The Peloponnese is ideal for both relaxed and adventurous camping holidays. Along the coast of Greece's southernmost peninsula you will find top locations that are ideal for camping with the kids. Nature camping in the deserted regions is more popular. The east coast and the middle finger of the peninsula enchant with hidden campsites.

Special features of camping in the Peloponnese

Most campers visiting Greece's largest peninsula are travelling with time on their hands. The well-kept campsites on the coast not only offer fantastic views of the Aegean, but usually also pools and leisure facilities. Families feel particularly at home here on summer holidays lasting several weeks.

The Peloponnese attracts couples with a spirit of discovery all year round who are travelling through Europe in a motorhome or escaping the winter. In addition to the camping paradises on the coast, these motorhome travellers like to explore the more secluded places on the peninsula - such as the inland, remote bays and steep cliffs or the ancient sites.

How to get there

The quickest and easiest way for holidaymakers to reach the Peloponnese peninsula is by plane. There are direct flights from most major cities in Germany. From Munich, for example, these connections take three hours and 40 minutes. On arrival, campers can get into their motorhome, which they have previously booked online. Holidaymakers can travel much longer in their own vehicle. For campers with time and individual travellers, the holiday starts with the journey. On the 2,178 km journey from Munich to the Peloponnese, they cross at least five countries before reaching the north of Greece. The fastest route takes around 22 hours and is via the E70 motorway.

Travelling via Italy is more relaxed. In this case, campers take the large car ferries from the harbours of Venice, Trieste or Ancona. These journeys on the glittering Mediterranean take between 21 and 35 hours. If you want to spend less time on the boat, you can travel to southern Italy and take the ferries from Bari or Brindisi. Due to the additional fuel consumption, these connections are only marginally cheaper.

Holiday destinations in the Peloponnese

The Peloponnese has a wide variety of holiday regions. Each region radiates its own charm. From the fertile plains of Achaia to the unique beaches of Elis and the ancient sites and sights of Laconia.

Diverse Achaia

Achaia, which is dominated by agriculture, is becoming increasingly popular with holidaymakers. Many families with children spend their holidays at the campsites in the north of the Peloponnese. In addition to the beaches on the coast, the harbour city of Patras is also impressive. Corinth, the Oracle of Delphi and ancient Olympia are just a few hours away.

Laconia: ancient sites and nature experiences

Old and new Laconia meet in the city of Sparta, which was built on the ruins of its ancient predecessor. The region in the south-east impresses with the Taygetos Mountains. The serpentines and paths attract hikers and mountain bikers.

In addition to mountain fortresses and stalactite caves, the dream beaches attract beach holidaymakers to the region. The island of Elafonisos lies off the coast of Laconia. Campers can cross over by ferry and spend relaxing holidays on the Caribbean-style Simos beach.

Top 5 sights

  • Mycenae: The archaeological site shows the city wall, palace, burial circle, royal tombs, cistern, treasure chambers and Lion Gate of the ancient city.
  • Palamidi: The Venetian fortress is located in Nafplio on the 216 metre high mountain of the same name. Holidaymakers can enjoy breathtaking views from the impressive castle walls.
  • Theatre of Epidaurus: The ancient theatre is one of the largest in Greece and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
  • Voidokilia Beach: The white sandy beach forms the letter Omega and encloses a shallow lagoon with light blue water in a semicircle.
  • Taygetos: The mountain range lies between Laconia and Messinia. The 2,404 metre high Profitis Ilias is the highest mountain on the peninsula.

Top 2 insider tips

  • Hammam in Patras: This Turkish bathhouse built by the Venetians in Greece, which is still in operation today, is unique in the world. You'll need slippers and a giant towel to visit the 500-year-old Ottoman hot bath.
  • Bar Inteal in Patras: This bar in the renovated cinema has a nostalgic feel. In addition to an exquisite film programme, excellent dishes, wines and cocktails are served in a classy ambience.

Activities and excursions

In addition to the ancient sites, the beaches are among the Peloponnese's greatest treasures. Many are so idyllic that they are perfect for swimming, relaxing and walking, while others are perfect for diving, snorkelling and water sports.

On course for the sun - sailing, surfing and SUP

The Aegean is a paradise for sailing and surfing. But the new trend sport of stand-up paddling (SUP) is also attracting more and more water sports enthusiasts. The corresponding equipment can be hired at the campsites on the Peloponnese or in the nearest town.

Off into the mountains - hiking

Almost all excursions in the Peloponnese lead past breathtaking landscapes and ancient archaeological sites. There are challenging and easy tours. The route to Cape Tenaro, for example, is ideal for families and senior citizens. The path leads past ancient mosaics. At the end, there is a lovely picnic spot below the lighthouse.

Dive in - discover the underwater world

The crystal-clear waters of the Aegean Sea are perfect for diving and snorkelling. The lagoons are ideal for beginners. Diving pros can test their skills along the underwater cliffs. Midnight dives and wreck diving are becoming increasingly popular.

Events

Many customs and traditions follow the church calendar. Whether with God's blessing or without, it is important to the Hellenes that people eat well, drink plenty and dance a lot.

February - March

  • Carnival: In Patras, carnival Sunday is celebrated with parades. Thousands of participants parade through the streets dressed up on 50 floats. The big highlight is the fireworks display that lights up the harbour in the evening and includes the burning of the Carnival King, a giant straw puppet.

March - April

  • Easter: The Christian Orthodox Greeks sometimes celebrate five weeks later. The festival is one of the most important of all and is celebrated with church services, fireworks, processions of lights and midnight feasts.

June

  • Folk festival in Stemnítsa: Greece's rural traditions await guests in the small mountain village of Stemnítsa. On the first Sunday in June, traditional songs and dances are performed on the market square amidst the picturesque stone houses.

August

  • Assumption of the Virgin Mary: Church festivals with music and dancing take place in many villages on 15 August. The icon of the Virgin Mary is carried through the town in a solemn procession.

September

  • Wine festival in Neméa: The peninsula's most important wine-growing region celebrates its famous product on the first weekend in September. This is when the winegrowers open their doors and let visitors explore the vineyards.

Gastronomy

Olives, wine and large appetiser platters - Greek cuisine is ideal for light camping fare. Most dishes are based on local olive oil and seasonal produce. Here the tomatoes still taste sunny, the melons fruity and the cucumbers crunchy, quite unlike the supermarket produce from home.

In addition to local fruit and vegetables, the Peloponnese serves up plenty of fresh fish, the best seafood such as calamari and healthy meat, preferably grilled. The fish or meat is served with plenty of tzatziki in bread pockets.

Stuffed vine leaves, puff pastry pockets and dips with flatbread make an excellent snack when camping in the Peloponnese.

Weather

Camping in the Peloponnese guarantees sunshine. In summer, the sea glistens under the bright sun almost every day. Depending on the season, the climate ranges from hot to mild. However, the temperature differences on the peninsula between north and south and in the mountains can be considerable. A mild wind brings a slight cooling effect at midday.

There are only three seasons on the Peloponnese: spring, summer and the rainy season. The latter lasts from November to May. Heavy rainfall can sometimes occur during this time. In September and October, bathing conditions are still ideal. The water temperatures are a pleasant 20 degrees Celsius.
