this is that you can also ride horses swimming in the water.
In Saint-Jean-de-Monts and the surrounding area, interesting events for all ages and interests take place all year round.
Due to its direct location on the Atlantic, Saint-Jean-de-Monts and the entire département of Vendée offer a variety of fish specialities and traditional shellfish dishes. For example, mussels from L'Aiguillon, oysters from the bay of Bourgneuf and sardines from St-Gilles-Croix-de-Vie play an important culinary role in the region. Crabs, langoustines and fresh crayfish are other delicious ingredients in the region.
In addition to seafood, dairy, meat and poultry products are also important fixtures on the dining table. Quail, duck and chicken from nearby Challans are traditional and important ingredients, as are hare's liver, lamb's lettuce and potatoes in a wide variety of flavours. The exceptionally sunny region also produces exquisite red wines such as Pinot Noir and Cabernet Sauvignon.
Plenty of sunshine all year round makes for a successful holiday in Saint-Jean-de-Monts at any time of year. With the exception of a few cold weeks in winter, the temperate Atlantic climate along the coast ensures a pleasant and mild climate. The warmest - and therefore best - months for beach holidays are June, July and August. During the summer months, the average temperature is around 23 degrees Celsius, and even at night the thermometer rarely drops below 15 degrees Celsius. The water temperatures are usually at their highest from the beginning to the middle of August. This is when temperatures average between 18 and 23 degrees Celsius, making a day by the sea a refreshing experience.
