The Halkidiki peninsula with its three striking, finger-shaped headlands stretches out just behind Thessaloniki - one of the most beautiful destinations in the Greek region of Macedonia. The picturesque forest landscapes, which invite you to go on excursions and hikes, are fascinating. Holidaymakers can relax on the endless beaches and in secluded bays and cool off in the sparkling Aegean Sea.
What makes the Halkidiki peninsula so unique for camping is the mixture of beach resorts, idyllic forests and an ever-present hint of culture. Two of the three finger-shaped headlands are accessible by motorhome. Here holidaymakers will find various pitches and campsites in the immediate vicinity of the water.
With the Mediterranean right on your doorstep, you can jump into the refreshing water in the morning and enjoy various sports such as surfing, kitesurfing or sailing. Banana boat rides and water skiing are popular with families.
The third headland is reserved for the Orthodox monks of Mount Athos. Only men have access to the small monastery republic, but holidaymakers can marvel at the scenery together from the excursion boat. Culture lovers can also find out more about the history and culture of Ouranoupoli and Nea Roda.
The journey to Chalkidiki takes you across the Balkans. If you are travelling from southern or western Germany, you will usually travel via Munich and then drive to Hungary or Slovenia.
The decision as to which route to take depends on personal interests. On the Western Balkans, for example, the Adriatic baths in Croatia and the medieval fortress city of Dubrovnik are worth visiting. You can also discover the secluded bays of Kotor in Montenegro and the nature parks of Albania during a stopover.
The best place to leave Albania is in the south-east near Korca and continue on the A4 motorway towards Thessaloniki. It is then only 50 kilometres to Chalkidiki. In Albania, around 340 km separate travellers from their final destination.
An alternative route leads via Vienna and Bratislava along the Danube to Budapest in Hungary. Travellers can also follow the river to Belgrade and then head for the Bulgarian capital Sofia. This is around 350 kilometres from Halkidiki.
It is around 1,700 kilometres from Munich, 1,900 kilometres from Berlin and 2,200 kilometres from Hamburg to Chalkidiki.
Two headlands of the Halkidiki peninsula can be travelled to by motorhome. Fantastic coniferous and mixed forests and hidden bathing bays await holidaymakers here.
The most popular peninsula for a camping holiday in Halkidiki is Kassandra in the west. Here, the landscape is characterised by shallow hills and dense pine forests that are perfect for long hikes. You can climb up to an altitude of 400 metres and enjoy magnificent views. There are several sandy beaches on the coast for a beach holiday.
The central headland of Chaldiki is known as Sithonia and is crossed by a low mountain range up to 817 metres high. The Itamos range is one of the most beautiful excursion areas and has a large population of conifers. The coastline is mostly steep. Secluded bathing bays are welcome retreats for holidaymakers who like to explore the landscape on their own in a motorhome.
North of the peninsulas, hikers get their money's worth with mountains over 1,000 metres. The slopes are mainly covered with mixed forests, which also run through the fertile river valleys. One of the most famous attractions is the summit of Cholomondas. To the south-east, the central region borders the monastic republic of Athos. At the border, visitors can purchase handicrafts made by the monks.
Those travelling to Halkidiki in summer will usually relax on the beaches of Kassandra, go swimming or sailing. In the countryside, the forests and mountains are ideal for hiking.
The Kassandra peninsula in particular is perfect for relaxing on the beaches of Macedonia. White sand and a good infrastructure for active holidaymakers with restaurants, campsites and water sports schools are ideal for a varied stay. Diving tours, kite trips and family-orientated activities such as banana boating are offered in many places.
Greece is a paradise for sailors. From Kassandra and the harbour towns of Chalkidiki, you can set off on an exciting trip and get to know the hilly headlands from a completely different perspective. There is also the opportunity to moor at otherwise inaccessible bays.
The hilly and wooded landscapes with peaks ranging from 400 to 1,100 metres promise a variety of hiking tours through the nature of Macedonia. From the hills, hikers have a unique view of the coast and the Mediterranean. Fragrant pines and pine trees form the backdrop for an unforgettable hike.
The cuisine in Halkidiki is typical of Greece and emphasises meat and fresh vegetables. The famous gyros is served with tzatziki in the local restaurants. It is also served with a flavoursome farmer's salad with feta cheese, tomatoes, olives and olive oil.
Other classics are souvlaki skewers and moussaka, a casserole made from aubergines, minced meat and cheese. Chalkidiki's location on the Mediterranean naturally ensures a varied fish cuisine. On the coast, chefs prepare grilled fish, octopus and shrimps.
A glass of Imyglikos wine, an ice-cold ouzo or a fiery metaxa are the perfect accompaniment. The crispy fried anchovies Marídes are a delicious snack to accompany the beer.
For a beach holiday, travel to the campsites in Halkidiki in the summer months. Temperatures rise to 29 degrees Celsius as early as June. In July and August, temperatures often reach over 30 degrees Celsius. Even in September, very warm days can still be expected. The water is between 22 and 25 degrees Celsius during this period.
If you fancy it, you can also take advantage of the low season in October with milder temperatures and a Mediterranean that is still warm at around 20 degrees Celsius. Hikers prefer the spring and autumn days, when temperatures reach a maximum of 20 to 25 degrees Celsius. You can also go on exciting excursions in February and March with the right clothing.
